AIBU that as a new grandparents, who is refered to as Nanny by my kids and myself, my mother also wants to be called Nanny?

Back story she has 6 grand children already and 2 great grandchildren, from my children, her grandchildren
On a side note she also refers to my step dad of 53 years as 'Dad', not your dad so it sounds like we're sisters and he's our dad.

Well my preference kind of speaks for itself. My own Mum loathed Nanna or any variations “I’m not a goat!”etc.

If you’re in regular contact with all sets of grandparent- grand or great, there needs to be some differentiation though.
People living longer makes this a newish dilemma.

Gran, elder granddaughter it’s Granny, younger granddaughter
it’s Bro, has been since we played Super Mario together, 20
years ago.

We have four generations in our family.
The oldest were both "grandma" so I didn't want to repeat that.
One of my own grandmothers had been "granny" so I decided to revive that name 🤗

Aldom

I don't understand your post Astitchintime, who are you suggesting should be grateful?

The OP, I think, Aldom

I suppose not everyone has four generations in their families, all in touch and making an issue of who should be called by what name.

Nana, I refuse to answer to granny 🤦‍♀️ 😂
They actually think it’s quite funny And if they want to wind me up…..😁

My grandmother refused to be called 'Nanny' on the grounds that she was not a goat.

Witzend Sun 08-Dec-24 09:15:41

TBH I never really liked ‘Nanny’, but that was what both elder Gdcs called me before they sussed out how to say ‘Granny’.
From them, it was music to my ears, though. 😍

Does it really matter? Why not be grateful that you have your own mother in your life and also your own AC and GC - four generations!!

KaazaK Sun 08-Dec-24 08:27:51

I’m Nanny to my 4 grandchildren. My mum was Nana to my children when they grew older. However as young children they referred to my parents as Nana and Grandad Peep (my dad’s name was Pete) and my in laws as Nanny and Grandad Pop (we used to call my father in law Pop)!! So when I see posts on here regarding what to call grandparents I just think the children will work it out for themselves!

Miss Adventure
Thank you so much for your humourous comments "you employed a goat" etc. I think a few others on here are just plain rude and have a superiority complex when making the " nanny is a goat or someone that was paid help etc! comments and they do it knowing full well that certain GNs are called Nanny by their beloved GCs.

MissAdventure Thu 05-Dec-24 20:33:14

We called my nan, well, nan, obviously, but also nana, nanny, whatever we felt like at the time.

JudyBloom Thu 05-Dec-24 20:11:00

I had 'Nannan's when little, then they became Gran, my Mum was Granny to my children and I am Nanna to my grandchildren. There are so many names with different nationalities, whatever people are comfortable with and whatever the children wish.

Well, Yog I'm writing Christmas cards as I wait for the electrician to arrive. Just took a short break, so looked at GN as a notification appeared on my phone. grin I'm actually feeling rather chuffed to have almost finished my card writing. The ones for posting are now sitting in the hall. smile

I think we must all be bored - 6 pages on this topic! Although I admit to reading some and love the children's own interpretations!

I like hearing the children's versions.

Here's some more children's versions for you.. smile
Oooee, because the grandmother used to call Cooee through the letterbox and the other grandmother, same family, was Deedee, because her first name was Edith. grin

Omaju Thu 05-Dec-24 12:03:42

I'm Oma and my husband is Opa, the other side are Nanny and Pops because when our first grandchild (the first for both sides) was born there were still numerous grandmas and nannas/nanny and a grand-dad around due to our parents still being alive. I, also, never saw myself as a grandma, granny or nanna/nanny. Our Dutch friends were Oma and Opi and German friends were Oma and Opa... so we nicked those and became Oma and Opa.

I'm called Gummy (!) and it's fine.

JENMA Thu 05-Dec-24 09:21:25

My grandchildren call me Jenma as my name is Jenny and they call my husband step-step as he is not their biological grandfather. They range from 11 - 22 and all of the 6 call me that. I really like it.

Tradition can vary from one family to another.
