What are the BBC thinking??!

Just watching the morning news on BBC1 and of course is all about the heatwave. The section about schools starts by showing a close up of two children’s backsides in shorts - presumably in gym kit - the boys backside in longer shorts but the girls backside in very short shorts.
Why on earth is this being used??!!

BlueBelle Fri 26-Jun-26 06:06:02

A girl in a leotard …
personally, I don’t see anything terrible, as she was with her Dad presumably she wasn’t a teen, just a young kid who had finished her dance class and calling in the supermarket for a snack most probably.
Girls have always worn short shorts, in my generation I remember turning waists over on skirts , shorts etc didn’t you FallingStar ?

Clothes rarely play a part in child abuse… opportunity does…. hence abuse is most often in the family or close neighbourhood

For the OP, YES, you certainly ARE making a fuss about nothing!

IF you want to blame the BBC, why not instead blame the PARENTS for sending kids out dressed (as YOU think) inappropriately? Why not launch a search so you can try and get them prosecuted?? Maybe THEY don't agree -- perhaps THEY have moved into the present century (give it a try perhaps??) and as several comments have said, girls for some time have been confident/liberated enough to wear what many of us would call 'skimpy' - and it's routine for them.

NB -- in just about every heatwave we've had, for 20 or 30 years, assorted TV companies send out camera crews to various 'baking' seaside vistas, with all manner of body parts on show that would be best covered up. HAVE YOU BEEN constantly complaining? If not, WHY NOT??

As another comment said, children are most at risk from neighbouring or family perverts, not voyeur strangers.

Are the shouty capitals really necessary looks like I am not the only one who can complain. At least my complaint wasn’t personal.
Perhaps you should take time to consider that we are all entitled to our opinions, and if the hot weather is bothering you for goodness sake suck a lolly!

Sago

The BBC don’t think but not do some parents, I was in Waitrose one Saturday morning and a man walked in with his daughter of about 12/13 in just a leotard.

Sago, sleeveless, I hope. Sounds quite sensible wear in this weather. What on earth did you think was wrong with this?

Sago Fri 26-Jun-26 09:25:43

I am really at a loss to understand the naivety here.

I have worked with looked after children in a school setting and with a children’s rights participation team.
I know how vulnerable some of these young people are and how many predatory adults there are out there.

Seeing a young girl in a skin tight leotard with sprouting breasts and a ponytail in a busy supermarket on a Saturday morning is highly inappropriate imo.

I am not saying for one minute this child is going to be physically molested because of her appearance but she will be fulfilling someone’s fantasy.

I hear you Sago, but am afraid I am not going to discuss this further if all other posters can do is get nasty.
On this thread and others I try to respect others opinions and not make nasty personal comments.
And with that I will take my leave because I am going through a really tough time now and don’t need the extra aggravation.

No, it's the BBC who go out with huge professional TV cameras and film lots of footage, then choose a tiny proportion of that footage to show. Of all the many thousands of people who were filmed out and about, wearing all manner of attire, the editors chose to show that particular shot.

AGAA4 Fri 26-Jun-26 10:15:27

Fallingstar 💐 I think quite a few posters missed your point about the BBC filming the children's backsides which was totally wrong.

Oreo Fri 26-Jun-26 10:20:08

Fallingstar💐I think most of us got what you meant.
I always feel sorry for innocent overweight passers by caught on BBC cameras when obesity matters crop up too.

Chestnut Fri 26-Jun-26 10:28:15

Fallingstar I'm sorry to hear you're having problems, hope things improve. Yes, people on these forums do sometimes go on a personal attack instead of accepting and respecting someone's opinion.

As I said in my last post, it's the editors who choose what to show out of all the footage taken. I've seen many dubious hot weather shots which have clearly been chosen because they show young women wearing skimpy clothes.

I haves just returned from our nearest market town, the main car park had at least half a dozen white vans pulled up with men inside, it was 3.30 and lots of teenage schoolgirls with rolled up shirts and skirts were walking toward Tesco.

I watched the men watching the girls.

I’m afraid like it or not there are many perverts.

I caught one pervert in a busy shopping centre filming young girls, security were useless.

Never be complacent.

You were also watching teenage schoolgirls with rolled up shirts and shorts.

You were also watching men.

Are you a pervert? Or just a people watcher?

Watching girls or men is not proof of sexual perversion.

Steady on, butterandjam: your criticism of Sago is over the top and those remarks are very much uncalled for!

Padstow, you got there before me but asking someone if they’re a pervert is totally abhorrent and I think you should ask for that to be taken down.. Terrible thing to say..😡

Fallingstar Fri 26-Jun-26 10:40:42

I do think there are some posters getting hot under the collar and making nasty comments.
But have come back on to thank those who made kind replies and sent flowers.
Much appreciated xx

MissAdventure Fri 26-Jun-26 11:12:40

I absolutely agree with you, fallingstar, for what it's worth.
(Bog all, I'm sure!)
Some people seem to be just looking for an excuse to have an argument.

Chestnut Fri 26-Jun-26 11:13:25

Steady on, I don't think butterandjam was really asking Sago if she is a pervert. It was an open question based on the fact that she'd seen people watching people, which is what we all do! Most of us love watching people, it's fascinating.

And yes, you will see women and girls with almost nothing on and you will see men watching them. It's human nature. I absolutely agree there will be some of them with salacious thoughts in their heads, but there is nothing we can do about that. Just as there is nothing we can do about the way young girls dress. It's up to their parents to make them understand that skimpy clothing can attract the wrong kind of attention.

MissAdventure Fri 26-Jun-26 11:20:13

There's nothing wrong with a young girl wearing skimpy shorts.
As far as I'm concerned, there's something wrong with focusing a camera on her backside and filming it.

You'd think the BBC might tread a little more carefully.

Sago Fri 26-Jun-26 12:16:01

Shinamae Thank you but really the comment from butterandjam is so vitriolic I am sure that every poster who has read it thinks it’s ridiculous too.

FallingStar Don’t let the b*******s get you down, this forum is often a welcome distraction from issues we may be having.
I hope you feel better soon.

Being a people watcher is not proof of being a pervert. As my post clearly stated.

Perhaps I should have asked Sago if she drives a white van,

Is driving a white van proof of being a sexual pervert?

Delila Fri 26-Jun-26 13:46:19

Sago, I think what butterandjam was saying, in a roundabout way, was that those men watching those girls were probably no more perverted than you were watching them. I don’t think there was any suggestion that you were being perverted.

I think human’s eyes are naturally attracted to beauty in all it’s forms, usually with no harm intended.

Me too, Oreo. It must be awful to recognise your ample backside on the national news. smile

I have sporty GC, GD does gymnastics, often in supermarket/local shop afterwards in just her leotard in the summer. She also has tennis lessons with the obligatory very short tennis skirt with matching skin tight Lycra short shorts beneath.

One GS is also a gymnast, again tight fitting Lycra top and shorts.

Other than that the GS’s tend to wear loose fitting shorts with tight fitting Lycra shorts underneath or skins in the colder months.

Living 10 minutes from the nearest beach, girls and women with bikini tops and micro shorts is not an unusual sight.

Sago Fri 26-Jun-26 14:15:29

Just asked my husband if he would call into a busy shop with our GD (12) in a leotard.
He gave me a look and said never in a million years.

AGAA4 Fri 26-Jun-26 14:25:04

Pervs have been around for years. Playing hockey in our knee length shorts and t shirts drew them to the railings by our school. Seen off by our fierce games mistress. This was 65 years ago.
Girls wearing skimpy shorts these days will only draw oglers just the same. Nothing has changed.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 26-Jun-26 14:31:52

I agree AGAA4 but I really do not want to live in a world where prepubescent girls and boys first consideration when choosing their clothes is will a pervert be ogling me.

Let them wear what they like and be children, they have to grow up pretty fast when entering senior school.

For what it’s worth our younger GC (9, 6 & 6) have been naked in their gardens and ours during this heat wave and on previous hot sunny days.

They are taught from a young age and in early years at school that they shouldn’t let anyone touch their privates we along with their parents and other grandparents have never made a big deal of hugs and kisses letting them (GC) initiate these.

AGAA4 Fri 26-Jun-26 15:10:20

My GD and her friends don't worry about the oglers. Just think they are sad old men. All the girls tend to wear short shorts mini dresses and show their cleavages. She is 21 now and is used to being ogled by men.
This is the way it is and always has been.

AGAA4 Fri 26-Jun-26 15:12:22

Girls and women shouldn't change the way they want to dress because of men.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 26-Jun-26 15:18:20

AGAA4

Girls and women shouldn't change the way they want to dress because of men.

Totally agree 👏👏👏

Having watched the drama Believe Me, based on John Worboys the black cab rapist when the police officers were remarking on the women’s clothing and even that one dared to wear red nail varnish I was horrified.

Attitudes really should have changed by 21st C
