Enough with the APPS!

I’d embrace it more readily if I could use it with my iPad. The print is often too small for me to read on my phone, and if I go off to enlarge it I lose my place and when I get back I can’t see a whole sentence at a time….
App dependency also increases phone dependency which brings its own problems if phone is lost or runs out of charge
away from home.

I get where you are coming from but really we should embrace this new technology - it is inevitable.

I do - I embrace new technology as much as I can - but there are some areas in which I just prefer to go 'old school'.

I will flog my regular dead horse. There are some of us, by no means all elderly, who for practical reasons find it difficult to use smart phones.

What are we meant to do when we find downloading, let alone using apps really difficult?

I've been embracing technology for years now and love most of it,but I do get fed up with so many apps that Ive become rebellious now and refuse to load them unless there's a very good reason..

I agree Elegran. It's the bus apps which frustrate me most. I was so busy looking up the time, the bus flew straight past without stopping.

Now that the electronic boards are just timetables, it's only half useful.

I use Google maps for car journeys and walking too through unknown bits of the city.
I now always put a postcode rather than a street name as I once found myself halfway to Glasgow where there's a street with the same name as my DS in Edinburgh.

I run my own life and am not going to be told by apps or anything else how and what to do. I use my card to pay for things when it suits me , but refuse to buy from shops that do not take cash too. I object to it on two levels. There are those without cards or phones. Why should they be denied the same as everyone else? It is giving other people a certain power over you. Well I object to that. I am the customer with the money and wont be dictated to. Whilst they may say they prefer cards that is a different thing. I put my money where my mouth is too. Some time ago a small department store was sold and the new owners decided that the childrens department which had been on the ground floor would now go to the first floor as , and I quote "men havent time to go upstairs" this store had no lift. I spoke to them and not getting a satisfactory answer organised a protest. As I said to them all these children have fathers . We picketed the place, and organised a good week of protest after which they returned it to the way it was. I totally accept that some companies wont care a bit that I patronize them or not, but I am pleased to support our local market - who love cash - and remind the people that using cards costs them and us money too

I also carry cash and use it when I can Madeleine. The community shop where I volunteer pays a small fortune for the privilege of taking card payments.
It may be handy but it comes with hidden cost. Cash keeps the local economy healthy.

Some apps do make our lives easier. I order my hospital medication on app, because phoning leaves me holding on a phone for ages, having to choose certain options, before I can even get to speak to a human.

Would it help if you had a small kindle to carry around. You can transfer apps from your phone to a kindle. That way you would have a larger screen to view.

I hate being dictated to by technology.
DS and GD and I went out one day and we tried to park the car but it only could be done with an app, only GD's iPhone was compatible.
The NHS app is giving me endless grief and raising my blood pressure that I can't get the tablets for.
I wish I could turn the clock back.

Harrigan, I am glad, that I did not accept the option to use the app.
I just choose next time , when asked to use it.
I prefer to order repeats ( all nineteen of them) on my PC, I couldn't manage it on a phone.

The hospital prescriptions are not available on repeat, the hospital writes the prescription and it is much easier to use an app.

My daughter is a tester that means she test the sites that developers build.
In some cases the she will tell client that the App is not ready to launch, there are still problems.
But no, the client will say we are not delaying the launch any longer

I'm happy to embrace technology when it benefits me.

I don't think there has been a time when organising a social meeting, or an appointment of some kind, or a follow up meeting on one of the video conferencing platforms when anyone has been quicker than me in saying yes or no. That's because I glance up and look at my wall calendar while everyone else is furiously stabbing away at their phones to access their calendar.

It's a bit like going to find your calculator when you want to add up 2 + 2.

I have my meds app on my tablet, it allows face recognition and allows for my clumsy fingers!

I hate them but the art of the app is only having those you really need. They are very few.

I fully agree with you 100%! It's apps for this, apps for that!

When someone or other says ''load this app'' and I say ''no, I don't want any apps on my mobile that's not already pre-programmed or those I chose to have, but I don't want any more that what I really have to'' they look at me as if I'm something from a freak show! ''But you HAVE to load the app or you can't go any further'' ... and I reply ''no problem, I'll choose to not continue!''

I do paid online surveys on my laptop and a few tell me to load an app on my laptop to continue with the survey so I just knock it off and delete it!

I've had a few deliveries recently and repeatedly filled out reviews .

The dreaded words "have you got the app".

We regularly stay near Bridport in Dorset and use the car park there. Over the years it has always had a cash payment system, but recently it changed to having to use an app. We visited during the first week and nobody could use it, though many were used to paying by card.
We were delighted to find recently that we no longer have to have an app but can pay by cash or card, apparently the local council were responsive to the very many complaints from their voters.
Such a shame that the Mayor of London is not responsive either to his council members or his constituents. Parking (and driving) in London is a nightmare, presumably because he wants everybody, including the infirm, to have to use public transport even if they have to climb stairs, change trains and buses and work out unfamiliar routes.

If you give them a good review you often get another request for one on a different platform.
