AIBU to expect this forum to be for just women? At least that was my impression but after receiving a (unwelcome) private message from a man, I’m wondering if I’ve got this wrong? (And yes, I have blocked him).

Some years ago there was a very nice man on Gransnet. I used to talk to him a lot and was very sad when he died suddenly.

I always thought it would be a mixture. I can understand the confusion because of what it is called. I don't have grandchildren but someone said many the chats about various subjects were very interesting so I joined.

Mick and David49 are gentleman and of course are welcome.
There are one or two other regulars that are fine (Wetherspoons)!

grumppa's posts are always appreciated.

paulow

To be honest, as a man I as a bit hesitant over whether I would be allowed to join in the first place, but it all seems ok. However the last thing I would do would be to send an unsolicited private message to anyone, it doesn't strike me as acceptable behaviour anyway.

Do join in paulow

The last unsolicited message I had from a man said how much he admired my posts
At least someone reads them. 😂

Although he might be interested in your money, Marydoll. Sorry to be so cynical ….

It was obvious he/she is a scammer, which is why I reported and blocked.I hope no-one is naive or foolish enough to respond to him.

How would you know whether a poster is male unless he says so? I just reply to the post, and the sex of the poster makes no difference to my reply (why would it?).

There have been men on here for as long as I've posted, and they are welcome, as far as I'm concerned, so long as they don't assume that being male gives them special status - just as in 'real life', really. 😀

A few us heard from Roberto. But i think he has gone now!

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect Gransnet to be for women, especially if one is new here - when I was looking for a decent forum, I initially thought Gransnet was aimed at women. The homepage articles appear to be mostly for women, judging by the photos for the articles.

However, I had a good look at the forum and saw that it is in fact welcoming to men as well. So here I am. A sixty-something (not too grumpy I hope) bloke.

As with any forum, members shouldn't have to deal with unwanted attention, and blocking / reporting is the right thing to do.

Unfortunately we had one fairly recently that wanted to discuss stockings and of course the crude Antipodean who some of you loved.

Ah just remembering another rather odd control freak who caused so much trouble.

On the whole there are probably not enough men unless some of you are posting with female pseudonyms.

Casdon

It’s an open forum, so anybody can join, and men are welcome - but anybody who sends you unsolicited private messages which aren’t appropriate obviously isn’t, be they male or female. You did the right thing to block and report.

I agree with all the comments in Casdon's post.

I don’t get pms from random chaps on here. I do get regular friend requests on Facebook from incredibly good looking American men. They’re usually military vets looking for friendship 😀

MT62 Tue 03-Mar-26 16:59:54

I like reading Micks post, ‘ the good morning’ just to see what kind of day he’s having, & the other grans replies back to him.

Stillness Tue 03-Mar-26 16:26:31

If that is who he really is…..and that’s the downside of social media.

I had one from a guy telling me I was "fabulous". Obviously I am, blush grin but how did he know?

Marydoll Tue 03-Mar-26 16:06:40

I have just reported 'David'

Check him out. I am sure he would not be interested in a seventy year old biddy!

Yes, Oreo that’s the one.
My post isn’t about how to deal with the message. I can deal with that….also get them on fb at times….
It was primarily questioning whether men are intended to be able to use the forum. And I think I’ve got the answer, thank you.

Oreo Tue 03-Mar-26 15:46:06

American, according to him.

Oreo Tue 03-Mar-26 15:45:30

It was David7.

Grannynannywanny Tue 03-Mar-26 15:30:39

I think Bens has been busy this week. I had one which I reported, deleted and blocked.

Oreo Tue 03-Mar-26 15:28:38

😆

Galaxy Tue 03-Mar-26 15:27:57

Don't you start with that Oreogrin

David49 Tue 03-Mar-26 15:27:32

I just got one too, friendly but unwelcome so I just blocked the sender, no need to report.
This site is for women, men and anything in between 😁

Granatlast007 Tue 03-Mar-26 15:11:15

I had a private message too, wondered whether to report it? So many scams about these days, it's wise to be wary. Perhaps it's cheaper to use GN than dating online?
