The person ,
who answered your call is so irresponsible.
What an incredibly stupid idea -expecting you to pop in to check .
Anything could have been wrong .
Even if you were a superfit 20 year old -a burglar could have jumped out and attacked you .
It's not exactly reassuring that your concern wasn't addressed for five hours .
Imagine if the gentleman had been unconscious .
It doesn't bode well for the future ,does it ?

Police would not have entered the building alone, expecting a member of the public to do so is wrong.

You did the right thing by staying put.

I know it sounds gloomy and dramatic, but it could have been a crime scene, you might have walked in to the man sprawled out with a knife in him, so you also might have been in danger.

I appreciate your concern for your neighbour!

This happened to me many years ago, when I lived in my house alone except for my two dogs. I came home late one night and fell asleep on the sofa leaving the two dogs sitting by the wide open door. I awoke to find my neighbour accompanied by a policeman standing outside the garden gate wondering if they dared come into the garden past my German shepherd and my collie at the front door .

Then you did the right thing Dee1012.

Patsy70, if it was a house I would have done so but the flats have a layout with the front door and then a rather steep flight of stairs to a long hallway....the kitchen and rear door are to the end of that hall.
If anyone was there (that shouldn't have been!), your exit could easily be blocked.

No, you’re not being unreasonable, due to your circumstances. However, if it was me, I would have gone to see if anything was amiss, before calling the Police, clutching my mobile phone!

Last night I noticed that the flat opposite me had the front door wide open (this was around 6.00 p.m), I thought that was slightly odd as nobody was around so kept an eye on it to see if anything happened.
After an hour or so, I still hadn't witnessed any movement. I don't really know the occupant except to nod / smile but it's an older man.
My son who lives close was in work and none of the neighbours appeared to be in so I called the Police on their non - emergency line, explained my concerns and asked if someone could check - the person on the phone asked "could you pop over and have a look."
AIBU in that I refused which seemed to be surprising to the call handler?
I did explain my health isn't that great, I'm in my late 60's and I'd be going into an upstairs flat alone!!
Thankfully, a neighbour from further along arrived a few hours later and was happy to check briefly - we were both concerned there had been an accident or something untoward. We also closed the door...the Police eventually arrived just before 11.00 pm to check.
