The Coronation

spent the night in Hyde Park. went to Marble Arch station for the loo. Newspaper sellers billboards were showing 'Hilary reaches summit of Everest'. I ran back to my spot along the route to tell the good news. It poured with rain as my grainy black and white photos show. And ,yes, Queen Salote of Tonga was the star. Let it rain , who cares!.

I was twelve, but I can't remember much about it tbh. We didn't have telly, though. I think I can remember a street party.

Only a babe but grandfather bought a television and all extended family watched it

Have since watched it thanks to television recently watched a programme on the events 'behind' the scenes . If it hadn't been for Prince Philip and the people pressure (stirred up by BBC) it would not have been broadcast and there wouldn't have been cameras in the abbey ...the Queen Mother didn't want it, neither did Winston Churchill ...would take away the mystic

I remember the street party and the piles of goodies that where on offer we all got a mug or teaspoon and watched the TV with all the neighbours piled into our front room I think it was when we had one of those screens in front of the TV which gave off colours,dad was ill on that day he was in bed with mumps and was very poorly mum spent the day running up and down stairs giving him a running commentary on what was going on.

Hunt Yes i was there too.slept on the pavement in Hyde Park.Very cold and wet.Maybe we even passed on the way to the loo!

I was at primary school at that time and we were all given a tiny die cast model of the gold coach and horses. I loved that and played with it for ages. I recently bought one on eBay which now sits on my kitchen window cill

I was at primary school too. I was 8. I vaguely remember watching it on tv!
I definitely remember the beacon on Barr Beacon in the midlands.

I was three. My parents bought a television in time for the Coronation and I remember that it was a Philco, with a tiny, tiny screen in a big wooden case. Neighbours from our row came in to crowd round it and watch!

Hunt wasn't it Noel Coward who, when asked who the diminutive man sitting opposite Queen Salote in her open carriage was, replied "Her lunch"!

Maniac and Hunt, that makes three of us. I spent the night on the pavement near Hyde Park. Soldiers from a Scottish regiment wearing kilts were lined up in front of us. I'm regretting not having made the effort to go to London today, but there we are, I'm in front of the telly. As a family we saw the Silver Wedding procession from Ludgate Hill.

No memories of my own but my mum traveled with her aunt and Uncle from Devon to London for the big day, she was just 12 and still talks about being lifted up to see the queen.

I was 10 the day before the coronation, I can remember feeling a bit peeved because it wasn`t on my birthday. We all went round to my Auntie Clara and Uncle John`s prefab, they owned one of the few TVs in the area, there were about 20 people in their front room, all trying to get a glimpse of the 9" screen!

I had just started primary school and I remember that we bought our first tv just for the Coronation. We had a street party, I do remember that.

On the subject of Coronations, I have a plate from my mother, which was presented to all the children of Leeds on the occasion of the coronation of Edward VII on 26th June 1902. It has been overstamped on the reverse with "Coronation postponed owing to the sudden illness of His Majesty King Edward VII from June 26th to 9th August 1902" - I have always wondered how they managed to postpone it and re-schedule it - it must have been a nightmare.

Don't I mean the Silver Jubilee? I'm confused now. Time gets telescoped. Was thinking more about the Coronation procession and remember admiring the Scottish soldiers' socks! We did have plenty of time to admire them.

I wasn't born in1953 but DH remembers it. He was 5 years old and the chap who wound the church clock took him up the church bell tower so that he could watch the bells being rung. He was even taken up to the belfry and stood in the doorway watching the bells ringing full circle. It must have made an impression because he later became a church bellringer himself.

I have seen photographs of him at a street party on coronation day but he only remembers seeing the church bells.

We got our telly for the Coronation too. We were living in a little school in Poulton-le-Fylde that my mum ran at the time, and the tv was in the big dining room and all neighbours and parents and everyone came.

Decided to post on this thread ...as others to do with the events of these last few days ...seem to be disagreeing sharing differing points of view

We got our TV just after George VI died and just missed his funeral, but it was all systems go for the coronation! Family, friends, neighbours and the dog all piled in to watch the tiny screen. Can't believe it was 59 years ago.

I do get cross that some broadcasters believe that this is the jubilee of the coronation. Yesterday on 5 Live one interviewer was asking a lady who was celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary if the gold and white colour scheme for her wedding was inspired by the coronation. Of course it wasn't, you silly woman. The coronation was a year later!

My dad won £75 on the football pools and bought a Ferguson TV just in time for the day. We had relations and the boy from across the road in to watch it. Then I went to a farmer's field trestle-table party and collected my spoon and a little Cadbury's tin. It was sooo cold and started to rain.
