Heatwave

My children both have solar panels and air-con. So they are cooling their house for free.

Good tip for anyone thinking about that.

Our roof is too old we think to cope with solar panels.

We are beginning to get into a pattern now.

6am - early morning pottering in the garden - our garden faces S/W so has a degree of shade in the mornings, - the sun chases us nearer and nearer to the house😊. Front windows and curtains remain closed.

Breakfast - all parasols are up and the bottom terrace - nearest the house is now in deep shade - where we sit.

9-10 sun is in all parts of the garden. Back windows and curtains are now closed.

Potter around in the house until coffee, the DH (heart) will remain resting - easily done with the tennis etc - he is a huge sport fan.

I will sit under the shaded parasol or indoors if it gets too oppressive.

After lunch we both relax completely.

Between 6-7 or possible before we venture outdoors and I will barbecue our meal, or whatever.

We spend the evening enjoying the dying heat until bedtime where upon all the curtains are drawn back and windows wide open.

We have also upped our fluids.

DH has heart problems and this heat is very heavy going for him - and others like him.

Theres' a lovely sun set tonight. I am hoping the sky will be clear and everything will cool down.
We bought an air con unit last week which I have run today? Very effective. It kept a normally hot bedroom very cool...with the door shut.

I have just opened all the doors and windows to let a breeze in, but am not looking forward to tomorrow when we are forecast 34 deg.
25 deg I like and can enjoy it in the garden and out and about. 34 is so isolating. I am like a cave dweller.
But I did buy a pair of black spanish fans on A.....n and they are ace. One in my bag for when I venture out, one for indoors when it gets too much.

This is the 3rd heatwave...will we get another? And we are not even halfway through July.

I love summer but can barely function in this heat. Also my tummy is a bit wobbly. DH, however, has cut the grass, tidied the garage and been shopping. Don’t know how he does it and he’s older than me.

And some of us have Hagaan Dazs ice cream in our freezers, hidden behind boring frozen peas so our grandchildren don’t know they’re there

😯
You're very norty!

I do hope the DGC have some ice pops (or healthy alternatives!).

I've never tried Hagaan Daz icecream, must buy some.

I’m not a fan of the heat either. I’m OK up to about 24°c, but above that I start wilting. At 30°c, I really suffer. Cannot do anything in the garden, and the two greenhouses (full of cacti and succulents) have to just get on with it. It’s too hot even for them!

I have IBS, and my digestive system starts complaining too.

I’m on the border of London and Surrey, so we get some of the hottest weather, and often miss out on any rain that’s around.

I find that sitting in a shady spot in the garden (if you have one) or even indoors with my feet in a washing-up bowl of cold water really helps. The downside is that my feet and toes look like prunes after half an hour or so! Also running cold water for a couple of minutes over the inside of my wrists cools me down instantly if I'm starting to feel the effects of the hot weather.

Casdon, my kitchen dining room is the biggest room in the house. I planned it when mr i was alive, we often had big family or friendship groups round. Both loved cooking and entertaining. Me alone, less frequent anyway, I agreed with our builder, lots of glass. Patio doors, windows and three large velux windows. I love this room but it’s getting very warm in this weather. So that’s where the fan is. The big utility area off the kitchen is where the dogs eat, sleep and go when visitors arrive. Luckily I chose cold stone tiles. Not because I’m wise, they were on offer. So they combine with the fan to help the dogs stay cool

At least those of us who enjoy summer weather are getting a fairer share.
There are those of us who suffer far more in our usual wet and chilly weather.

Casdon Thu 10-Jul-25 18:55:54

I wish my dog would lie down in front of the fan Iam64, my house is quite cool downstairs as it has a void underneath because it’s built into a slope, which is good for us, but means when the dog hasn’t been walked as long as usual because it’s too hot outside, he dashes around inside, following every move I make, and making a nuisance of himself. If I’m lucky he’ll settle by 9.

keepingquiet Thu 10-Jul-25 18:50:15

I am lucky to have a cool house- I hardly ever go out these days!

Iam64 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:40:15

I’m doing the same viceversa, I need to drink water for my kidneys as well
My dogs are both lying in front of the fan and drinking lots of water

Haha, I do that too - but it's to hide them from OH!
I am trying not to moan and to enjoy the heat while it's here, but one of the medications I'm on makes it even harder to tolerate the heat. I think I did get a little bit dehydrated yesterday too, so I've been making a concerted effort to drink more water today.

And we have Magnums and Fruit Pastille lollies😊

Finding intense heat oppressive is one of the many downsides of being older. Still, we are alive 🌞

Stillness Thu 10-Jul-25 17:46:16

Oh it makes me feel poorly too! Not in the greatest health right now so it doesn’t help does it.

Grandmadinosaur Thu 10-Jul-25 17:44:40

You are not alone Stillness in not looking forward to the heatwave.

The older I get the heat makes me feel almost physically sick. I’m fit for nothing but sitting close to the fan. All that time wasted when I have things I could be getting on with. At least it’s an excuse to sit and watch the tennis!

Calendargirl Thu 10-Jul-25 17:37:20

Great for the solar panels though!

AIBU to be feeling actually depressed at the prospect of yet another heatwave? I thought I liked summer. Now I don’t even want to go outside. It’s going to be a long weekend….( and after cooling down next week, I think it’s heating up for the fourth time after that.)
