Heatwave

AIBU to be feeling actually depressed at the prospect of yet another heatwave? I thought I liked summer. Now I don’t even want to go outside. It’s going to be a long weekend….( and after cooling down next week, I think it’s heating up for the fourth time after that.)

There are reports of artificial grass catching fire. If you have any, it might be wise to water it.

4allweknow Fri 11-Jul-25 17:12:55

Excessive heat is unusual for us and we just don't know how to adapt. Think of a lot of Europeans who shut down in the afternoon and pick up again in the evening when its cooler. We just carry on as usual.

Great for the solar panels though!

🌞

Unfortunately solar panels don't work at their best when they overheat. We get our best results in Spring on days when we have plenty of sun but it's not too hot.

Ever since I was a baby I've always absolutely hated sun/heat/summer/heatwaves, can't abide such weather. I totally dread each and every time.

If I was a lot younger and financially able I'd legally immigrate to Siberia! I'd spend time learning their beautiful language and hanging around in the gorgeous cold snow!

I agree with you about heat, but actually Siberia is quite warm in summer.

Granless Fri 11-Jul-25 16:10:26

Plot your day accordingly - to the heat.
To me this is the season of ‘Summer’ - just like we used to get. 😅

ginny

At least those of us who enjoy summer weather are getting a fairer share.
There are those of us who suffer far more in our usual wet and chilly weather.

You said it perfectly @ginny! I understand some folks are suffering but I personally am loving it.

I definitely don’t want summer to end. I just want the temperature to drop about 8 degrees. I want the light nights to go on forever.

Ali61 Fri 11-Jul-25 15:39:13

I can't stand these temperatures - anything over 24 is also too much for me. I'm just hiding indoors, reading under the fan. I always feel that being kept inside by the heat is worse than being kept inside by ice and snow! In winter you can get cosy and watch a film, bake a cake or cookies, drink hot chocolate and just indulge yourself a bit because it's winter! When the weather turns like this in the summer you feel you should be enjoying it - but let's face it 33⁰ is not enjoyable!! Roll on Autumn I say! ☺️

Babamaman AIBU means

Am I being unreasonable?

missdeke Fri 11-Jul-25 15:34:04

The front of my house never gets any sun on it, so is very cool, the back of the house gets it all day so too hot. But, sorry ladies, I do love the hot weather and wish we had hot summers every year. I can't stand the cold, wet, dreary grey days of winter.

Babamaman Fri 11-Jul-25 15:32:21

What does AIBU mean?

Lollin Fri 11-Jul-25 15:31:03

I absolutely had to drive earlier today and forgot to open the windowsto try and release some heat. I was a wet mess by the time I reached my destination. I will not moan because others like it, but like my young plants, I’ve had enough.

sharon103 Fri 11-Jul-25 14:59:23

As my auntie used to say 'I feel like a bit of chewed string'

karmalady Fri 11-Jul-25 14:51:28

32 outside just now and I am managing to keep my living room at 26. I had an hour outside yesterday, in the heat, I had a job to do and it didn`t take long for my body to feel the effects. As soon as possible, I went indoors and had water with a pinch of salt

Yes perspiring is good, the whole of my body was soaking this morning after breakfast, A cool wash and no drying helped. I spent the whole of the rest of today working on a sewing project, I have a dyson pedestal fan in the doorway to my sewing room, which faces E/SE so gets the full sun blast until about 2pm. I work with windows closed, insulating reflective perfect fit blinds on the window plus pale wooden plantation shutters, fully closed. It is a good mix, as good as can be

No outside anything, until this evening and at least now at 2.45 I can have all the shutters opened on the E/SE side, I see daylight

Appetite is poor just now, sleeping is not good and my body was born in january, I like cold and went to iceland for a holiday once, loved it, the cold and the rain

I would like an awning but not worth it as they do deteriorate with uv and anyway don`t stop a low sun. We used to live in a genuine eco house and had a verandah but that house still got too hot, heat sink walls and a heat sink floor

The hospitals will be having many heat casualties, not just the oldies

cc Fri 11-Jul-25 14:34:54

We've had two air con units for a couple of years and the one in the bedroom works well, but the one in the living room struggles as it is a large room in a top floor flat. Even if we shut the blinds and pull the awning down over the living room windows it does get hotter as the day goes on. If a building stores heat in its walls and roof the cooler evening breezes don't drop the temperature by much.
I'm absolutely no use in the heat, I look as though somebody has poured water over my head.

sandye Fri 11-Jul-25 14:05:32

Us up north don't get much heat, so far we have had about 2 hot days. So yes please another heatwave good.

Lizzies Fri 11-Jul-25 14:04:41

I moved into an older park home last year and when it was hot it got like an oven inside. I had external insulated cladding fitted earlier this year and I thought that would keep it cooler. Wrong. I have to have all the windows open and the door to get some air circulating and it is still boiling inside. My thermometer has got up to 41 and it doesn’t cool down overnight. Oh well, I hope keeps the heat in as well in winter.

knspol Fri 11-Jul-25 13:58:58

It was 37 degrees on the outside thermometer yesterday afternoon and didn't feel much cooler inside! Will be trying AskAlice's idea re feet in bowl of cold water later. Slept downstairs last night as it was cooler than the bedrooms. roll on winter!

bookwormbabe Fri 11-Jul-25 13:22:17

It's not just the temperature, it's the humidity that kills me. I literally drip with sweat in this weather. I read somewhere that excessive sweating can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium), because of the salt leaving the body, which can be very dangerous. I have bought myself some sachets of electrolytes for when the sweating gets out of hand.

JenniferEccles Fri 11-Jul-25 12:46:05

Is your fan quiet Aldom ?
I keep thinking about buying one for the bedroom, so it would have to be quiet, or at least just a gentle hum.

Aldom Fri 11-Jul-25 09:50:41

Early evening I sit with my feet in a bowl of tepid water and Epsom salt. It helps me to sleep and I really feel the benefit the next morning.
I also have a small fan which is on my bedside table. I leave it on all night and sleep through till morning. The fan is John Lewis ANYDAY 4" handheld fan. It's rechargeable and a charge lasts the night. Only £12.

We have a North facing kitchen and dining room, bliss at the moment. The kitchen has a Velux and makes an air flow with an open upstairs window.
Fortunately the garden is not overlooked so despite being N facing from the house, it gets sun all year round.
Strangely enough I’m sleeping really well in the heat!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 11-Jul-25 08:30:24

Oh and when I got up this morning our heating was on😮😮.

It had defaulted to January😄😊.

But it did show that the house was pleasantly cool though.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 11-Jul-25 08:29:31

We have solar panels, I am washing everything that I can for free in this glorious weather.

We also have an under lawn rainwater storage tank, so that we can water the garden (and DH’s precious lawn) guilt free.

We haven’t got air conditioning (yet) we do have large ceiling fans in all upstairs rooms, it’s surprising what a difference they make, especially in the evening/night time.

I love this weather, I put it down to being a summer baby 🌞🌞🌞
