It has been my experience that most grans are in their 40's or 50's these days.....hardly old, so what's with the logo?

Nathalie Mon 25-Jul-11 07:47:18

I'm 62, I was a granny at 38 and a great granny at 59, which is great. Isn't the point to work on the stigma of being old rather than to pretend you're not?

I have been a granny for 23 years; was 57 when the first was born and three years ago became a great-granny. At 80 I am enjoying my new life after having moved to a flat from a four bedroomed house with attics and a cellar. I am still bsuy sizing-down. Now living near my children and grand -children I am can get more involved in their lives. The next event is to go to the theatre to see the annual dancing display which my three grand-daughters are thaking part in. I now live in a community of retired people; We have own lease-hold flats and are very independant but our ages range from the 50s to about 95. Yes, many of us do remember the war years but I agree that perhaps the logo should represent a more general picture of grandparents. But we are all different with a wide range of experiences and you cannot please all the people all the time.

I'm 62, had my son at 31 and became a grandmother for the first time a few days before I turned 61. I too hate the logo - definitely something from Russia or China! I certainly don't feel old at 62 and get really annoyed when people talk about elderly people and mean people in their 60s.angry

Twobabes Fri 24-Jun-11 13:41:05

Had my first at 30, daughter had her first at 32 and now I'm 64.
Most of my friends are in same situation, having first g c in their 60s, and one is in her 70s. She's the liveliest of the lot of us, no stopping her and life's a riot when she's aroundsmile

My sentiments exactly, toothfairy. I was a young-ish granny nineteen years ago!

toothfairy Thu 23-Jun-11 17:42:25

OMG,i'm old enough to be most of your mothers.Must try harder to keep up with you wippersnappers hmm

GoldenGran Thu 23-Jun-11 11:15:08

I am 64, had my daughter when I was 20, and therefore could have been a Granny in my forties. However I was 58 when my first Grandchild was born, and though the knees creak and I sometimes have "grannyback", it is keeping me on my toes and determined to keep fit and healthy.

Littlelegs Wed 22-Jun-11 20:56:52

sorry about the typo grandchild not as above wink

Littlelegs Wed 22-Jun-11 20:55:49

I'm 58 my first chandchild was born when I was 45.

As with twinklepickers I do feel my age .. but the wizened faced painting is in the cupboard under the stairsgrin

Joanna Lumley, Lulu just two of very many would be more appealing holding the banner on the logo for grans of today

glassortwo Wed 22-Jun-11 16:38:25

greenmossgiel Wed 22-Jun-11 16:26:06

I'm 61. I have 3 grown-up children, and 3 grand-daughters (21, 20 and 11). Also a wee great-grandson. I was made a grandmother for the first time at 42. (I had my first child when I was 16 - shocksmile!)

baggythecrust! Wed 22-Jun-11 16:19:32

My mum became a gran at 50. She's now 82 and has fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I provided the first grandchild and the last (an achievement I'm proud of) and my daughter provided the first greatGC.

Has anyone on here more than fourteen GCn, I wonder?

numberplease Wed 22-Jun-11 16:10:48

I`m 68, 5 grown up children and 7 grandchildren, but I was only 49 when I first became a grandma.

borstalgran Wed 22-Jun-11 16:03:50

I am 62, go to the gym, including spin classes, volunteer, tweet and do Facebook. I am sick of being patronised by all including NHS. I am not old. I will be, I know, but we are a different generation from our parents. So sod off, you patronisers and that includes the git who threw water over me from his van window as I peddled up hill.

Soupy Mon 06-Jun-11 19:42:51

I'm 57 with 2 children but no grandchildren as yet.

I'm on here and Mumsnet but hadn't noticed the logo for either until it was mentioned - think this one is ghastly!

Libradi Mon 06-Jun-11 08:49:15

I'm 53, my granddaughter will be 5 in August and one more on the way in November.

Love this site but please change the logo and the colours Gransnet, so 'Old Fashioned'. Lets have something bright and cheerful!

goldengirl Sun 29-May-11 22:27:19

I'm 62 but feel so much younger until (1) I see my reflection in a shop window and (2) have to get up from the floor after building a train track.

Re: the logo. Would bright, interesting text reading 'Gransnet' be simpler and more suitable than a 'grandparent' pictorial image?

I must admit I hadn't noticed it until it was mentioned!

hennothefirst Sun 29-May-11 19:00:03

PS hi Trixie, glad I'm not the odd one out AGAIN!! wink

hennothefirst Sun 29-May-11 18:56:03

I'm young enough not to have known that the logo was a land army type image. I thought it was kinda odd but so is a lot of stuff nowadays, especially logos. I also thought those women on it looked rather fine and vigorous. In short, it doesn't bother me at all.

trixie Sun 29-May-11 18:29:02

Actually, er, I really like the logo.
Bit Soviet in style but shows women as powerful leaders, who can campaign while also nurturing a baby. They look like grown-ups.
Such a refreshing change from some of these child-like waifs who pass for women in the press these days. All those knock-kneed poses, big hair and kiddie-voices, yuk!

Annobel Wed 25-May-11 12:01:40

When I was a mere youngster of about 57, my grand-daughter, aged 7, asked, 'What did you do in the war Granny?' Well, I was a toddler for most of it and can only vaguely remember landgirls walking up the road to the local farm. So yes, I agree with the rest of you. Scrap the logo. Give us the sixties rather than the forties - apologies to any great-grandparents who may be reading this, tho my best friend is now a great-grandma at 72.
