Coffee Cup Size

Over the last month I have visited 4 different independent cafes in various towns in England. I chose to go to independent cafes rather than the national big name ones. I always drink an Americano (black coffee with cold milk). The size of the cup or mug was so small. Literally 4 gulps and it was empty. The smallest mug measured 2.5cm across at the base. Another cafe used small tea cups suitable for a small child. What an absolute rip off! They've taken shrinkflation too far. From now on if I go into an independent cafe I will ask to see the size of the mug before ordering. Alternatively I will go to a big chain coffee shop, at least I can get a decent quantity to drink.

I prefer an independant coffeeshop at any time, and Costa or Nero to Starbucks but in a real coffee-crisis-moment I will give in. About the size of the cups : I prefer my coffee ristretto, strong and hot, in tiny cups. If and when I feel like sipping for a while I order an latte, and yes I like a big cup or a tall glass for it.

If drinking coffee in Spain or other European countries you tend to get a smaller cup, like a teacup. And you have to stipulate if you want milk or it comes black.
In Italy is all expresso shots knocked back within seconds.
Was surprised that in parts of the US, though people are coffee drinkers, the coffee was so weak and flavourless, was better in NYC and Seattle.

Sounds like you're getting an 'expresso' size cup....

Mojack26 Tue 03-Dec-24 16:25:49

Yes I thought Americano was black no milk too. Maybe she's getting an expresso?? Tiny cup...

My youngest son thought it was called Cafe Nerd rather than Nero we still call it Nerds

Seakay, I am confused. So a full cup is 60ml, and a half cup 80ml !?!

missdeke Tue 03-Dec-24 14:03:01

I no longer drink coffee so don't need to know what all the different names are. I remember when coffee was instant or filter and black or white, so much easier.

A traditional UK teacup size is 170ml (a breakfast cup is larger)
A traditional UK coffee cup size is 60ml (a demi-tasse is 80ml)

(information gleaned from sites selling Royal Albert china)

An interesting blog article about American coffee cup sizes in commercial premises here:

Funny isn't it how tastes differ. I love coffee and deeply regret the demise of filter coffee in most coffee shops. In my opinion coffee made with a machine is never very good. Having said that I find Starbucks and Nero quite acceptable and can't abide Costa. Strange lot aren't we?

I would rather have Costa or Nero too Fleurpepper if there's no decent independent!

And I can take the dog in at Nero's.

We have coffee cups in our Wedgewood Dinner Service, my sons always refers to them as Economy Size.

Flat white for me, now the most expensive, cappuccino and latte not enough coffee in the drink weak.

Starbucks seem to have a monopoly on the American coffee market. Although Pret had arrived over there last time we went.

Fleurpepper Mon 02-Dec-24 21:44:19

I remember my first visit to a Starbucks in downtown Manhattan- way before we had any in the UK. Coffee was horrible, watery and bitter then, and still is.

Costa and Nero are much better- but I prefer to go to great independent cafés. They deserve our support. But choose carefully the ones with great coffee.

NotSpaghetti Mon 02-Dec-24 21:39:47

I'm another who would rather not have a coffee in a Starbucks.
Horrible

I occasionally take my granddaughter to Starbucks for a Frapaccino, her choice. I don't like their coffee, so I don't order anything.

I like this, I heard or read it a while back. A coffee shop in Rome having a Starbucks opening nearby, the proprietor was asked "are you worried for your business" to which he replied "not really we serve coffee, they serve hot drinks"

Fleurpepper Mon 02-Dec-24 21:21:32

...and taste like dishwater (and bitter- like Starbucks YUK)

TerriBull Mon 02-Dec-24 21:11:38

Quality not quantity, I like a fairly small cup some takeaway coffees are so large they look like a small bucket

Trying Portuguese coffee adds a whole new dimension.

I don't order coffees very often from cafes, but I just read up that an Americano should be one shot of espresso to 4 oz water, so then the finished drink is 5-6 oz total. That's not very large.

But then I looked up Americanos in local coffee shops on line and they had 8 or 12 oz options. So I'm not sure if they have 2 and 3 shots of espresso?

Can you ask for a drip or press coffee?

ExDancer Mon 02-Dec-24 15:55:04

By the was it's an eSpresso not eXpresso.

When I was training for my job in a cafe many years ago, we were taught that these names came from the Americans in Italy after WW2
When the soldiers asked for a coffee they were shocked to get a very strong black coffee in a very tiny cup.
They wanted a weaker coffee with the choice of hot or cold milk and the Italians called it an Americano.
The other coffee on offer was a frothy coffee made from milk and water, a Cappuccino, which was only drunk in the mornings.
Other changes followed with a milky coffee ( Latte), and Mocha (with chocolate and coffee), and now with 'extra shots' and other complications.

Americano no milk for me too - always happy with Nero's or Esquires and some independents. Never Starbucks.

Starbucks is vile.

I am always amazed when I ask for Americano, to be asked 'with milk'? Well no, NO.

We used to have our own refillable cups when we used to go to Costa and they would add the normal amount of coffee but top it up with hot water resulting in a tasteless drink. We go to another coffee shop now and have their cups, not so environmentally friendly but it tastes much nicer.
