A baby is a human child and that alone!

I always cringe when people refer to their animals as their babies but today was the final straw.

I went on an online forum for Thermomix, someone posted that “their baby had died”, she was affronted at posters being angry.

So this person was comparing a kitchen gadget to a human baby.
It shows a complete lack of emotional intelligence and maturity IMHO.

Am I being unreasonable?

One dog I owned was the love of my life. He was there for me when nobody else was. But he was a dog, not a child not a baby or furbaby. My companion and emotional support. I don't believe in dressing up animals with clothes or bandanas either.

Miserable bs. Never mind, takes all sorts and my two girls are purring next to me. Husband is watching tv, probably purring as well.

I wish I hadn't read this thread! What a lot of grumpy people.

As a huge animal lover any pets I've had over the years have been my babies as I don't like kids and chose never to have any but calling a kitchen gadget a baby and getting upset over it's ''death'' is utterly ridiculous!

When my kettle, microwave, washing machine, laptop, mobile... no longer work I get rid of it and get a new one, there's no ''hysterical crying that the fridge has died!''

I'm killing myself laughing here about the poster on Thermomix!

When I was a child I remember asking my mum why people always sang about their babies.

Am I the only person who has never heard of thermomix ?

No. I've not heard of it either

Neither have I.

The cost of a Thermomix and additional bits would cover the cost of a baby and a few years to preschool too. Can understand why OP calls it her baby. My neighbour is a District Manager for Thermomix and she is never at home, always flying away for another meeting or weekend treat on the company, hence the high cost me thinks. My pets were always my pets, never babies.

What about Baby Yoda (Grogu) in Mandelorian ?
I'm becoming slightly obsessed by him and wonder if I'm in danger of becoming one of those people who falls in love with cars or other inanimate objects....
🤣🤣🤣😉
Only sayin.......
Also I had a Baby Belling.

Plans are afoot in Japan to create AI android babies that are more beautiful than natural children, multi-talented, super intelligent, always polite and good-tempered, never poorly, never smelly and good at all sports.
No school fees, no medical issues, no food bills, no moody adolescent phases no emotional hassles. Perfect kids!

Like Stepford wives!!

I can imagine nothing worse than having a child without the individuality, querks, personality traits that makes them fully human, even the tantrums, the tidying up after, and the mess that says this is a real human love me for who I am.

But a dog is not a baby. Many people would choose many things in preference to a baby, but they do not then call their preference a baby - and mean it.

ViceVersa Wed 12-Mar-25 13:35:35

To some people, their animal may be the most important thing in their life. I've said before that I'd choose my dog over most humans any day of the week.

Do you not realise how very important animals are to some people ? How insensitive.

To compare a child to an animal…..how insensitive.

LaCrepescule Wed 12-Mar-25 12:07:07

Why do you let how other people behave bother you so much?

Jolene2 Wed 12-Mar-25 12:01:56

What sane woman would want to have a baby in this day and age?

Girls, the world is (finally) your oyster.

Silverbrooks

Indigo8

Did anyone ever have a Baby Belling?

No Silverbrooks but I was the proud mother of a Baby Burco at one time.grin

I'd forgotten about those. Small cooker, small boiler. One for sale if you are interested!

Baby burco boiler belonging to my grandmother who used this for years to boil tea towels.

And Baby Belling! Often found in bedsits in the past - maybe still are, only nobody calls them bedsits now - they’re studio flats, which do at least come with a bathroom. People in bedsits usually had to share.

With the advent of AI androids. natural babies will become extinct. The android child will look prettier than a real child, and he or she will not have tantrums. They will not be noisy or smelly, and the parents will always get a night's sleep.
The androids will also be programmed to develop physically until they are eighteen. Thereafter, they will remain young and beautiful for a century or more. What's not to like?

I can speak meow and my girls answer me, too. I have a perfect meow accent. I heard one of them singing loudly and realised a fox was trying to get in through the catflap.

😂😂😂

Yes, it is silly, but it's also fairly harmless, mostly. So live and let live.
I must admit that my car has a name and I always refer to it as 'she'. So I'm silly too. 😁

Sago I like my Thermomix, it is really useful, when it dies I will be cross.

If I started telling my AC that baby had died referring to an inanimate kitchen gadget, I am sure they would be calling for the men in white jackets for me…

The first time I visit Paris was as a child. I came across a poodle outside a shop and I told it how beautiful it was in English. The dog just looked puzzled. My father spoke to it in French and it immediately perked up and wagged its tail.
