would you leave a child in the bath for 2-3 mins whilst you popped to the room next door ??

I did this last night with DGS who is 3. Then spent the next hour thinking OMG what if............blush

I remember doing this, and feeling exacty the same! (Funny how we all seem to experience the same things isn't it!).

They're pretty steady at 3. And I don't suppose you had the bath that deep. He could have got himself up. You would have heard the splash.

Out of your mind with it.

Now!!! grin

DD who is pretty good at keeping me up to the mark has done same with DGS1 who is nearly 2 - literally popping to the next room to get his pjs. I probably wouldn't dare(!) but of course did with my own! DGS 1 does have this habit of flinging himself face down into the water and announcing he is "wimming" which tends to alarm me smile
The "OMG what if" reflex must be a Granny thing - I have suffered similarily- re. might have touched dog poo germs at playground/might have fallen down stairs when followed me up one day without anybody noticing/ one large tsp of Calpol might have been too much/and one really scary one - when he picked up a sliver of glass (a crystal nail file which I had dropped and thought I had cleared up) from the bathroom floor and solemnly handed it to me!!!
Never know how my children survived to adulthood.

At no age .... I'm too neurotic, particularly with my grandchildren. Like Gracesmum's my DGS aged 6 flings himself around in the bath ... I'm terrified that he'll knock himself out!

On a serious note, I am forever haunted by my experience as a teenage student nurse in A&E, or Casualty as it was then known, in an inner-city childrens' hospital, unsuccessfully trying to resuscitate drowned children.

I found it so very hard to leave my children and the grandchildren alone in the bath, not even for a minute. When they were older I used to hang around the bathroom door asking every few mins " are you ok" ?
This is all because when I was 13 my dear sister aged 16 died of carbon monoxide poisoning while in the bath. I can still see it as if it were only yesterday, my poor dear dad pulling her out of the water and I can hear the someone screaming only to discover that someone is me sad

Likewise Riverwalk I would never leave a child in the bath. I worked in A&E too and saw the scalds and lumps on the head from slipping and banging head.

Annika. I can well imagine how this has haunted you all your life. ((((hugs)))).

I can not go into a steamy bathroom , my lot know that after they have had a shower or bath the windows and door have to be wide open ( whatever the weather) to let out the steam .

I once left my son (then aged 7) in the bath whilst I went to get a towel. I went back into the bathroom to find him unconscious under the water. Apparently although he appeared well that day, he actually had a virus and the warm bath had caused his temperature to suddenly spike and he had passed out and slid under the water just as I walked in. He's 22 now and all these years later, I still dread leaving little ones in the bath alone.

My grandson is 9 and he knows the rule is that he has to sing loudly when in the shower or bath otherwise ..."I am coming in".

I have just read the entire thread - Hugs Annika xxx

We can all understand how you feel, Annika - what an awful way to lose a sister.
One of my gds suffered from childhood epilepsy and could not be left in the bath alone , so once she got too self-conscious to have someone in the bathroom with her, my DD had to use the singing routine too. It was easier once she was able to use the shower alone. (She has not had a seizure since she was about 9).
