In the on-line edition today, they print pictures of semi-naked women which are obviously meant to titillate. They are such hypocrites. I do have to smile when they print one of their 'Aren't these pictures disgusting' rants as an excuse for giving them maximum publicity.
Of course their speciality is blaming the poor, especially single mothers, for all the ills of society.

Hello Petallus,

Blimey that sounds much more enticing. I'm off now with my D.M., as I don't think I will be very busy.

Anagram Thu 12-Apr-12 12:58:27

Spare Rib was good. (I got my name in there for campaigning to use Ms.)

But the name bothered people - I asked for it in a Dundee stationers and was asked 'Is that a knitting magazine?'.......

He/she was certainly correct in 17c with the "madam' being called an abbess!

petallus Wed 11-Apr-12 19:46:59

Hello POGS, I've been meaning to mention the nunnery. A know-all learned friend of mine assures me that in Shakespeare's day 'nunnery' was a euphemism for house of ill repute (so Hamlet was telling Ophelia she was no better than she should be and belonged in a brothel).

So it wouldn't be boring but I'm sorry I told you to get thee there. Don't go! smile

Carol Wed 11-Apr-12 19:44:02

You can get most of the 'I' online for free Gmajen.

petallus Wed 11-Apr-12 19:42:07

I used to read Spare Rib years ago. I trusted that but don't suppose it is around any more.

Gmajen Wed 11-Apr-12 19:37:26

Wow -sisters, do none of you read the I ? At 20p it is a great little tabloid which filled a big gap in the market for a small intelligent inexpensive daily paper.

POGS Wed 11-Apr-12 18:41:07

Thanks lymnaea, I probably do!. Having said that neither would float my boat.

lymnaea Wed 11-Apr-12 18:26:02

umm POGS do you mean North Korea?

jeni Wed 11-Apr-12 18:22:50

Anagram Wed 11-Apr-12 18:16:39

Keeping fit is good for you, jeni! (Sorry Greatnan blush)

jeni Wed 11-Apr-12 18:14:40

I have liked PE on the few times I've tried it!

POGS Wed 11-Apr-12 18:06:43

Hello Petallus. I tried the nunnery, very boring I would rather be talking to you. Hope you feel the same even if we do disagree on some issues.

I must say I find all the comments refreshing, to have the diversity of opinions shows exactly why we all read different papers. Would'nt life be tedious if we all had to think the same, act the same, vote the same. We would be in North Vietnam and by crikey that's more boring than the nunnery. Let's celebrate our freedom to read what we choose for goodness sake.

Greatnan Wed 11-Apr-12 11:58:58

Anagram - I did not mean to disparage your post, just to put a few facts into the pot for anyone who does not follow PE!
I wish I did have shares but my admiration is based solely on the courageous way PE tackles corruption and greed.
(And I apologise to Hislop for sometimes calling him an old-Etonian - he went to Ardingley College)

Carol Wed 11-Apr-12 11:37:37

I think Greatnan has shares in Private Eye! grin

Anagram Wed 11-Apr-12 11:16:18

OK, sorry I mentioned it....

Greatnan Wed 11-Apr-12 11:11:42

Carter Ruck have also represented the State of Qatar, The church of Scientology, and Trafigura and have been instrumental in obtaining gagging orders against many whistle blowers under the threat of libel actions.
Private Eye lost a case against Robert Maxwell, and was later proved to have been quite right about his defrauding of pension funds.
Just because somebody wins a libel case, it doesn't mean the accusations against them was not true.

Greatnan Wed 11-Apr-12 11:03:47

Pivate Eye lost a case brought by Sonia Sutcliffe, wife of Peter Sutcliffe and it was later proved that she had lied. That was when Ian Hislop made his famous remark 'If this is justice, I'm a banana'. I am told that the word 'banana' is sometimes whispered in courts where there is an ovbious miscarriage of justice. They have also successfully defended many libel cases, especially those brought by their favourite solicitors 'Carter Fuck'!
They are now very careful to be sure of their facts because they

simply cannot afford to lose any cases. I, for one, would happily contribute to any fund set up for their defence!

I don't carry a torch for any other publication, except my obvious choices like The Huffington Post and Atheism News, and I agree that most journalists these days (as we have seen) will sink to any depths to get a story.

Anagram Wed 11-Apr-12 10:37:24

Even Private Eye has lost several libel cases brought against it.
