My 50th bithday when I had my own piper playing "happy birthday" to me on the bag pipes. The piper went by the nickname of "spud".
We stayed in a hotel in Grant Town on Spey.
The people and the weather were lovely, I am looking forward to going again.
I never think of "Nessy" when someone says Scotland. I think of the wonderful views, the Cairngorms and shortbread ! grin

Mountains, lochs, heather-clad moors, wee cottages in the middle of nowhere, friendly folk who put themselves out to be supportive, beautiful large-horned, red-haired highland cattle, the otter on the rock, the deer by the fence, the feral cat on the mat, and a generous, heart-warming glug of -uisge-beatha 'the water of life' [malt whisky!] smile

Glad you mentioned the colour of the sea on the west coast, glass. When people ask me what my favourite colour is, that's what I think of.

Hunt Thu 14-Jun-12 18:14:30

The Falkirk wheel-awesome!

soop Thu 14-Jun-12 18:19:57

...not forgetting the village ceilidh...noisy, fun, enjoyed by tots to the more mature members of the community. Oh, and the way a Scot makes the language such a treat to listen to. Love everything there is about bonnie Scotia.

Eagles, ospreys, salmon ladders, whisky distilleries, isles, lochs and mountains, deep-fried Mars bars (still haven't tried one) shortbread, Edinburgh tattoo, bagpipes................

Anagram Thu 14-Jun-12 18:25:13

That's true, soop - the only thing I liked about Gordon Brown was his voice, with that hint of a Scottish accent!

Annobel Thu 14-Jun-12 18:33:10

Holidays when I was about 11/12, in Dunoon. We went out every day on the paddle steamers around the isles, and the Games, pipers and caber tossing!

I have only been to Scotland once, and it wasn't on holiday. It was many years ago, somewhere (I think) near Pitlochry?

When I have tried to describe my impressions of it, I always end up saying "I know that the sky is just the sky, but it seemed bigger there, and the mountains were just................."

Probably makes no sense, but I know what I mean!

Sook Thu 14-Jun-12 21:19:43
