Definitely not good.

Although the mention of sado masochism does bring to mind the old joke.

A sadist and a masochist met up for consensual sex. They made the preparations that they deemed necessary for a mutually fulfiling experience. The masochist said "I'm ready, hit me" The sadist replied "No".

How horrible, absent. When I was a student, I don't think I knew about S&M practices. Luckily our residences were not mixed in those days. My mind boggles at the very thought of such goings on in our very strait laced accommodation!

When I was a student I briefly lived next door to a masochist in a hall of residence. I couldn't cope with the sounds of screams and whips that I heard through the walls and had to move. Yes, it was consenting adults – not coercive – but to me it seemed like a perversion of sexual activity that I saw and still see as a physical and joyous expression of love and intimacy – so, fundamentally, pornographic and perverse. Incidentally, I had nightmares for weeks afterwards.

Yes, after working with young adults in a home for youngsters with problems ( as opposed to "problem children" !! ) I know the phrase you cannot unknow what you know. Sometimes I wish I could! As I'm sure do some of you. sad

Indeed Ariadne.

Ariadne Sun 04-Mar-12 10:34:03

When I worked for Relate as a counsellor, I learned more about sexual practices, in my training, than I had ever imagined. And, as you say, you cannot unlearn all that, but neither are able to discuss some of it in everyday life. It's just there..

Butternut Sun 04-Mar-12 07:26:17

I know exactly what you mean carol and ga regarding you can't unknow what you know. I was very clear to get this point across when involved in training counsellors for ascsa.

Carol Sun 04-Mar-12 06:49:01

I was talking about consenting adult practices Greatnan. Some of them are unimaginable.

Greatnan Sun 04-Mar-12 01:49:03

I said I would find acts that involved coercion or force repellant and that obviously includes child sex abuse.

grannyactivist Sat 03-Mar-12 23:22:47

Yep! I too was very fortunate in my counselling supervision and also was privileged to have training with some of the finest practitioners from the UK and America. What you said about never being able to 'unknow' what you've seen and heard was something we were all acutely aware of. At times I used to look around when I was with a group friends on an evening out and feel as if I was from an alien planet, because the things that I'd dealt with during the day were so extreme. Funnily, because I'm a Christian (and was a Sunday School teacher at the time) some of my friends/relatives would treat me as if I had never heard a swear word and talk about sex in my presence as if the very word would spook me. At the time I was counselling adult survivor's of childhood sexual abuse, some of whom were streetworkers - ironic or what!

Carol Sat 03-Mar-12 22:35:45

Oh dear ga this work really does take its toll on people. We always had good supervision with a forensic psychologist who taught me and my team several effective techniques from different disciplines. Once you know, you can't unknow, and most people should never be exposed to this sort of information. I think many people regard themselves as unshockable and they have a very wide threshold, but the devious and nasty practices that a few strange people resort to for sexual gratification reflect very disturbed minds. It doesn't just sicken some people - it can inappropriately render them sexually aroused because brains try to rationalise what they are witnessing into something consensual and loving and before you know it they are thinking that they must be disturbed to get aroused by such strange behaviour. It's a tricky area of work!

grannyactivist Sat 03-Mar-12 22:25:44

Carol I'm with you on this one. I had to do something similar when I was cascading some training on sex and sexuality a few years ago. My supervisor's line manager (a 'spinster' of a certain age and demeanour) asked to sit-in and was politely advised (by my boss) that she might find the subject matter difficult; not deterred she duly arrived and took her seat. I began the training session with one eye on her to check that she was coping and if I hadn't felt so sorry for her it might have been hilarious. She got hot, went pink, began to sweat, went pale - and at the point we took our first short break she made a dash for the toilets - where she was heard throwing up, and sensibly didn't return. shock

This old definitely not racy beldame is going to bed! Sans sex toys, sans sex furniture, sans everything except a mug of milk.
Night all!

Carol Sat 03-Mar-12 21:09:46

Greatnan there a few sexual acts that would make your hair curl, even if they don't involve coercion. I had the happy task of compiling a glossary of such behaviours for a treatment manual for sex offenders. I also had to type it up, as the admin person who started typing it, despite being prepped and bravely refusing support, threw up in her waste bin and went home sick. There certainly are some odd people in this world, and I would challenge you to not find repellant acts that I couldn't or wouldn't write on here.

Zephrine Sat 03-Mar-12 20:46:40

Do we have an emoticon for jaw dropping open and hitting the floor?

jeni Sat 03-Mar-12 20:38:10

Did you see the Louisiana lounger? smile

yogagran Sat 03-Mar-12 20:31:05

I've just Googled sex furniture and educated myself. Just a teeny bit worried now as I recently bought a bed wedge from Amazon to prop my DH up when he gets a cough and they're probably thinking . . . . . .
on the other hand it could have a dual purpose - especially after receiving the free samples yesterday

jeni Sat 03-Mar-12 20:27:25

The beast with two humps!

Greatnan Sat 03-Mar-12 20:14:17

I wonder how different people interpret the word 'pornography'? For me, the only sexual acts I find repellant are those which involve coercion or force.
Having taught 'personal relationships' to teenagers, I don't think anything could shock me now.
However, I find watching other people's sexual activities, or reading about them, profoundly boring. Or ridiculous, especially the back view of a rutting male.

jeni Sat 03-Mar-12 19:42:18

Mine doesntJ,

Zephrine Sat 03-Mar-12 19:08:09

I don't think so and you do have to make sure they are switched off or things might get hotter than intended!

em Sat 03-Mar-12 19:04:44

What about Victoria Wood's suggestion.......' bend me over backward on the hostess trolley' ? Do those things have brakes?

Zephrine Sat 03-Mar-12 18:55:47

I wonder if Susie Godson is reading this?

jeni Sat 03-Mar-12 18:46:59

Don't ask! You don't want to knowgrin
