I very rarely get hangovers – a bad sign as I frequently have a glass or two. However, the following are thought to be good ways of helping to relieve the misery:
• Lots of non-alcoholic fluid. I would go easy on anything acidic, such as orange or tomato juice which can easily upset an already sensitive stomach. Those isotonic sports drink thingies are quite good.
• Honey – the fructose helps get the alcohol out of the system and the vitamin B6 helps relieve symptoms.
• Eggs – contain cysteine that helps the body get rid of toxins. Softly boiled or poached may be the most easily digested, but the classic cure is a Prarie Oyster. Put 1 measure brandy, 1/2 measure red or white wine vinegar, 1/2 measure Worcestershire sauce, a good shake of tomato ketchup and some cracked ice into a cocktail shaker and shake well until a mist forms on the outside. Strain into a tumbler and add 1 egg yolk (without breaking it) and sprinkle with a pinch of cayenne pepper. It should be swallowed in one go.
