AIBU that as a new grandparents, who is refered to as Nanny by my kids and myself, my mother also wants to be called Nanny?

Back story she has 6 grand children already and 2 great grandchildren, from my children, her grandchildren
On a side note she also refers to my step dad of 53 years as 'Dad', not your dad so it sounds like we're sisters and he's our dad.

Thank you MissA 😊

Kimski44- or 'grandmama' like Queen Victorias children probably did😂

Tradition usually is nanna or nanny is the paternal grandparent (the baby's dads mum) and grandma or granny is the maternal grandparent (the baby's mum mum) i am nanna to my sons kids- grandma to my daughters kids- but it confuses them when the 'other' gran also insists on being called grandma- but at end of day- its up to you what you call them i guess.

The little boy who lived in the house behind my mum's was a constant visitor to play with my daughter.

He insisted my mum's title was Noonie. smile

My formidable grandmother was just known as Mother by all her children and grandchildren. It’s as well her daughter and daughter in law were happy to be Mams, or it could all have got very confusing.

Grandma ruled ok in our family as all the grandmothers wanted to be called Grandma. There were ways to ward off any confusion we referred to each one by the initials of their surnames - eg Grandma A and Grandma B. My own children referred to their Grandmas by where they lived so one was Grandma in A and the other was Grandma from B. My grandmother lived until the age of ninety and my children knew her well. She was always known as Great-Grandma. I am not a grandmother yet, but I, too, will want to be Grandma when the time comes. I don't like Nanny or Nanna - fine when children are small, but sounds childish when they grow up. Granny conjures up the picture of a white haired old lady sitting in a rocking chair in the corner.

You may not get your choice! My late mother wanted to be called ‘Granny’ and yet loved that each of every one of her grandchildren called her ‘Gan Gan’ till the day she died. My sister-in-law also chose ‘Granny’ but is called ‘Ga Ga’ which looks equally likely to stick. I am ‘Mamma’ or ‘Grandma Sarah’ neither which I chose, but hearing their sweet little voices squeaky ‘Mamma’ with delight - there is no better sound…

MissAdventure

Luckily enough, some children are intelligent enough to know the difference between their family member, an animal, or that quaintly old fashioned phrase, "a paid help" wink

Though it seems some grown up Gransnetters can’t. grin

Our children asked us what we wanted to be called and we opted for Grandma and Grandpa other parents are Granddad and Granny.

I’m absolutely happy with being called Nanny it’s an honour. Never thought I’d be a Grandmother so it doesn’t matter in the great scheme of things what my Grandson calls me as long as it’s not rude. Just think how privileged to have them.

Kimski44 Wed 04-Dec-24 19:20:51

I am Nonna to mine (although I’m not Italian!) which I like and my husband is Grumpy. I think, re the previous references to the term “nanny” being more the title of a paid child rearing carer, these days it doesn’t really matter - if you like it, it’s quite sweet but I don’t believe “posh” people would use it still for a grandmother haha - they would still use “granny”.

OmaJoy Wed 04-Dec-24 19:08:16

I’m Oma which was what my children called my mum who was Dutch. Works for us

Pippa22 Wed 04-Dec-24 19:07:52

Grandma70’s I’m with you on this as I too am Grandma for the same reason and love it.
Nanny is what the boys other grandparent likes and I didn’t want to be so that’s fine by me- and her.

If the other children call her Nanny I guess she thought it just made life easier. Don’t let it spoil the joy of a new baby for everyone. In some cultures all older women are aunty and younger women sister. I think that’s nice

Nan is also a nickname for Ann or Anne.

sazz1 Wed 04-Dec-24 18:34:56

My MIL wanted to be called Nan as it was short for Nancy and people wouldn't know she was old enough to be a grandmother lol. The children called her nanny May. My mum was granny.
When talking to the children we referred to them as :-
Granny with a bad back or Granny with a bad leg. Sounds so silly now but seemed logical at the time.
I'm the only granny as none of the grandchildren have contact with their other grandmothers - sadly the grandmothers don't want to know.

Sarahr Wed 04-Dec-24 17:58:19

I had 2 Nan's and 2 Grandads. My children had one Nanny and a Gran. One was just as a Nanny should be, the other wasn't.

notgoneyet Wed 04-Dec-24 17:22:32

I have twin great grandchildren. One of the boys early on designated my daughter (his grandmother) Nanna toot toot cos she always came to them in the car and always tooted them on her way out, and me Nanna choo choo because I always came to see them on the train!
We've now been upgraded to Nanna car and Nanna train, now they're nearly six

Emeraldforest Wed 04-Dec-24 17:11:49

Once when I was working as a nannie the 2 year old called me Bubba, which I was told was a Yiddish term for grandmother! I was 22 so quite honoured!

Roddi3363 Wed 04-Dec-24 17:10:59

I’m an Oma.

Mistyfluff8 Wed 04-Dec-24 17:07:51

I amNee by one set of grandchildren

Emeraldforest Wed 04-Dec-24 17:07:13

I'm the only grandparent to all of my grandchildren sadly. I'm nanny. I never imagined myself as a grandparent and didn't like any of the titles, also I used to be a nannie as in nursery nurse.
However I finally got out of denial and I'm happy with nanny.

SaxonGrace Wed 04-Dec-24 17:03:23

I don’t like Nanny personally, all my grandchildren call me Nana which I much prefer, but it’s what suits that counts.

GrammarGrandma Wed 04-Dec-24 17:03:11

I didn't like Nanny, Granny or Grandma, so I am Nonna to my five grandchildren.

Deepf Wed 04-Dec-24 17:02:14

I'm Nana, I dislike Nanny I'm not a goat, Grandma makes me sound ancient and Granny well I like to live life not sit knitting in a shawl and rocking chair 😂😂
