A sharp hatpin perhaps? Or a rat?

There are many hymns that I find uplifting, but one tops the lot - not sure it's classed as a hymn, but the Allelulia chorus from Handels Messiah is my favourite. I just wish I could reach those very top notes!

Definately a good non comformist one. The Welsh do it best but I can't claim I am welsh. Even as a lapsed non conformist I can't resist a rousing hymn with a good chorus.

This one has me in tears!

They need to be sung by a big choir and at "Chapel speed". Church and cathedral choirs sing some hymns too slowly and have too pure a sound for hymns that were designed for a whole congregation to sing and enjoy.

AlisonMA That's very sweet! My brother used to sing 'Once in royal David's Sooty stole a candle shed' What was he thinking!!
And Dad when little ( he lived in the Middle East so it made more sense!) misheard victory and sang 'From fig tree unto fig tree'

AlisonMA Thu 03-May-12 12:19:13

nonu that is my husband's favourite, makes him go all gooey. Jeni love that one too, my son used to think it was 'sing Susanna' because that was one of his friends.

I love this song too and sing it with the DGC so will probable put this on funeral list from me to them!

nanaej Thu 03-May-12 08:59:57

Imagine is a great song for all humanists..it's on my funeral list and DHs too!

whenim64 Thu 03-May-12 08:23:05

Imagine is a beautiful song, and I would have it played at my funeral, too smile

Joan Thu 03-May-12 08:10:17

Well, they are hymns of a sort:

John Lennon's 'Imagine'

and
The Internationale.

I'll have 'Imagine' played at my funeral.

In more typical hymns, I like 'Gaudeamus Igitur' when played at a graduation.

Mamardoit We had Love Divine and Praise my Soul the King of Heaven at our wedding, also Oh Perfect Love. On reflection I don't like any of them. I must admit to not having heard the version with the Welsh music. Both DH and I are half Welsh.

Ask your DS and fiancee what they remember from Primary school. We've found that those hymns have stuck in people's heads and are therefore familiar. "One more step* is very suitable and has such a good tune that people pick it up fast. jeni's suggestion is very good too!!

jeni Wed 02-May-12 18:10:06

Sing hosanna!

AlisonMA Wed 02-May-12 17:26:08

Oh you all choose such lovely hymns. My favourite is hymn 59 from my school hymnbook, There is a Green Hill Far Away. I've asked for it at my funeral.

I also agree with those who like Make me a Channel of Your Peace, Oh Jesus I have promised and Bind us together Lord.

I have to help son and fiancee choose for their wedding but must take into consideration that there won't be a choir and only about 60 people so it needs to be something a lot of people will know. How do you think it would go down if we sent a link to YouTube and asked people to learn it beforehand!!!??

eGJ Wed 02-May-12 17:08:29

Blaenwern mamardoit!

Mamardoit Wed 02-May-12 16:04:46

Love Divine with the Welsh music.....I can't spell it!
Praise My Soul the King of Heaven.
Now Thank We All Our God.
