AIBU that as a new grandparents, who is refered to as Nanny by my kids and myself, my mother also wants to be called Nanny?

Back story she has 6 grand children already and 2 great grandchildren, from my children, her grandchildren
On a side note she also refers to my step dad of 53 years as 'Dad', not your dad so it sounds like we're sisters and he's our dad.

Who cares what the person is called? I couldn't care less what my grandchildren call me as long as they call me something and we love each other and have fun together.

What do the existing grandchildren/ great grandchildren call each of you?

My eldest, also the 1st grandchildren, couldn't manage 'Nana' but called my mum 'Anna'. Further grandchildren followed suit.

Similarly, our eldest grandchildren couldn't deal with Grandma and Grandpa so we are Ma and Pa to all 9 of them. I love it.

MissAdventure

The children will probably call you bing bong and noo noo or something.
That'll put paid to all the silliness.

GanGan.

Witzend

Both I and the other GM are Granny, with first name if needed. Could you not be e.g Nanny Ann and Nanny Sue?
It’s worked fine for us.

Well, I've read it three times and I'm still confused, sorry.

Yes, Nanny Sharr and Nanny Sue (or whatever your mother's name is). Although perhaps you should pick an alternative.

Anyway, she did have first dibs, being Nanny already!
I think.

MissAdventure Tue 03-Dec-24 16:32:35

You employed a goat?! shock

JamesandJon33 Tue 03-Dec-24 16:32:16

I’m Grandma. Wouldn’t have like nanny as that’s a paid help. However in Wales it’s Nain, therefore Nan for short. I would have liked Nain

Jaxjacky Tue 03-Dec-24 16:31:23

I’m a Grandma, MrJ is Grandad, same as my parents were, except my Dad ended up Pampa, I used to employ a nanny.

Grannybags Tue 03-Dec-24 16:29:11

I’m Granny and my Mum was Granny 😊

agnurse Tue 03-Dec-24 16:29:02

Both sets of our grandparents were Grandma and Grandpa. When I was young, we knew Mum's parents as Grandma with the black hair and Grandpa with the white hair, and Dad's parents as Grandma with the white hair and Grandpa with the black hair. Eventually, Dad's parents took in a tiny calico kitten (probably only about a week old) that my cousin had found abandoned. (My cousin loves cats but couldn't have one where she was living, so she asked my grandparents to take the kitten.) They named the kitten Snoopy. My youngest brother then knew our grandparents as the Grandma (and Grandpa) with the Snoopy and the Grandma (and Grandpa) without the Snoopy grin

(As an aside, Snoopy was fantastic for my grandparents. She was spoiled rotten, lived to be 17 years old, and passed away peacefully in Grandma's arms. Dad, a licensed veterinarian, humanely euthanized her.)

I'm Gran. Nannies are people employed to look after children.

Redhead56 Tue 03-Dec-24 15:58:38

I'm Nanny L or if I tell them off naughty Nanny!

AGAA4 Tue 03-Dec-24 15:37:34

I seem to be Nana to everyone in the family now. My ACs call me Nana and so does my S i L. I quite like it. My mum was always Grandma.

Ziggy62 Tue 03-Dec-24 15:19:02

I was grandma until my 2nd GC started to talk and started to call me by a shortened version of my first name. Now all 3 of my GC do

MissAdventure Tue 03-Dec-24 15:12:41

Lady Gaga sounds wonderful. smile

tanith Tue 03-Dec-24 15:11:30

It really matters not what they call you as long as they call. I’m called Nanny by most of my Grandchildren, my overseas Grandchildren call me Granny and my Gt Grandchildren call me Gaga. I’ve no preference.

MissAdventure Tue 03-Dec-24 15:08:22

Yep, we are all nanny in our family.
Nanny T, nanny B, whatever.

Theexwife Tue 03-Dec-24 15:07:20

When my grandson was born he had two grandmothers, two great grandmothers, one great great grandmother and a step grandmother, we all had/have different variations on what we were called, nobody minded the names we were given.

downtoearth Tue 03-Dec-24 15:04:16

I am nanny to my eldest grandaughter aged 25, I am nanny P to my youngest who is 6.

My Ex husbands partner is nanny S to both girls.

My mum was little nanny, she had shrunk by the time the eldest GD came along, never met the youngest.

MissAdventure Tue 03-Dec-24 14:58:35

Well, seeing as we had no nursemaids or livestock, it was quite normal for us.

Calendargirl Tue 03-Dec-24 14:57:05

I’m Granny.

If Granny was good enough for Queen Elizabeth, it’s good enough for me.

Grandma70s Tue 03-Dec-24 14:45:03

I’m Grandma, and the other one is Granny. She gave me first choice and I chose Grandma because I was close to my own grandma.

Nanny is a nursemaid (or a female goat!). I find its use for grandmother puzzling. It’s never been used by anybody in our family.

Fairislecable Tue 03-Dec-24 14:40:08

You could steer the children by suggestion:

Here is a picture of Grandnanny, look Grandnanny has bought you this or shall we visit Grandnanny later etc.

If your mother complains just smile and say never mind he/she is only little.
