Our 40 year old son is leaving home - again!

Good luck to you and your family members, kitty! My youngest brother had a similar life-changing experience at the age of twenty-six, except that his was a car crash. He'll be fifty in September.

Ah Kitty that is great for him. He has been lucky to have you around and it is lovely for him that he can start to live independently again.

Thank you for your kind comments. I wasn't really looking for praise, I was actually marvelling at the fact I am happy about him moving out when I had thought I would be really anxious! Though he does deserve praise for his determination to make the best of an awful situation and move on with his life

Well done to you all, kitty. And well done for not being anxious about his moving out! That in itself tells you that you've come to terms with his own confidence in his abilities to cope - and that can't have been an immediate thing, either. Warmest wishes to you all.

I do not think you can ever guarantee your son / daughter has left home for good.
My son worked in London and got early retirement at 53.
Unfortunately his wife passed away and my wife passed away in 2001 and he inherited half of my house.
His daughter and son went to Birmingham University and got married and are now working in Birmingham.
My son sold his house and came to live with me.
We both feel it is no use him buying another house. I am in my 80's and can prepare food etc but can not really look after the gardens so well and can no longer drive.
By living together we have reduced the amount of work / expense considerably and I am sure at my age my care needs will increase.
He will inherit my half of the house anyway hopefully in the distant future.
