Sir Tom Moore Charity: Found Seriously Mismanaged

The Charity Commission has now found that the charity in Tom Moore's name was mismanaged and was subject to misconduct, with his daughter and her husband personally benefitting from the operation.

So does that mean that Sir Tom obtained his knighthood under false pretences?

What a sordid mess the whole thing is.

We could all have walked round our gardens 100 times, or more or less according to our age and fitness . It wasn’t a very spectacular thing to do and I wouldn’t have thought knighthood-worthy in itself.

I'm sure I read somewhere that he was walking around his garden anyway as part of a rehabilitation therapy to recover from an injury/operation, and the daughter viewed it as an opportunity to exploit the nations sentiments in very difficult Covid times.

I doubt Captain Tom realised fully what was going on.

It's not necessary to like someone because of their charitable works.
I dislike very much people who seek out the limelight.
Just be quiet and do it is what I think.

Perhaps he was all sweetness and light, though, who knows?

I donated a small amount because it was for NHS charities and to my mind was doing more good than me standing outside my front door banging a saucepan.

He was the man of the moment and people got caught up in the mood. It was a miserable, anxious time for some and if he brought a little light into their world then good for him.

Like others, I didn’t take to his daughter and thought Michael Ball was just jumping on the bandwagon but the millions were adding up so I’m mightily relieved to hear that whatever fraud has occurred, the NHS hasn’t been dragged into it.

As for his sex life…..I couldn’t care less so long as it didn’t frighten the horses. 😂

Perhaps he didn’t write the book,

lemsip Thu 21-Nov-24 23:37:26

how rotten that people are now saying they didn't even like him!
he raised just short of 40 million for the NHS.

His daughter and son in law are the shady ones who have done wrong
I believe a prosecution will now follow!

MissAdventure Thu 21-Nov-24 23:27:42

So, it tuns out that nobody liked him that much... all going along with it so as not to offend people who unbeknownst to us, also didn't like him that much either.

Bad taste joke, I know, and mustn't speak ill of the dead, so he was a good walker. smile

And he raised money...it's more than I did.

Totally agree Topgunner

There must have been more of us than I thought who found the whole episode less than wonderful. I had no desire to upset those who thought he and his family were the best thing since sliced bread, so I kept my thoughts to myself and my mouth shut. I wasn't the least bit surprised to find out his daughter was what she has now been revealed to be. None of it ever sat easily with me, but I thought it was just me.

*I didn't find him lovely at all.
Still that's just me and it doesn't matter what I thought*

I totally agree I didn’t read his book but I did read a bit about his earlier life and wasn’t keen on him and I didn’t get caught up in all the adulation I felt it was all very strange and over the top He was suddenly elevated to a living saint and no Babs I didn’t get swept along at all and no I didn’t give any money to the charity I just didn’t feel comfortable from day 1 but everyone thought it was fantastic so I didn’t say a lot

I agree with you. I didn’t think he was a sweet little old man, particularly as in his book he moaned about his wife not liking sex.

Yuck.

Lovetopaint037 Thu 21-Nov-24 22:16:25

Golly Foghorn that is surprising! Haven’t t read the book and can’t believe that a very old man of his generation would be ready to be so open about his personal life. Wonder if someone else planted that in like so many modern biographies who seem to believe sex sells.

Michael Ball is conspicuous by his silence.

not his fault is it!!

Nope! Didn’t say it was.

MissAdventure Thu 21-Nov-24 20:19:42

I feel the same.
Of course, we'd need someone to inform the press about our walking...

Babs03 Thu 21-Nov-24 20:19:35

Yes was a weird time during lockdown, I think we all became susceptible to emotionally charged stories like that of Captain Tom. We got swept along with it. But I didn't like the way the daughter seemed to be orchestrating everything from the get-go.
Another story of greed overtaking a sense of public duty. I just wonder that she didn't fear being found out because obviously now she has been disgraced and probably can't show her face wherever it is she lives.

No it doesn't matter. He raised millions for the NHS, personally I would like to know how that was spent. Wisely or not, will we ever know. His efforts are in no way to be demeaned.

Sir Tom got his knighthood for walking, he done the hard work!

I don’t think so. What is being suggested, I think, is that the daughter is misusing the funds raised for charity on herself and family.
Curiously, when it was all happening during COVID, I had a bad feeling about the publicity and all that, that the daughter was plugging. My gut seems to be right.

I felt the same, had misgivings about it from the get go.

mumofmadboys Thu 21-Nov-24 18:51:51

I wonder if Hannah and her sister are still on speaking terms.

I really hope she has the blooming book thrown at her.
Despicable.

25Avalon Thu 21-Nov-24 17:48:54

I’ve just read she got paid £18,000 to open a youth club in Bristol. Tom’s charitable foundation received £2,000 and she kept the rest. The Foundation would like to see her brought to book.

Ramblingrose22 Thu 21-Nov-24 14:55:12

I hope the daughter can be sued for embezzlement, though I'm not sure who'd do the suing. Perhaps GermanShepherdsMum would know?

When she was interviewed a while back she protested her innocence and appeared outraged that anyone could think she had misused the funds.

People are so easily fooled at the beginning for all the best of reasons and that is what the con artists take advantage of.
