Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings. Choral.

I find this the most stunning piece of music.

There are some beautiful pictures on this video of the Handel coronation one.

Kings really looked liked kings back in history, didn't they?

Granny-a that is beautiful. So sad.

Glad to see you back. Hope you pick up soon. smile

Baggy oh yes! God save the king! And green, yes we used to sing that on remembrance Sunday . I always had difficulty with the last line
And we shall meet again!

bagitha Tue 07-Feb-12 16:44:55

Yes, you got the right one, duppy. It is BWV 78. Now all we need for the proper sound is a boys' choir and the accompaniment on a harpsichord. ;-)

bagitha Tue 07-Feb-12 16:35:08

The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is ended is the one I mean, mishap. I know the other one too, now you're reminded me. Memory just needed a JOG.

greenmossgiel Tue 07-Feb-12 16:34:28

Sibelius - 'Be Still My Soul'. I chose this for my dad's funeral and although I'm not a religious person, I find that stirring hymns do something for me.

bagitha Tue 07-Feb-12 16:34:05

Oh, yes, mishap! Thank you for reminding me about that one. I love that tune.

Zadok the Priest, anyone? Hey, I think that might be one of Gally's faves. Hugs, gally. I'll play it for you while I'm washing-up tonight. xxx

glassortwo Tue 07-Feb-12 16:22:12

I love that, I had not heard it before grannya

grannyactivist Tue 07-Feb-12 16:13:04

Not my favourite hymn, but it always moves me to tears when my husband sings it as a solo. It's such a beautifully crafted story, combining powerful lyrics with a delightful melody.

Jerusalem is another favourite of mine, I hated school, but loved this as our school song.
And I agree about The Day Thou Gavest, it was my grandma`s favourite hymn.

jeni Tue 07-Feb-12 15:07:16

Allellujah everybody sing hosanna

granto7 Tue 07-Feb-12 14:49:10

Thankyou all so much, especially Whatis, I have loved watching the links . Yes gs did think bind us together Lord was find us together LordsmileYes Ariadne I meant How Great thou Art....We had an enormous hymn book up in the hall at school and all the words were easy to see,so there was no excuse then for getting the words wrong.

whatisamashedupphrase Tue 07-Feb-12 14:38:33

This one could be yours Baggy. Different number though. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujLK28Nlmq4

Gracesmum, that's just what I think. Lovely words, beautiful tunes. Shame to let them go.

Mishap Tue 07-Feb-12 14:37:58

I am agnostic and a singer and have to say that the church has nicked all the best music!

The Day Thou Gavest is a gem. As is Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.

jeni Tue 07-Feb-12 14:34:43

Driving me crazy. A hymn I used to know and love but can't remember. It was a Jewish hymn written in the minor key. Not shalom. Something about alle.uja and the lord I think. Any suggestions?

gracesmum Tue 07-Feb-12 14:31:19

It has just occurred to me that we all know lots of hymns whether or not we are church-goers - and we know enough to have favoutites. How many children today will even know any hymns to have an opinion? Schools don't "do" religion, churches often do "songs" (most of which I find depressing and BORING) - so how will the next generation learn? Religion/praise aside, so mnay hymns have provided words and phrses which are part of our language - take away the hymn and many of these lose theri significance.

Are we as well as our idiom all going to be impoverished as a consquence?

whatisamashedupphrase Tue 07-Feb-12 14:26:34

My singing is strictly between me and my computer jeni.

But they've got a choir on here somewhere.

jeni Tue 07-Feb-12 14:25:06

Maybe we could get together? Is that technically feasible? Skype?it would be fun if we could. I miss having a good old sing.

whatisamashedupphrase Tue 07-Feb-12 14:25:06

Is this one a bit quicker jeni? www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3iB30gCqAc

I'm working on yours Baggy (wipes sweat from brow)
