at the Songs of the Sea recital we went to. As we were waiting for it to start in the room full of chattering people, DH, who was sitting behind me, leaned forward and said: "I've just realised it doesn't bother me any more".

"What doesn't bother you any more?" I asked.

"This noise of a room full of chattering people".

I knew he'd had difficulty as a child and as a young man entering a crowded room, or even a room containing a few people. He still tends to enter and cross a room without looking at anyone in it, but he had got over the terror it induced by the time I met him in his thirties.

It was a salutory reminder to me of just how shy (if that is the word) someone can be! As it was a local concert, I was stretching my neck gazing around, trying to see who I recognised. DD was gazing around looking for someone younger than her! She spotted a boy about the same age, possibly younger but girls tend to be bigger at her age so he could have been the same age. And there was DH sitting behind us (we were in a corner of the room) thinking Hey! this isn't terrifying! shock but smile

DD, the boy and his older sister were the only kids which I thought a shame as the choral renderings of well-known sea shanties were great! There were two visiting soloists who sang other songs (Verdi, Tchaichovksy, Puccini) in the operatic style, which I'm not keen on (prefer Emma Kirkby's style of singing), and there was a local virtuosic flautist.

Congratulations to your husband, bagitha, it must have taken some courage to even go into the hall.
As a person who has never suffered from shyness, I can only guess at the anguish it can cause.
(I would have loved that concert - it sounds just the kind of music I enjoy.)

My OH has panic attacks in cinemas/concert halls/theatres so never goes - I am used to going on my own and always find someone nice to chat to.

bagitha Good newsabout your DH.
I also dislike a'room of chattering people' not from shyness or terror -it gives me a headache!
The 'Songs of the Sea' concert sounds great.
I share your love of Emma Kirkby's style of singing.I have long been one of her
fans.I first heard her way back in the late 70s at the Wigmore Hall singing with the lutenist Antony Rooley. Also heard her in Bristol about 5 yrs ago. Apart from that heavenly voice she is so beautiful with that gorgeous red hair and creamy complexion.
