I don’t remember writing one as a teenager and certainly haven’t kept any but when my grandaughters were born 16 years ago I started to write one then about us as a family after the birth. I still write in it. Circumstances have changed and we all live together now . 2 daughters, teenagers and me.

I'm still writing mine!

My eldest daughter ( now in her forties) discovered her teenage diaries, and felt that she needed to share with me the entry " I wish my mother was dead"...
Oh well, we survived, and she has found me more palatable with each passing year.

Yes I did, and I day dreamed in mine. My mother read it and there was a furious row. Never wrote in it again. Never trusted my mother again. Kept all my hopes and dreams to myself

I think more people now keep a record of their lives via their social media and photos. It doesn’t describe their feelings though.

I have written a diary since I was 10 , in Covid I got them all out and read them all , some very happy memories and some not so happy , I had forgotten so much of my teens and it was a shock to read some of the things I got up to with my best friend !
I went to college and did a secretarial course , there is one year that I wrote a lot of entries in shorthand , it was the year I met my first husband , I can't read shorthand anymore and don't know anyone else that can so those comments will remain a mystery which is probably just as well.
I will leave them for my children to read if they want to , the only year I have actually thrown away is when my first marriage broke down and there are things I wrote about my ex that I would not want my children to read , I am surprised how nasty I was!

There’s a wonderful podcast called My Teenage Diaries. I listened to a couple but the rest are on Audible. The ones I listened to were Anneka Rice and Gyles Brandreth ( who I never particularly liked till I listened to this). I didn’t keep one as a teenager but did keep one as a young mother. Reading it saddens me as it’s so long ago now.

Did you have one as a teenager ?Did you keep them & can read all of your exploits, worries , memories?

Do you still have one?

My DDx2 recently turned 50, yes 50 . Sadly that is just a year younger than my own Mum was when she passed away 😢💔
I digress .

Taking down a garden shed recently we uncovered a few boxes of my DD & DS teenage belongings.
I have no idea how they got into the shed but we managed to recover a lot of stuff that wasn’t spoiled .

And yes , her teenage diaries & letters from friends .

I put them all together in a box for her 50th Birthday 🎁
she now has Teenage girls 18,14,12 .
Omg what a laugh they all
had , she was the original version of Adrian Mole when you read the diaries .

However what struck us was that these teenagers my own GDs won’t have any of this as it’s all done on electronic gadgets, mobile phones mostly .
Where will all those memories be ?
The future will not hold those for them to be found in a shed , an attic or the back of a cupboard sadly .
I know my DD will spend many hours with her own DD’s & all those memories written in felt tip pen , scrawled every few days pages at a time .
They in turn will be able to continue to read & remember the times they all say together reading .

So , do you still have those innocent diaries , the ones that say ‘ today I
kissed …,,,, ’
‘ Gail & I bunked off of school, Mum came back from work early . We hid behind the end of the bed , I sat on top of Gail , i’m not sure how Mum didn’t hear us laughing 😆
I asked Mum if I could go to Cardiff with …… , she said ‘No’ I’ll ask her again tomorrow if she says no again , I’ll know she means it !!

Those sort of things !

For myself , I have suitcase of my own Mum’s letters & from those I have written a biography of her life for our whole extended family.
