AIBU that as a new grandparents, who is refered to as Nanny by my kids and myself, my mother also wants to be called Nanny?

Back story she has 6 grand children already and 2 great grandchildren, from my children, her grandchildren
On a side note she also refers to my step dad of 53 years as 'Dad', not your dad so it sounds like we're sisters and he's our dad.

I’m Nana, my choice. I worked for an Irish company and they use Nana and it sounded lovely with an Irish accent. My older grandchildren called me Nana Pebs and the other grandmother Nana Charlie after our dogs! My son remarried some years ago and our younger grandchildren call me Nana and other grandmother Grannie, she is Scottish and that is what is used in Scotland.

For anyone who says nanny is a goat or paid employee, Nanny or Nannie is a version of the Welsh name for grandmother, Nain. My Nain was Welsh so she was called Nan or Nanny by English me

No, they said it was her hair!

My children’ grandmothers were Black mum, as she had very dark hair, and Green mum… no idea why. She had greyish , blonde hair.

My mum was a GG also , sadly passed away last year but hearing my grandchildren still talk about GG it’s as if she ‘owned ‘ the term such affection .

Don't worry what they call you as long as they call you.

Get a life, if that's all you have to gripe about, lucky you.

I find it very patronised when people say nanny is a nursemaid or female goat, Nani is also a Welsh name for granny, or nanny. As my grandmother was Welsh she was called Nani or nanny and so was my mother and so am I. Because you have never heard of it it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I said that that was what my grandmother said - and she did. Not liking something cannot change the past.

I offered no personal opinion at all.

Bob! grandMattie ..that’s made me think of Blackadder😹 sorry…

Can’t you be Granny A and GrannyB? Why is it a problem?

grandMattie Thu 12-Dec-24 05:19:01

My mother’s name was Pauline, pronounced the French way (she was French). A childe we knew always called her “bobbine”, which is what she wanted her GC to call her. My youngest wanted to be more intimate and shortened it to”Bob”! She was thrilled.
Me? I’m grandma as I dislike nanny, and nanna, and had no desire to be granny as my own granny wasn’t nice. Bonne maman or meregrand were not on the cards.

Exactly this!

I'm Nannie, my mum and MiL are/were both Nannie, my GMs were both Nannie, and my great GMs were both Nannie. Anything else wouldn't have been right for us! But I don't 'bleat' on (see what I did there?grin about not liking certain names for GMs because they sound way too old. Each to their own! Call yourself whatever you're happy with, or whatever your GC decide to call you. Stop putting other people's choices down. So patronising!

My children called my parents Gumba and Bunga - no idea why but they loved it and were disappointed when they changed to calling them Grandpa and Grandma.
I’m called “Little grandma “( vertically challenged) but would have preferred Granny as that’s what I had called my grandmother, but it was already taken and certainly wasn’t going to make a fuss. I’m the only grandparent left on both sides now so just glad I’m still here.

I’m a Nana or Nana Pebs. Younger GC’s other Grandmother is called Grannie, she is Scottish. My mum when she was still alive was Grandma to my GC

Aw but it’s a term for love , my grandson called me Gag until
he was five . Gag, Dawg, Bro, Nan, Nanny, Granny, Gran are all terms of love and to mock is cruel and no accident

Oh yes, it's because she's cool.
A dawg. smile

Long standing tradition played a part in my family when it came to naming grandparents. We are Grandma and Grandad and the other grandparents were Gran and Pop. I am enjoying reading about all the lovely variations.

I'm a good old Scottish granny and proud of it! My children had two 'grannies', so when my son had his son, he wanted him to have a granny too.

The other nan to my older grandson is "dawg".
I'm not sure she had that in mind when she wanted us to be "big nan" and "little nan" smile
