Always fascinating to know what people are reading and what they are making of it. I am deep in the Herries Chronicles by Hugh Walpole. A wonderful sweeping panoramic look at English history through the prism of a family from the Lakes. Highly recommended

just finished ''Lady Almina and the real Downton Abbey'' by the Countess of Carnarvon. Wonderful!

Am now reading another Elizabeth Haynes book Human Remains. I`ll finish it, because I`ve paid for it, but won`t be buying any more of her books, the subject matter, and the characters, are slightly distasteful to me, but maybe it`s just me being a bit finickey.

Just started 'Brighton Rock,' by Graham Greene.

Just finished Four Seasons North by Billie Wright. About to start reading You Can't Read This Book by Nick Cohen.

Finished Human Remains, it improved slightly, but I wasn`t over enamoured of it. Am now reading The Visitor, one of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child, not been reading them in the right order, but it doesn`t really matter.

Decided to read Nick Cohen in snatches at the kitchen table (I generally have a book propped open there so I can read during the pauses of other activities. But my ptoper sitting down reading is Nell Freudenberger's The Newly Weds, for which Thank You Gransnet.

Finished The Newlyweds, which I quite enjoyed. On the go I have Margaret Atwood's The Penelopeaid and also Twelth Night, in preparation for a visit to the theatre on Saturday night. I always like to re-read Shakespeare before seeing the play and I invariable find something new or something I hadn't noticed before.

I have got hooked on the Kate Shugak detective stories by Dana Stabenow. They're set in Alaska with a native Alaskan heroine, slightly ambivalent about her ties to the Aleut community. They should be read in order. I made the mistake of reading one of the later books first, so know about certain developments that haven't emerged in the earlier books I'm now reading - currently 'Blood Will Tell'.

I've just started the first Kate Shugak book,A Cold Day For Murder. I got it as a free kindle ebook.I'm really enjoying the book but struggling with the whole kindle thng at the moment. I'd far rather have a real book.

I like the sound of those Kate Shugak books, will look out for them.

annodomini Wed 01-May-13 17:27:19

I was thinking about you number. They seem to be right up your street!

Anno, I`ll be book buying again soon on Amazon, so will look for some on there. Thank you for the tip.

Feel really bereft, have just finished Kate Atkinson's Life after Life, absolutely loved it, for me it was far better than her Jackson Brodie books, and was on a par with her first novel Behind the scenes at the Museum. I'm going to start The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry next as I have heard that it is also a very good book hope that it will live up to my last one.

Anno, I`ve ordered the first Kate Shugak book, if I like it, then I`ll order more. Aren`t there a lot?
Lee Childs` The Visitor was great, Jack Reacher stories usually are, am now reading another, Without Fail, enjoying it so far.

A book about the earthquake in Haiti - linked to the story of Toussaint L'Ouverture, the first black General for Napoleon, in charge of the Island- who later started the independence movement there and the abolition of slavery. Napoleon imprisoned him and brought him to the Chateau de Joux, very close to us, in France- where he died of cold and pneumonia a year later. Many Haitian and Domenicans, and descendants of ex slaves from all over the world visit regularly. Fascinating.

Without fail was, as expected, very enjoyable. Am now just starting on The 11th Hour, by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro, another in the Women`s Murder Club series.

Ian42 Fri 10-May-13 12:59:01

Just started 'The Fall and Rise of Gordon Coppinger,' by David Nobbs.

whenim64 Fri 10-May-13 13:01:43

I've decided to re-read To Kill A Mocking Bird, as it's years since I first read it.

Ariadne Fri 10-May-13 13:08:34

I've just finished "Gone Girl" and thoroughly enjoyed it. So clever!

leslies Fri 10-May-13 14:34:55

I read Gone Girl a few weeks ago - after a disappointing start it turned out to be a really good page turner! Currently reading the second book in the Song of Fire and Ice. I enjoyed the first book Game of Thrones but you do have to concentrate hard because of the numerous characters.

matson Fri 10-May-13 15:06:40

just finished " the storyteller " by Jodi picoult, enjoyed it. now reading one from charity shop "breathing lessons " by anne tyler, good so far. x

11th Hour was very good, just starting on V for Vengeance, by Sue Grafton. I`ve read all the others, from A onwards, am wondering what will happen to her detective, Kinsey Milhone, when she gets to Z?

Nonu Fri 10-May-13 17:39:33

Number , how strange , I have just finished that , won"t tell you what happens . I like her style of writing , the twiddley bits , and the way she adds little asides as if she is talking to you face to face .

Do read Michael Connelly ??

Ariadne Fri 10-May-13 19:49:49

matson Glad you like Anne Tyler; she has written some thought provoking novels.

numberplease Fri 10-May-13 23:38:52

Yes Nonu, I`ve read quite a lot of Michael Connelly`s books, I picture Harry Bosch as looking rather like Ray Winstone, would you agree?
