No rule book I’m a Nannie my mum was a nana my husband is a grandad his dad is a grandpa

There isn’t a should, you’re right, but it’s going to be confusing for the new grandchild if they have to call OP’s mother a different name to all the other grandchildren and great grandchildren?

MissAdventure Tue 03-Dec-24 14:21:24

There isn't any should, though.
There isn't a rule book.

You haven’t said what your mother’s grandchildren and great grandchildren call her, so it’s hard to say if she is being unreasonable or not. If she is already Nanny to them then that’s what she should be to the new grandchild too, but if she is something else then she should be that name to the new grandchild too.

My mum was grandma to my children. When my daughter had a baby, she said she wanted to be grandma again. I pointed out that I would be grandma and she could be great grandma. She huffed and decided on GG. But my mum always has to be centre of attention

I had a Granny and a Grandma

I’m a granny!

But it really doesn’t matter!

The children will probably call you bing bong and noo noo or something.
That'll put paid to all the silliness.

I have never been called Nanny , Nan , Gran , Grannie nor Grandma by my grandchildren .
And two of my children don't always call me Mum nor Mummy .
Instead it's my distinctive pet name and sometimes there's a variation on it .
It's quite sweet so I don't mind , but some people are confused by it !

In our family there were Nannys in several generations, differentiated by adding their first or last name or other title, such as Nanny Pig and Nanny Cat according to their animals. Never any confusion. I think 'Grandma' sounds more straight-laced than I wanted to be.

Millie22 Tue 03-Dec-24 13:16:06

It's up to the individual.

I am nana and my mum is granma so the children don't get confused.

Witzend Tue 03-Dec-24 13:12:14

Both I and the other GM are Granny, with first name if needed. Could you not be e.g Nanny Ann and Nanny Sue?
It’s worked fine for us.

Fleurpepper Tue 03-Dec-24 13:10:41

I am Granny and proud of it. Our GCs always had a 'nanny'- well they had a few- young and very different to Granny.

As Miss I and MissA have said there are no rules. The only thing that matters is the care and love of the baby. Not disputes amongst ‘grown ups’

Well, there are no rules really, are there?

No, there are not. There must be endless variations on what grandparents are called. At the end of the day, does it really matter?

AIBU that as a new grandparents, who is refered to as Nanny by my kids and myself, my mother also wants to be called Nanny?

Back story she has 6 grand children already and 2 great grandchildren, from my children, her grandchildren
On a side note she also refers to my step dad of 53 years as 'Dad', not your dad so it sounds like we're sisters and he's our dad.
