does anyone else just love the little bird in the EDF adverts, and why oh why is it not the Olympic mascot instead of that awful one eyed monster?

feetlebaum Sun 17-Jun-12 22:32:36

Must agree those Olympic mascots are nightmarish...

Little bird - is THAT what that is? I had been wondering...

j04 Sun 17-Jun-12 22:36:36

What has that thing got to do with the Olympics? Why would that make a good mascot? confused

At least there's good reasoning behind Wenlock and Mandeville. (And grandson loves 'em)

It's cute and I smile every time I see it! What is the reasoning behind Wenlock and Mandeville and their one eye?

j04 Sun 17-Jun-12 23:12:35

You don't know!!! shock

Much Wenlock in Shropshire is where the first Modern Olympics were held and Mandeville is for Stoke Mandeville hospital where they treat disabled people.

j04 Sun 17-Jun-12 23:15:08

all about 'em

crimson Sun 17-Jun-12 23:40:45

Yes, I googled it so I know now. But surely, when you market something it should be instantly likeable and not need explaining to people. Will be interesting to see how many of them sell. It's the one eye thing that gives me the creeps.

I think the point I'm trying to make is that the litle bird thing only has two eyes and a sort of nose but those two eyes express so many moods; sad, happy etc. Wouldn't work with just one.

crimson I love it too. I think it reminds me of a cute baby! hmm

JessM Mon 18-Jun-12 09:32:52

I am glad your grandson loves them j
I am worried that cute things normally have TWO big eyes, and that the lack of eye number 2 will affect sales of souvenirs. The two eye thing is kind of programmed into us - we see 2 big round eyes and a round face and respond as if it is a human baby - isn't it cute, i want to cuddle it.
I will look out for the edf bird. Bet it has got a round head and two eyes.

They are selling ok where I am. And I have had to pay for most of 'em! hmm

They grow on you.

It's the ones where they are made to look like the different events that DGS likes. He had to do a 'presentation' in class the other day (he's 6!!! hmm) He did it on 'Swimming' cos that is his present passion. He took in his Aquatics Wenlock to help illustrate it. smile

I don't think us grans are expected to cuddle them jess. smile

jeni Mon 18-Jun-12 11:22:17

I thought it was a flame, not a bird?confused

j04 Mon 18-Jun-12 11:28:37

sounds more likely to me jeni. grin

I fully appreciate why they are called Wenlock and Mandeville, I just don't understand why they are so hideous. Could it be in order to match the frightful 2012 logo?

jeni Mon 18-Jun-12 11:45:41

amnagram I just can't believe it!

j04 Mon 18-Jun-12 12:11:31

The kids don't find 'em frightful! And they're the ones that are likely to buy them weedle them out of their grannies' purses.

j04 Mon 18-Jun-12 12:12:55

They're definitely flames. (e-bay)

crimson Mon 18-Jun-12 12:27:18

Saw a guardsman one on John Lewis the other day, and wanted to buy one because the uniform was so bright, but it just had a black dot instead of any sort of facial feature. At least I now understand that they're educational and if it makes children understand about disability then that's good. I think I know who's producing them [made in China I would imagine]. May find out more next year if I bump into him.

crimson Mon 18-Jun-12 12:33:48

Looking at the little birds on ebay makes me realise how important it is to get the eyes just in the right place [some of them are rubbish!] I will have to buy one, though. I've actually got a picture of one stuck next to my desk. I must point out that I don't usually buy stuff like this.

shysal Mon 18-Jun-12 15:41:39

I must be thick because I had not realized that the EDF bird was supposed to be a flame! I think it is sweet but couldn't work out what it represented. I think I might knit some for GCs, have ordered a pattern from ebay.

j04 Mon 18-Jun-12 16:32:54

Why would anybody want an EDF Energy flame mascot toy? confused

Ella46 Mon 18-Jun-12 16:34:00

Beats me JO4!

Anagram Mon 18-Jun-12 16:58:00

You two are so hard-hearted!
