Always fascinating to know what people are reading and what they are making of it. I am deep in the Herries Chronicles by Hugh Walpole. A wonderful sweeping panoramic look at English history through the prism of a family from the Lakes. Highly recommended

I`ve just finished The Little Coffee Shop in Kabul, by Deborah Rodriguez. I loved it, gives a great insight as to how women in Afghanistan are still treated, even in this day and age. Am now reading Birdman, by Mo Hayder.

I finished Cat Among the Pigeons, I found it to be an intriguing read, and didn't know who the killer was until it was revealed. I found it to be an acceptable and believable story from start to finish. I hate SPOILERS so I will not reveal anything here about who was the killer.

Burial Rites, I'm about 2/3rds through very bleak but a compulsive read. I'm keeping away from the thread about this book as I don't want any clues as to the ending.

Just starting A Spy Among Friends by Ben Macintyre about Kim Philby. I am fascinated by the idea of that group who rose so high in our secret service but were actually Russian spies. What drives someone to betray their own country? I'm sure people must have suspected them but it was too incredible to believe.

Just after the pool and in the changing room - completely deaf so he can't hear what anyone says, no glasses so he can't read the number on his armband to find his locker, glasses and hearing aid....
Brilliant writing. grin

Gally Thu 27-Mar-14 17:18:13

Deaf Sentence is brilliant. The bit in the pool at Center Parcs makes me laugh until I cry.

Oooh Soutra, will have to try those. I love a new detective novel; I spent a fortune on the Simon Serraillier series. I do find the book threads on Mumsnet a good source of ideas.
So tempting to download for the Kindle on a whim here in France.

I`m presently reading Dark Hollow by John Connelly, one of his earlier Charlie Parker stories. Waiting for me after this is The Book Thief, by Marcus Zusak. I`ve been told that the film is wonderful, but will stick to reading the book, so many good books are ruined when turned into films.

Bez Wed 26-Mar-14 14:39:19

I am reading ' The Girl Who Fell From the Sky' wartime story of a young woman who we parachuted into France to assist the Resistance. Very good so far.

Mamie Wed 26-Mar-14 14:28:10

I have just finished Longbourn, which is Pride and Prejudice from the servants' viewpoint. Very enjoyable. Am now reading Kate Atkinson's Life After Life.

feetlebaum Wed 26-Mar-14 12:55:57

With dictionary close at hand I am enjoying Georges Simenon's "Maigret et le corps sans tete". Every few years I get an urge to do this... The books starts with a canal barge getting a fouled propellor, that turns out to be a man's arm wrapped in newspaper... usually males are found in one piece, whereas females get chopped up...

I liked Children of the Revolution, although it took a while to get the reason for the title. I`m just coming towards the end of a book of short stories by Peter Robinson, called The Price of Love. They`ve been a little different to his usual offerings, but enjoyable nevertheless. My next book will be my GN present, Burial Rites.
