WORD ASSOCIATION - 9th May 2026
The Charity Commission has now found that the charity in Tom Moore's name was mismanaged and was subject to misconduct, with his daughter and her husband personally benefitting from the operation.
So does that mean that Sir Tom obtained his knighthood under false pretences?
What a sordid mess the whole thing is.
I think the money was intended to help all the NHS workers on Covid wards, ie counselling etc. I worked for the NHS at the time but didn’t hear of anyone who benefited from this money.
I too was swept away in the "lovely old man walks around his garden for the NHS" sentiment until his whole family accompanied him to I believe it was The Bahamas, or somewhere in the Caribbean because, they said, he's always wanted to go there.
Hmm - I always thought it was an odd place to have always wanted to go to and tbh, the thought of the flight and all the aggravation that goes with long haul travel these days would put me off going, let alone someone 30 odd years older.
The book presumably, was ghost written and I would hazard a guess, very loosely based on a few interviews and embellished for sensationalism.
Was he in cahoots with the daughter? Well, we'll never know. I'm not sure at that age I would be bothered to go through all that relentless publicity and intrusion to make money. None of us live forever, when did he think he was going to spend it? Unless, I suppose, he was happy to use it as an opportunity to to increase the inheritance.

^I prefer to stick to charities I feel are well established, with a proven track record, whether supporting the NHS or any other cause.^
Frankly the way the NHS was working hard to try and kill off my family at the time, I had no desire to contribute to any fund raising for them.
Contradictory statements
No, the first para is general, the second para is specific.
When my father died 17 years ago. I made a donation to the NHS to thank them for their care of him.
During covid, some 13 years later, I wouldn't donate a brass farthing to the NHS, my family was suffering too much at their hands.
I watched a news item recently featuring an interview with Michael Ball - he released 'You'll Never Walk Alone along with Sir Tom - and Michael was very concerned about how this charity has now been sullied. What a dreadful state of affairs.
I am so glad that I donate to local charities rather than nationally promoted ones.
It was for the benefit of the hardworking staff
How did they benefit please?
I'm thinking of the Maggie Cancer charity. I know people who have felt supported by this.

how rotten that people are now saying they didn't even like him!
he raised just short of 40 million for the NHS.
His daughter and son in law are the shady ones who have done wrong
I believe a prosecution will now follow!how rotten that people are now saying they didn't even like him!

Just sheer spite, isn't it.
How much did any of them do to raise money for good causes?
Why should you have to like someone just because they raised a lot of money for the NHS?

I am also, always wary of band wagons, especially charity band wagons, and steer clear of causes and people suddenly raising large sums of money based entirely on (generally misplaced) enthusisam for a specific cause or fund raiser. I prefer to stick to charities I feel are well established, with a proven track record, whether supporting the NHS or any other cause.
I can tell you caregorically that I did not contribute 1p to the Captain Tom appeals.
Er actually I think that was part of the problem. People who expressed any concern about what was happening would have been labelled as unkind. It is a way to stop any concerns being aired.

Perhaps he didn’t write the book,
Yes, my thoughts too.

I wonder where the money went? Genuinely, at the time I couldn't understand it. Perhaps if we'd seen the Captain Tom Wing/ Ward, it might have made some sense.
The money wasn't intended to prop up the NHS and quite right too.
It was for the benefit of the hardworking staff.
I think Captain Tom Moore started this in good faith, felt he was doing his bit to help and others were inspired by him to do the same.
It's a pity that his family have tarnished his memory.
Could a 100 year old man trust his daughter ? surely not
I went out and clapped a couple of times just so I could see the neighbours and have a long distance chat and feel part of life but once or maybe twice was enough it went on weeks and got more and more straggly, a one off would have been better
Gosh seems ages ago doesn’t it ?
I don’t know if Tom was a great man or not I don’t even know if he was courageous I believe he was doing the walk round the grounds anyway but I do believe the family became greedy for money and fame and it ran away with them and I do believe they totally exploited his name or maybe he was in on it he seemed reasonably astute or maybe he truly thought he was helping and got carried away with all the adulation
I m glad he’s not here to see the mess left behind anyway
Poor grandkids
I was working through the lockdown, and hated coming home as everyone was banging their saucepans.
I think people "enjoyed" is maybe the wrong word, but appreciated the community spirit at the time.
I think the saucepan banging was started by a yoga teacher from the Netherlands!!!
Madness.
Gosh I’ve forgotten, was the whole saucepan banging thing started by Captain Tom. I thought it ok for a one-off when we were all shut off from our neighbours but we didn’t keep it up.

He didn't raise a penny for the NHS. The NHS is paid for entirely through our taxes and NI- the NHS itself didn't benefit at all.
When you make a contribution to the NHS it has to be spent on non-statutary 'extras' that benefit staff and patients.
I know the money raised was a real headache for many small hospital charities who struggled with handling such large amounts of money when they were used to scratching around running raffles for toys, TVs etc.
As for Captain Tom and his greedy, fake family I blame the media for picking up this non- story and running with it into some collective frenzy. People, desperate for hope, picked up on it too. It all got completely out of hand.
I was never comfortable with it, gave a small amount to get it out of my head and then sat back and watched the sorry shebang fall apart.
What I want to know is what have the NHS charities done with the money? Do we see any evidence of better staff/patient facilities? I would love to know the answer to this.

Perhaps he didn’t write the book,
He would have had a ghost writer in any case I would imagine. I can’t see the old buy writing or typing all that. Ghost writer could have been influenced by if it was not actually Hannah. Maybe that’s why she thought all the money from the sales was hers.
Anniebach
Perhaps he didn’t write the book,
That's a thought. You could well be right.
Scruples and honesty fly out of the window where money is concerned. Such a shame this plucky old gentleman's memory has been plundered and tarnished in this way. I think the charities that the book sales were due to benefit from are taking it further. I hope they squeeze his daughter and her husband until the pips squeak and retrieve the money for the purpose it was intended. Oh and leave them with eye-watering legal costs.
I cannot remember whether I donated or not. Nor was I banging saucepans for the NHS. They were busy trying to kill my daughter by neglect and then tried something similar with my DH. Neither had COVID, although DH was one of the people who volunteered for the COVID trials.
I expect somebody, somewhere is doing a PhD in this collective madness.
Sorry that should read I DO think he was mentally quite well
I doubt Captain Tom realised fully what was going on
I m not so sure I don’t think he was still quite well mentally and I think he was quite an astute man but we ll never know and honestly when they whipped him off to the West Indies ‘on a holiday’ I thought well that’s the end of him, heat, long journey, Covid, great combination at 100 years old
It all seemed a very ‘Alice in wonderland down the rabbit hole’ time that I felt suspicious of from quite early on and didn’t join in the adulation
We ll never know now
