I cannot stand it either. Once I knocked on a door a street away, and the girl had no idea the noise had travelled so far, so she turned it down immediately.

I have told previous neighbours that I do not want to share their noise.

I don't mind an all-night raucous party, but only once a year.
Please let me know. Yes, I am a misery guts. I prefer silence.

I sympathise. We had to move years ago due to terrible neighbours. They had a teenage son who didn’t work and would get up about 11 AM to play his music so loudly that it rattled the plates on my dresser. I worked from home at the time and it almost gave me a breakdown. I complained to his mother who wouldn't believe me as she said he was out at work all day. After I complained the parents would regularly go away at weekends and the boy would have friends round all night and they would play their music at full volume all night, sometimes deliberately turning it up and down. The father would also play loud music in the garden. I still feel guilty that we sold the house to a widower with two young children who moved again within six months.

You should have got on to the council- that would have been my next step.

We did and the Police but nothing was ever done. In fact I think it made matters worse. The husband nailed a cross on our fence saying ‘Beware of Witches’. My normally gentle husband went round and threatened the little twerp and things quietened down for a while but we couldn’t stay there. We lost a lot of money on the house as we had to sell at for what we’d paid for it but it was worth it. Sadly these days you have to declare any disputes with neighbours so I doubt we would ever have been able to sell.

Goodness that’s terrible- I know you have to put any disputes down when you are moving house. That’s a shame you had to move.

We have a neighbour who has a motorbike and seems to run the engine endlessly without actually going anywhere! He will work away in his drive without considering that the noise may be driving his neighbours potty! The other day, it was accompanied by a loud operatic performance on a radio. I had no idea that Verdi had included a part for a motorcycle engine in La Traviata. Hmm! This morning, he was at it again, but sans opera!

We have people opposite but 4 houses along that play incessant very loud music & have upset all the neighbours. I feel sorry for the international students next door to them who can't concentrate or study. We might do the same back, din-wars.

Oh no! I fully see your point I would feel the same. But think about the poor students who would then be a ‘music sandwich’

There's no need for anyone to play their music that loud, it's selfish to say the least. so Dragonfly, you are certainly not being unreasonable....I think it's a type of bullying

Hopefully it is not a normal occurrence as my DD has just commented on it, she is not happy!

To be honest, I’d find any sort of music (classical, pop, jazz, folk, country - whatever) annoying if played so loudly as to be a nuisance to others.

No, you’re not being unreasonable. I’d hate it and would be sitting fidgeting or hiding inside. It’s a matter of good manners, this doesn’t seem to be a one off party or special event. If we’re gardening or just sitting relaxing we never play music outside so others can hear. Mr C isn’t interested and I use ear buds. Noise pollution is difficult to be relaxed in. Having said that if it’s a regular occurrence isn’t it a good thing your daughter and son in law don’ t seem to mind?

We have noisy neighbours. A few years ago the husband had the cheek to knock on our door complaining about noise from a workman we had doing work in our house. I gave him short shrift saying we had put up with noise from them for years. This was mostly regular bbqs at weekends. These started at 2 in the afternoon with a host of guests arriving, constant drinking and them getting louder and louder throughout the day and up to midnight and sometimes the early hours.

The look on his face told me it hadn’t occurred to them that this was a nuisance to us. His wife came round and apologised. So it could be that people don't realise they are causing a problem to others.

Sound is really magnified outside with the movement of air, and far more than if the noise was inside a building. It doesn't matter if it's a radio and someone listening to a cricket match, kids playing music or, heaven forbid, the local bore broadcasting to the nation in a deadly dull mobile phone conversation. Nobody has the right to inflict their 'noise' on others and even if they are not self-centred peasants, tone deaf builders or are simply hard of hearing, they are certainly not cool and essentially out of touch.

There is no excuse for anyone in today's world to inflict their 'musical choice' on others when it's easy and only sensible to listen to any personal choice - at any volume, location or time - through noise-cancelling headphones or ear buds.

Does anyone ever think what life would be like if, say, in a small area half a dozen other neighbours enjoying their own gardens did the same? Clearly people who make a hell of a noise in their own gardens have never given this a thought.

Some noise can't be controlled or is temporarily unavoidable, but people just creating a din and inflicting that on those 'just over the hedge?' Inexcusable.

What is it we're told? Noise is actually a form of violence.

Have a party and warn/invite your neighbours, celebrate some one-off occasion maybe, but for regular use and enjoyment of an outdoor space, try to think of neighbours really looking forward to dozing, reading, eating or just listening to the birds..........in their space and in peace!

Absolutely not. I had neighbors that drove me mad at night, would go to pub & then party until silly O’clock. I had to get up early for my shift, so one morning I got up & put some monastery chanting music on, cranked it up & played on repeat ha- never did they play loud music again.
During the day I don’t know what you can do- me I would have a word with them & see if they would turn it down a notch or two🤞

I cannot bear it.
When we first moved here the family next door used to put their radiogram (!) on loud, open the windows, and sunbathe at the far end of the garden. Fortunately they moved after three noisy years.

Ooft, it's not just youngsters who like that type of music - guilty as charged here, but I always play it on my headphones when I'm sitting in the garden, so I'm not inflicting it on anyone else.

You are not being at all unreasonable dragonfly. I would hate it too.

Hmmm…….trying living next door to our neighbours……he thinks, because he works full time and only has weekends to do his diy that it’s perfectly acceptable to start at 7am……….very, very close to our bedroom window,! 🤬🤬🤬

Is my opinion.
It doesnt bother everyone though.

That would be my concern about moving house.
The house could be lovely. Right location. Future proofed etc.
But music next door would be awful, as far as I am concerned.
