Talking throughout an exercise class

I'd have told the talkers in exercise class to please stop talking so that we all hear the instructor. In a quiet polite but carrying voice .

I've done the same in cinemas and theatres , never fails.

Well done Astitchintime. We were very glad when another person in the audience at the cinema told a couple to 'Just shut up. Some of us are trying to listen!'

I thinks it’s very rude and I’d have had to say something……quite assertively!
Some years ago we were holiday in the USA when it was a nice place to visit and our health permitted the long haul flights. One particular afternoon we had a chance to see a stunt reenactment from a film involving moving vehicles, crashes, chases etc. The seating area was packed and there was a young American couple sitting directly behind us. Before the show started they were talking quite loudly, no problem with that as there was nothing going on in the display arena…..however, once the show started and the action ramped up they kept on talking even louder……so much so we couldn’t here the commentators describing the action and what the stunt team were doing.
I lost my filter at that point, turned around in my seat and pointed out that whilst they might be able to see the show any time they liked, we had paid a great deal of money and travelled a long way to visit the States and could they kindly ‘just shut up’! It worked and I got a round of applause from all the others sat in the immediate vicinity who were too damned hollow backed to say anything!

It won't be just you who is annoyed Aveline. I would have a word with the teacher.

Nobody speaks bar our yoga teacher in my class unless to her. My previous teacher was very strict and disapproved of bottles of water being brought in!
She called it Gym culture and quite unnecessary in a yoga class 🤣
None of you will be dehydrated in an hour and a half, she said.

My current teacher is more lenient. 😀

If I'd been near enough to them I'd have said something. Probably for the best that I was at the other end though as I wouldn't have been very polite! I still heard them loud and clear.

I think it's very rude.

It has the same affect on me as people talking too loudly on their phone or talking at the cinema or theatre when the production is on.

I probably am getting rattier as I get older but these things have always annoyed me simply because they are so disrespectful to other people.

No, you are not being unreasonable. I am having the same problem at the moment. I attend a line dancing class three times a week, and think it is so rude when certain people talk while the instructor is trying to teach. I would just ask them to shut up in no uncertain terms, but she is a lovely lady and so far has put up with it.

At yesterday morning's class, 2 women not only talked when she was teaching, but throughout the dances as well! If all they wanted was a chat, they should have gone to a coffee shop!

I thought it was me being touchy, but other people have commented, so it's not just me. My friend says to just screen them out, but that's easier said than done. Grrrr!

Not at all. It seems strange they had no awareness of the others behaviour and felt OK to chat. Certainly in my classes, everyone is respectful of the instructor and fellow class members, allowing them space to relax and focus. I would certainly have been tempted to say something.

Years ago, I went to a keep fit class and a colleague from work did also.

We had our mats next to each other, and yes, we chatted as we exercised.

We spoke quietly, did all the exercises thoroughly, but looking back, I wonder if others were irritated by us? Feel quite guilty when I think back.

Will add my colleague was very matey with the instructor, and hope she would have told us to ‘shut it’ if we were too annoying.

I wouldn’t do it now, as yes, I think it’s discourteous to the teacher and other participants

No, I would have been extremely annoyed by that too. It's not just rude to the instructor, but to everyone else in the class as well. Why do they think the world revolves solely around them? Surely if you are going to a class like that, you need to concentrate? Bizarre behaviour...
