I can't find Gaitskell via Google but i found this one
A version that was popular in the 1970s had these lyrics:

The people's flag is palest pink
It's not as red as you might think.
White collar workers stand and cheer
Your Labour government is here.
We'll change the country bit by bit
so no-one will notice it.
And just to show we're still sincere
We'll sing The Red Flag once a year.

The cloth cap and the woollen scarf are images outdated
For we're the party's avant garde and we are educated
Then raise the rolled umbrella high
The college scarf, the old school tie
And just to show we're still sincere
We'll sing The Red Flag once a year.

Sorry meant to say above was sung by Billy Bragg not written by him.

I know this version by Billy Bragg.

The people's flag is palest pink
we bleached it in the kitchen sink
and though our arms are stiff and sore
we'll bleach it just a little more

chorus:
Hang the scarlet banner low
why we bother I don't know
though cowards flinch and traitors sneer
we'll make them both feel welcome here

It suits today our stated aims
of bigger cages, longer chains
we'll hide it where it can't be seen
or maybe if we dyed it green

(chorus)

with heads uncovered swear we all
to sell our papers at Town Hall
and wave our placards in the air
and act like anybody cares

"The people's flag is palest pink
Since Gaitskell washed it in the sink".....

Any one know any more?

Hollande - red of course 'cos of his politics.
Putin = khaki 'cos he seems so military.
Thatcher - blue: she wore it a lot, it's how she makes me feel, and she's Tory.
Gordon Brown - mud brown - he just is.
Tony Blair - red. I know he wasn't a red - pale pink at most, but somehow the colour suits him.
Merkel - green - don't know why. I suppose I think of Germany as green.
Cameron - blue. He just is.
Clegg - multi-coloured: I just can't pin him down.
Our own PM in Australia, Julia Gillard: red as in a red Welsh dragon.
Our opposition leader Tony Abbott - green as in budgies (sorry, it's an 'in' joke)

(Being a fitness fanatic he is often seen in swimmers, those brief ones which are called 'budgie smugglers' here)

Yes - murky! grin

glassortwo Sun 10-Jun-12 22:52:26

Merkel putty colour.

Anagram Sun 10-Jun-12 22:29:43

Lighten up, nanaej, I don't think this is a serious thread!

nanaej Sun 10-Jun-12 22:24:54

My point though is that they are not 'the like'..they are all different although holding the title president or chancellor as in Merkel's case! You can have right wing, left wing, inherited wealth, self-made etc etc presidents.

Royalty less diverse in background..all inherited status.

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 20:54:03

Oh she's beige.

Although I do like her.

Anagram Sun 10-Jun-12 20:51:34

Angela Merkel?

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 20:39:14

I did say "and the like". Can't list 'em all! hmm

Anagram Sun 10-Jun-12 20:36:56

Francois Hollande sounds beige to me.
Maybe I'm thinking of hollandaise sauce...? confused

nanaej Sun 10-Jun-12 20:15:54

Not stoopid! But they are different political animals so in my mind not similar. As not all kings & queens are the same..and you missed out Obama, MacAleese etc

nanaej Sun 10-Jun-12 20:02:45

Think she is trying, not too subtley, to tempt us into a debate about politics! Royalty vs presidents.

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 20:01:47

They are both heads of republics.

Geddit? hmm

nanaej Sun 10-Jun-12 19:58:14

I would not put Putin an Hollande in the same pigeon hole!

Jacey Sun 10-Jun-12 19:58:00

Why are you in colour mode JJ ...you've started two posts about it confused

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 19:56:44

OPh yes. You said that didn't you. grin hmm

But you must know what I mean.

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 19:56:02

Colours can influence moods and feelings.

Jacey Sun 10-Jun-12 19:54:47

Oh ...I shall have to think about that!. I tend to associate colours with moods and feelings rather than actual people.hmm

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 19:54:27

Depressing colours, really.

j04 Sun 10-Jun-12 19:53:06

the likes of Putin of Russia, Francois Hollande of France, and the like.

For me its blacks and steel grey.
