What do you keep in your handbag?
Item on Woman's Hour today-The German artist who'll pay you 500 euros if you let him feature your bag in his exhibition in London.

Don't carry the tools now! Just stand and look poor old helpless looking granny at a useful looking male.
I can do a really good pathetic helpless stupid look!

Anagram Thu 12-Apr-12 22:50:00

Well, all I can say is that I hope you, jeni and granbunny never get arrested! You'll be done for 'going equipped'! grin

jeni Thu 12-Apr-12 22:47:31

All above, apart from hammer! I also carry plasters+++ as I have thin skin and am always skinning myself!
I think one of the things that attracted my dh to me was that I was the only female he knew who carried feeler gauges screwdriver and pliers with her.
Oh! I also carry iPad and emergency sewing kit!

expatmaggie Thu 12-Apr-12 22:03:05

Like most women who suffer from headaches, previously migraine attacks, I have Aspirin, Paracetamol and Migrileve in all my handbags. Then a couple of boiled sweets for low blood sugar, comb, keys, mobile, purse. Notebook and pencil.

granbunny - aren't you worried you might be accused of and/or charged with carrying an offensive weapon? I wonder if you'd be allowed on a plane...

granto8 Thu 12-Apr-12 21:50:18

TRY FEBREZE GREENMOSS IT REALLY DOES WORK WONDERS ON ALL THINGS ORGANIC ..........EXCEPT THE MALE SPECIES !!!!

granbunny Thu 12-Apr-12 21:38:32

anagram - no, i'm a survivalist! apparently, what you really need with you in an emergency are a small hammer (ideally a torch with a hammer end but i have both) and a tealight, which is enough to keep you alive in dire circumstances and a foil blanket in case the matches fail to light the tealight...grin

Anagram Thu 12-Apr-12 19:47:19

I've read some Amazon online comments about smelly bags, green. Have you looked at any reviews of yours?

greenmossgiel Thu 12-Apr-12 19:34:08

I think I'll give it a try, glamma I've got it sitting next to me at the moment - and it smells like a wet nappy!! I certainly can't use it like this, so I'll give the bicarb a try. I'll let it lie in a solution of it, then hang it out on the line again tomorrow! I'll let you know how it goes - for the future reference for gransnetters with smelly handbags grin!

Anagram Thu 12-Apr-12 19:19:08

Are you a house-breaker, granbunny? shock

granbunny Thu 12-Apr-12 19:11:08

i have a purse and phone, tissues, scarf, hammer for breaking windows, tealights and matches, foil blanket, baby wipes, antiseptic gel, umbrella (i don't usually but it matched my top and i was hoping for rain so i could show off), a pair of hairdressing scissors i bought yesterday to trim the bunnies' bums because i've mislaid my other pair...that's all i can remember without checking. loose change, probably, as the zip on my purse is weak.

glammanana Thu 12-Apr-12 18:52:24

green can you not give it a wash over with bi-carb that seems to de-smell most things ? just a thought smile

greenmossgiel Thu 12-Apr-12 18:47:31

Oh well grrrranny, if anyone sits next to me on the bus, I think they may wonder if I'm incontinent......shock It's a really nice bag, too! sad

grrrranny Thu 12-Apr-12 18:44:49

I think smell is from the glue - saw something on telly once about it but have no idea whether it will ever go away - sorry!

greenmossgiel Thu 12-Apr-12 18:39:24

I've got a SMELL in MY new bag! I bought it from Amazon and it smells awful. It's made of polyeurathene, with a cotton lining, but it smells all fishy! Has anyone got any tips on getting rid of the smell? I've used perfume, hung it outside on the line, etc, but to no avail! shock

Butternut Thu 12-Apr-12 18:19:08

I actively dislike using a handbag, and if I can get away without using one then I will. grin

dorsetpennt Thu 12-Apr-12 17:24:34

I have [just checked] : small organiser, purse, glasses, sun-glasses, tissues. santitiser, lip salve, bus pass holder with bus pass and work discount card, keys, half pkt polos, tic-tac, hold-all shopping bag that folds up really small, and more tissues, various receipts smile. Quite tidy really as some people have huge bags that carry loads more. My DIL's bag weighs a ton !

kittylester Thu 12-Apr-12 17:07:07

It's not anyone else's business!! Most handbag manufacturers make 'over the body' bags. They are quite trendy - I know that because all of my daughters have at least one! grin

eGJ Thu 12-Apr-12 16:48:33

Annobel I thought it a good idea, so went on to Amazon; all the other GNs have got there first as it now out of stock! Sound so useful, that I'll keep looking flowers Annobel

Annobel Thu 12-Apr-12 16:32:22

For holidays I have a slash-proof bag obtained from - who else? - Amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000YOIHS4/ref=wms_ohs_product

and I see now that I even wrote a review of it!

Otherwise, black goes with most things but I have a nice big red one and a collection of smaller ones in several different colours. I buy most of them from Ebay.

I use an Ameribag, which is a healthy ergonomic bag. They come in a huge range of fabrics and colours including leather. I have to have the largest size!
www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=healthy+back+bags&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=8915318073&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17876923001843234325&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_1kyw1xgc3g_b
This page is not big enough to list the contents of my bag! It was once handed in to the police when I left it in a shop, and they had listed everything - oh how embarrassing! The very long list ended with 'assorted nuts and bolts'. I carry numerous 'just in case' items, but no make-up! I have the reputation of being useful to have around in case of emergency.blush

GillieB Its a shame those cross over body bags don't come in a nice range of colours as they do in "ordinary" handbags.
Maybe this is an opening for a new business , we could have body bags in a huge range of colours and designswink

GillieB Thu 12-Apr-12 15:57:25

I hate changing handbags when you change your going out clothes. I keep on threatening to buy one of those organiser thingies so that I can just pull it out and put everything in the new bag.

I occasionally have to use a walking stick and, if I do, I have to use cross body bags - such a shame when I look at all those lovely coloured handbags I use only rarely.
