I like reading poetry, however I also like writing poetry. Here is one of my earlier pieces.

The Birthday Card.

Damn the world,
Nobody cares about me,
Nobody comes round.
I’m ninety next week,
And I’ll get no cards,
As usual,
The government got in again,
No real opposition,
Same for forty years
In bloody power.
Everything privatised,
Next week, or so I hear,
They’re taxing the air we breathe.

I can’t sleep
without pain,
Bloody neighbours,
Their all night parties,
Music blasting so bloody loud,
Surprised the next town didn’t complain;
Police being privatised,
Couldn’t give a fig.
Need a thousand pounds,
Just to see the doctor;
You need a mortgage,
Just to get on the waiting list.

Have to hobble down,
To the bloody shops,
Only to be mugged again.
‘Live for today,’ they say,
Bugger it, how?
Hang on what’s this,
A bloody postman,
Haven’t seen one of them,
For over a year;
A bloody bill probably;
No its not,
It’s a birthday card;
What a bloody surprise!

Late Fragment

And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

A lovely poem for me -an old person nearing the end??

My spirit lies enchained
Why is this you ask?
Because my body is enslaved
To pain and I, cannot
Perform my tasks

The tasks that everyone of you
Take for granted
As you should
For me, are so impossible
That I pine to do them
As I should.

And physical pain my mind
It stunts
I want!
But cannot find
The will to do
And so, I sit
And dream
Of things that I would love to do!

You have to look quite hard Ian. smile

Ian42 Mon 30-Apr-12 20:08:07

Cannot find them, sorry.

Ariadne Mon 30-Apr-12 18:45:19

Have you looked at the exquisitely crafted poems on the other threads mentioned? You might find them helpful.

imjingl Mon 30-Apr-12 18:05:11

That is a good one, about buying a poppy.

I don't like the one about kids texting. It sounds too 'grumbling about any old thing'.

Have you got any happy ones?

Do you live in a bad area Ian? (the first one suggests you might. sad)

Ian42 Mon 30-Apr-12 16:25:27

Here is another one:

Why Do I Have To Buy This Poppy?

Why do I have to buy this poppy?
It has no meaning for me?
I don’t want to buy this poppy,
It was a war long forgotten to me,
So please, don’t say please, I don’t want it.

But son you must buy one poppy,
Your great granddad died for all,
So that you and I are at peace and free,
So buy a poppy from the man in the street,
I’ll know then that you’ll want it.

But dad, the man on the street,
He did not fight, so why should I buy a poppy from him.

He sells the poppies for those who cannot,
Standing out here in the wet and the cold for all those who died,
Remember the poppy, my son,
Remember those that are forgotten,
Remember Iraq, Ireland and Afghanistan,
And all the wars of yesterday,
And all the wars of today.

I will remember dad when I wear a poppy,
Can I buy a poppy from that strange man?
I’ll wear this poppy now with pride,
For I will remember them!

Interesting.

Here is another one, which is quite topical.

Going out texting.

Kids roll out of bed,
its three in the afternoon,
to look up their mates
on the social internet
they arange to go out,
that night they stand round
texting each other,
saying 'should we go home
an internet each other',
they just change their minds
and roll back into bed
at three in the morning.
