That’s my question escaped. How is it possible to look someone up on grandnet and find they’re friends with each other. Makes no sense
How do you find out ANTHING about a poster by "looking someone up" on Gransnet, let alone who their "friends" are? The only way you can look someone up is to search for them in the searchbox - and then you only find out (a few of) the posts they have made. There is no need to have their own private address to contact them, anyway. You can do that via the "Private message" button, which sends a message to their GN inbox. That procedure is well-known to the famiar names on GN. I think butterandjam is flying a kite.
I've been wondering this since I first read it and decided it can't be true, unless GN has features I am entirely unaware of. Which is always possible
Thanks Kelly gransnet

I received a PM from a familiar name poster I've never communicated with on forum or privately, offering me the email address of another familiar-name poster I've never
communicated with online or privately. I looked them up on GN and they are "friends" with each other.
I was horrified that ANY poster here would reveal another's private email address to a total stranger and reported it to Gransnet.
Zero response.
Hi butterandjam, we don't appear to have received a report about this PM from you. Could you please report it again so we can take a look into this? Thanks in advance.
True M0nica*, but if for example I sent a PM to butterandjam with your email address on because we are friends off Gransnet, it could also be a genuine breach of confidentiality (disclaimer, this is a fictitious scenario!). If it happened to me, I’d double check the name of the sender to make sure it was a usual Gransnet poster, ie no discrepancy in the typing of their name, and if it was genuine, I think I’d send them both a PM through Gransnet saying what had happened.
Read up thread. This could be the work of a troll saying they have this information, but providing no proof.
You do not have to have someone's details tot ell them you have them.
For example someone could send a PM to Casdon saying that they had all my details and knew who I was, without providing any evidence because what they say is untrue.
There is also software available that enables person A to send person B a post with Person C named as sender.
The rule is never to respond to phishing PMs like this. I have received quite a number. I just block them.
Unless X posts that she has met up with Y, or somebody says they have emailed Z. I have seen posts saying those things on Gransnet, often around banned or long absent posters, said in all innocence?
My question would be whether, if it does happen that X,Y or Z then offer the email address of another of them to A (in this case butterandjam), is it anything to do with the Gransnet mods, and what could they do about it?

That's bad,
i) That someone on GN would offer another member's email address and
ii) That GNHQ didn't respond to your concerns when you reported this.
Genuine question, ........
How would we know if posters are "friends" with each other on GN?

I wouldn't assume that either of the posters is involved. I've seen trolls (not on GN) cause trouble by setting posters against one another in similar ways. It got very upsetting for a lot of people, but it was all a 'game' to the person doing it.

I have received a private message concerning some on here getting my surname asking me to contact him by e mail and i have blocked him. This is the only forum i an on I don't do facebook, buy on line etc so I consider it a breach of my privacy,
Are you saying that they know your real name rather than your GN name?
Don't let it worry you, it's random and most of us have had PM s of varying degrees of bonkers.
Report and block the sender (you can see the symbol at the top) 🚫
