Always fascinating to know what people are reading and what they are making of it. I am deep in the Herries Chronicles by Hugh Walpole. A wonderful sweeping panoramic look at English history through the prism of a family from the Lakes. Highly recommended

Mad About You by Sinead Moriarty. About an Irish family re-locating to London. Very nice relaxing read.

Anno, I like the Sue Grafton alphabet books as well, I`ve also been wondering what happens after Z?
I`ve just started Whiskey Beach, by Nora Roberts, a new author to me, it`s alright, so far.

Having finished The Deaths, I'm indulging in something lighter: Sue Grafton's W is for Wasted. I've always enjoyed her alphabetical crime novels. They seem to have become more involved as she reaches the end of the alphabet. I wonder what she will do after Z is for....

Still making my way through Ulysses, plus - ahem - Alice au pays de merveilles - I have both on my new Kindle (the old one is still fine except that it won't talk to my router (after I dropped it).

Just into the first few chapters of 'In Plain Sight - the life and lies of Jimmy Savile.' I only ordered it yesterday. It's not full of graphic abuse detail (I ordered it when I read that those details were not in there) but paints a vivid portrait òf the man from many sources. Quite a hefty book. Already seeing the stories of violence, conning, lying and deception, lack of fatherly affection, isolation when hospitalised, abuse by an older woman, being sent to talk to elderly dying, grandiose displays and cravings for power/money - interesting reading! Quite a few comparisons with what I've read of Max Clifford.

I'm reading, Dominion, by C.J. Sansom.

When, you might like The Little Café in Kabul, but can`t remember the author. I`ve just started on The Guilty One, a first book by Lisa Ballantyne, seems OK so far.

The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twang Eng. I read it in one sitting! A beautifully written book which reduced me to tears. I will now read it again at a slower pace with a replacement box of tissues to hand!

I loved 'And The The Mountains Echoed' and enjoyed his other books, too. I've been searching for more books in that same genre.

At the moment, I'm just coming to the bed of 'The Wrong Boy' by Willy Russell. It's poignant and funny, but I haven't found it unputdownable. I think it's because it's such a busy book, with lots of meandering off for more stories. Each time I've picked it up, I've had to recap because I couldn't remember where the boy was up to.

Next, I'm going to read Vanessa Redgrave's autobiography, sparked off by a reference on Gransnet to 'Vanessa's loonies' and the Workers' Revolutionary Party. That book's been on an unread pile for quite some time.

Same here; A Thousand Splendid Suns is the better of the books imo.

Anno, I`ve just finished And the Mountains Echoed, I liked it a lot, but my favourite book of his is still A Thousand Splendid Suns. With this book there was rather a lot of going backwards and forwards in time, slightly confusing sometimes.

I am now reading 'And the Mountains Echoed' by Khaled Hosseini and although it's very involved, I'm enjoying it thoroughly. We're reading it for our book group a week on Wednesday.

We were on holiday in Cornwall when John Betjeman was buried at 'the church in the sand' at Daymer Bay.

feetlebaum Sun 13-Jul-14 22:33:03

A N Wilson's biography of John Betjeman, and I'm still dipping into Ulysses with great enjoyment.

I`m reading The Critic, by Peter May, the second of the Enzo Macleod series, but must admit to preferring the Lewis Trilogy.

I'm reading Magician, by Raymond E Feist.

A Cab at the Door. That's a blast from the past. Loved that book but have to admit that I can't remember anything about it.

I am reading A Cab at the Door, by V.S. Pritchett.

I finished Cat Among the Pigeons, I found it to be an intriguing read, and didn't know who the killer was until it was revealed. I found it to be an acceptable and believable story from start to finish. I hate SPOILERS so I will not reveal anything here about who was the killer.
