I would bring back Capital Punishment, build more prisons, have zero tolerance for certain crimes. Get rid of Human Rights Bill so illegal immigrants can't hide behind it.

Being a lapsed RC I was going to make a comment on the rhythm method but decided not to trivialise the thread.
Sorry blush

Butternut Mon 20-Aug-12 19:16:59

J grin

Nice to have you back, by the way.

glitabo Mon 20-Aug-12 19:15:47

greatnan first time round?
I agree with you about using rhythm to help with literacy and numeracy. It definitely works with multiplication tables. Sounds like you had an interesting job greatnan . smile

jeni Mon 20-Aug-12 19:09:37

Anno, with a peak flow of 180 predicted. 500. You can't use a peashooter!

JO4 Mon 20-Aug-12 19:08:23

Blimey! This thread did turn out well, didn't it! shock

None of it was my fault.

grin

Butternut Mon 20-Aug-12 19:03:44

Mishap - with you all the way there. smile

Greatnan Mon 20-Aug-12 18:49:41

Mishap - I used to teach teachers how to use rhythm to help children with problems in number and reading. Music seems to retrain the brain.

Mishap Mon 20-Aug-12 18:46:56

If I were PM I would start Systema England so that every child, regardless of background or home income, had the chance to learn a musical instrument and to sing - just watch the confidence levels rise and the literacy and numeracy!

Annobel Mon 20-Aug-12 18:43:38

How about a pea shooter, jeni?

jeni Mon 20-Aug-12 18:36:22

Ah! Found it! I've just got a catapult ,and am practising with dried peas against one called Purdy!

Anagram Mon 20-Aug-12 18:31:05

You'll have to read the thread all over again, jeni! grin

jeni Mon 20-Aug-12 18:30:07

Cats?

Greatnan Mon 20-Aug-12 18:28:02

Well said, Glitabo - I expect you missed this thread first time round.

glitabo Mon 20-Aug-12 17:53:12

A society should be judged by the way it treats its more vulnerable members.
This includes,
people with
special needs,
mental health issues,
offending behaviour,
drug and alcohol issues,
long term unemployment.
That is my list and I am sure that other GNetters will have different lists.
If I were prime minister I would use what is good about this country,
i.e.
the NHS,
the education system (I know there are faults but is free and accessible to all, not the case in all countries).
The work done by the third sector, charities and private organisations..... and build on what good practice there is and give more funding so all these people can do what they are good at.

I would take health and education put of the political arena and stop making changes for the sake of it.

I would definitely agree with jesseM about cats.

One of the reasons I am so opposed to any kind of 'low level' racist remarks is that they encourage the kind of atmosphere in which extremists can flourish. At last it seems the police force are beginning to deal with racism within the ranks.

Anagram Wed 18-Apr-12 20:03:31

I doubt that very much, dorsetpennt - he probably sincerely believes he is superior to them!

dorsetpennt Wed 18-Apr-12 19:52:46

Well lucky for him Norway doesn't have capital punishment otherwise he would be for the high jump. The Norwegians are still devestated -large country but tiny population just under 5 million, and they are a lovely peaceful people. They simply don't understand this guy at all. What can you do with a mass murderer - or any murderer - stoop to his level? Difficult one. He'll never see freedom again but I sincerely hope he doesn't become a living martyr for the horrible super right factor in this world. What makes someone like that hate other races to this extreme - I simply don't understand it. Is it fear that he is inferior to them.

granjura Wed 18-Apr-12 19:50:18

Breivik should be first of all denied ALL publicity- no tv, no press - that would be his worst nightmare- he should never be given a platform to glorify his actions. Then prison for life.

ninnynanny Wed 18-Apr-12 19:45:06

Also what do you think should happen to Breivik for killing 72 people?

ninnynanny Wed 18-Apr-12 19:38:30

I have no problem with immigrants coming to the UK to work and raise their families, I object to ILLEGAL immigrants [Abu Qatada for example]. I have mixed race great grandparents and grandparents.

petallus Wed 18-Apr-12 17:04:57

Sorry Carol hadn't realised you were joking smile.

Greatnan most countries put some kind of restriction on immigration. Years ago friends of mine wanted to emigrate to Australia but were turned down.

Greatnan Wed 18-Apr-12 07:59:38

Carol - I knew you were joking!
I wonder if it is the very fact that so many immigrants work so hard and become so successful is the reason for the hostiity felt towards them in some sections of society?
The children of the immigrants from the Indian sub-continent have a huge take-up of higher education, as do those from Vietnam and China. Whether it is genetic or cultural, they do extremely well in maths, chess, and medicine.
Most Polish workers do not intend to settle permanently in the UK - they want to earn enough to enable them to go back to their own beautiful country and rejoin their families.
I really don't care about a person's country of origin as long as they obey the laws of their chosen country. (I would say that, wouldn't I, being a legal immigrant to France!)

Carol Wed 18-Apr-12 07:43:22

I WAS joking Petallus and I agree it works both ways - they are welcome to drop the terrorists belonging to this country back on British soil grin

petallus Wed 18-Apr-12 07:25:36

Carol in view of our country's recent history re. invading other countries and bombing the hell out of them for no good reason, it does feel a bit 'pots and kettles' to go on about dropping people in the ocean from 15 feet.

Humbertbear not sure your comment about immigrants doing jobs others won't do is really true in today's climate of high unemployment. One of my GS was desperately looking for work recently. He finally managed to get a very poorly paid job, with no security of regular hours, at a factory through an agency. All of the permanent workforce at this sizeable factory were Polish, recruited in Poland.
