Being brought up Methodist, my favourite is "And can it be.."

Both my Father and I are tone deaf but loved competing loudly and out of tune in the refrain smile and I know all the words by heart

As for today's young, my 12 year old would not know where to start with even the National Anthem or the Lord's Prayer, but knows all the top 20 hits. I'm sure we knew the latest hits as well as all the classics having them drummed into us at daily school assembly as well as church.

Shame some of these links don't work any more. I wonder why not.

Gorki Thu 18-Jul-13 22:30:34

Love that one !

I've just been going over some of these, and I clicked on this one.

you cannot resist belting this out grin

"How great thou art is my favourite hymn."
I know my mothers favourite was"O Jesus I have promised".
My granddaughter attended a special school and the children always sang "One more step along the road I go" which was very moving

A friend of mine wanted "Fight the good fight " at his wedding because he remembered singing it at school. He was persuaded that it was not appropriate though secretly he though it might be ! He does have a good sense of humour. grin

Atqui my sister in law had Dear Lord and Father of Mankind at her wedding. But it did tickle me a bit as it goes on, "Forgive Our Foolish Ways"!

Lovely hymn though. One of my favourites.

iam64 whilst singing as a church congregation may be happening less, I'm sure that singing is very popular now. There are many new community and rock choirs springing up all over the country. To misquote ' the Church' doesn't have all the best tunes'.

Atqui Thu 18-Jul-13 09:23:31

I wanted dear lord and father of mankind at my wedding , but was told it was for funerals, so I've bagged it for that!

That's an interesting point PRINTMISS. They have very busy lives, but there must be some songs in their little heads. smile

PRINTMISS Thu 18-Jul-13 07:21:56

I wonder what songs our grand-children will remember being sung to them?

annodomini Wed 17-Jul-13 19:56:16

That takes me back, J0. My granny used to play 'Now the day is over' on her rather out of tune piano and sing along.

mrsmopp Wed 17-Jul-13 19:01:19

As soon as I hit send I remembered,
Take my little light round the world,
I'm gonna let it shine!

Lovely songs of innocence......

j08 Wed 17-Jul-13 18:53:49

I love Now The Day is over. I used to sing it sitting up in bed on light nights when I couldn't get to sleep. I got the words from the song book I stole out of the Sunday School cupboard. smile

mrsmopp Wed 17-Jul-13 18:48:54

As children we sang There's a friend for little children
Above the bright blue sky.....

Another was: Daisies are our silver, Buttercups our gold...

And: Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

At the end of school we sang, Now the day is over, Night is drawing nigh...

Any more from your own infancy? Lovely memories, these!

Oh! yes, Iam64, We plough the fields and scatter, sung by 7-11 year olds at Harvest Festival, what a joy. Children's voices singing at assembly were a great start to my day. Society is indeed missing the communal singing and praising as church attendance drops. Not a devout Christian, or regular church goer, but get there when I can and always enjoy the old 'songs of praise' when I do. I also like the Gospel Singers "Hallelula" singing.

Iam64 Wed 17-Jul-13 08:50:08

wonderful thread. I love Jerusalem, Oh Lord and Father of Mankind, We Plough the Fields and Scatter and The King of Love my Shepherd is - and so many others. I do feel as a society we're missing a lot of joy that comes with singing together, as church attendance drops

MiceElf Wed 17-Jul-13 08:47:10

For a wonderful melody and lots of parts

Oh for a thousand tongues to sing

janeainsworth Wed 17-Jul-13 08:33:23

Yes, I love that one Printmiss.
It was sung at my cousin's funeral.
My favourite at school was 'Hills of the North Rejoice'. It used to conjure up lovely pictures in my mind - 'isles of the southern seas, deep in your coral caves' etc

PRINTMISS Wed 17-Jul-13 08:26:21

Not sure if tis has been mentioned - too long to look through them all! So, how about "Oh love that will not let me go"?

laidback Tue 16-Jul-13 20:23:07

I like 'Walk with me' and 'I watch the sunrise' ...still remember the words to those.smile

Nelliemoser Tue 16-Jul-13 19:45:31

Oh! if we are talking on stuff apart from hymns, try this final number from Faure requiem In paradisium. It has me tingling. Almost no Alto parts though.
