A whole year of doing good

This week's guest post is by Judith O'Reilly and explains why she decided to try and do a good deed every day for an entire year. Is this something you've ever tried? Would like to try? Or are you already a paragon of virtue in any case grin

Do add your thoughts and comments on the post below. (Or indeed above if your settings puts older posts at the bottom!)

I guess the contrivance is (contrivances are) what I don't like then.

I agree that we can learn so many useful things and heritage so much fortune from spirits, you can see how a child can learn so many unbelievable and beautiful things from his parents!! Well, love the experience the writer share with us! grin

Yes a lot of it is contrived, but I thought that was the point ...

Bags Wed 13-Feb-13 19:56:46

I'm finding a lot of it rather contrived but I'll get through it because I said I would read it. There are some nice bits.

I'm enjoying the book too - yes it is easy reading and I do like the way the author considers the whys and wherefores of her do-goodery.

Some of her good deeds are a bit dodgy to my mind, though. A lot of them are things that she would normally have done in her everyday life had she not made her resolution. And some are a bit too contrived to be considered good deeds, in my book - giving the supermarket flowers to the acquaintance whose birthday it turned out to be, for instance.

Plenty of food for thought, though.

I'm up to 25 April and I will take the book on the train with me tomorrow. The entry for 25 April is my favourite so far: the one about the best gay boyfriend and the cake he didn't bring. I think its appeal is that it's completely about someone else.

Hi Judith, I'm lucky enough to have a whole month off from doing anything in particular and being anyone other than just "me" - so a perfect time to indulge in reading, which I love, and your book was in the pile I brought with me.

It was an interesting read in an easy reading sort of way, I understand why you did it; get why you felt it was important to complete the task you had set for yourself; was entertained by the day to day activities of the people in your life and your community; gritted my teeth along with you at the thought of having to get the 'Jam Jar Army' under way (I'd have thrown in the towel). Thoughtful passages where you consider the philosophies behind the need to do good deeds are included, you explore the religious approaches to good-deedery and consult with academics, I found all that interesting. It was reassuring to discover that - far from blowing your own trumpet - you are just an ordinary person who thought about doing a good deed a day for a year and what it could teach your kids, and recording it in a book. I enjoyed reading how it all panned out. I'll pass the book on to my daughter. Thanks for sending me the copy.

Am I too late for copy?

Some people have left gransnet recently so it might be one of them. It was probably an oversight. They forgot they had asked for a book perhaps or, as there are so many of us, they thought they had no chance of getting one. It is good of you to try to contact them when you are doing them the favour of giving them the book. I won't say what I really think of them as I will get into trouble. smile

Or maybe your message has gone into their junk mail and they don't check it.

I know one of the members has problems with her internet access and maybe she has been unable to receive her emails. It could be her.

judithoreilly Mon 11-Feb-13 12:02:36

I did that already and no response. Maybe she went off the idea?

Ana Fri 01-Feb-13 13:05:55

Good thinking, Moved! grin

Movedalot Fri 01-Feb-13 13:05:04

Perhaps you could email them and ask for the address?

judithoreilly Fri 01-Feb-13 12:55:17

I have a dedicated book to someone who sent me an email but without an address. Email me again with your address and I can send it out to you. Otherwise I am going to have to find someone with your name to take it off my hands...

Judith - thanks a ton for sending me the book, signed copy too! Didn't really expect to be lucky because I wasn't needing to be signed up to the challenge, so it was a lovely surprise. If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it (Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird). Looking forward to reading your book.

Book has arrived and I've started reading. Thanks, Judith.

Carigransnet (GNHQ) Thu 31-Jan-13 07:43:10

I'm enjoying - and thinking I really ought to do the same. I may need to incentivise myself with cake

Ana Mon 28-Jan-13 12:59:07

They've got it in Tesco (2 books for £7.00 offer). I might buy it.

j07 Mon 28-Jan-13 12:57:01

I won't ask for a copy. Like I say, I've got loads waiting to be read. #lesstimeonGNwouldhelp

Judith fair point about being a writer - it's what you do. So the guy who wrote about going around all the shipping forecast areas (can't think of name or title of book - got the Sundays) did exactly the same and I didn't think 'Ha ha, he only did that to get material for his book' although I knew he did. So it's the suject matter that got to me I suppose. Doing good deeds. It is obviously just my thinking then as I am a product of a calvanistic, somewhat dour, and certainly undemonstative upbringing as I really believe good deeds should not be broadcast. Not that I believe in any reward in heaven!!!

I admire you for posting back on here and wish you excellent sales for your book.

I like your challenge, Judith. If the six books have not been claimed already, I should like to take up the challenge. Email on its way.

Grannyknot Sun 27-Jan-13 17:39:08

Hi Judith, I would love a copy of your book smile will email you too ...
