I dont use taxis very often as I usually drive.

But lunch time I drove back to school to pick up DGD from nursery jumped out of car collected her, got back in and the car would not start tried to bump start it but no joy and the incline I was on was not steep enough for me to bump with out help as its a big jeep and its pouring here. So phoned a taxi to get us both home waited 20 mins till he arrived and traveled 2 miles home £7.00 is it me or is that expensive!!!

My taxi fares back and forth from my tribunal are£50 a day! A distance of about 11 miles each way. The Bristol cabs want £34 each way!

What!!!!

Anagram Thu 21-Jun-12 13:34:18

glass, I think taxi meters are set to charge a fixed rate for the first mile, say £5.00, then so much per mile after that.

I used to live in London where £25–35 fares are not at all unusual, even for relatively short journeys. (Black cabs charge by time not distance and London is congested most of the time.) Where I live now, it's £3.50 anywhere in the centre of town and a little bit more further out. It's much cheaper for me to use cabs than to pay insurance, tax, parking charges, etc. for having a car.

I have to taxi as I can't walk from the car park and also can't carry the files!

Taxi fares are set by the Local Council and the firms are not allowed to put the fares up without the say so of the Council. We have never had a car and use taxies all the time. Our out goings are far less than if we owned and ran a car.We recently spent £260 over one weekend on taxies. When I told a friend she was amazed. I asked her how much she had spent on her car in the previous week and she said £250 on a service. I rest my case. Taxies are only expensive if you run a car as well

glass that's about right around my area. hmm

glammanana Thu 21-Jun-12 15:56:48

glass a journey of approx 2 miles to DDs house would cost £4.50 here,we only use taxi's if we are going out to dinner or to the cinema and are going to have a drink otherwise use the car.Obviously if what happened with your car to-day it would be a differant matter.
Hunt you also have to bear in mind that your pal would not be paying £250.00 on a service every week.My car costs are £25-30 per week depending on petrol

In Boston, there`s £2.40 on the clock before the taxi sets off, then it goes up by 20p every 200 yards or so. It`s about a mile from the town centre to our house, and depending on which route they take, the cost varies between £3.20 and £4.60.

We very rarely use taxis , but a friend of ours who does , was moaning about the cost and remarked the meter goes faster than the taxi

glassortwo Thu 21-Jun-12 20:16:13

When we go out I usually get out of the taxi and leave Mr Glass to settle the bill grin but when I told him how much it was he said it was expensive.

glass that has happened to me many times the best one was when I stalled on a slight hill leading onto a roundabout and caused a traffic-jam and had to be pushed around the corner by some young lads, the stupid thing started up again to everyones cheers and my red face mr glamma said make sure you always have enough petrol and I assured him the dial said it was 1/4 full yes says "he who knows best" a 1/4 full is a lot in the mini drive but in his mercedes it was a drop in the ocean and just slooshed about in the bottom of the tank confused

glassortwo Thu 21-Jun-12 21:37:37

glamma he gave me that stupid woman look [mad] I think its a dodgy starter motor.

glassortwo Thu 21-Jun-12 21:38:32

not mad angry grin

glammanana Thu 21-Jun-12 21:39:57

Its strange how the men through the length and breath of the country have perfected that look ? it must be something that they practice when they are bored.

jeni Thu 21-Jun-12 21:49:18

Come on ladies. We do have an equivalent.

MEN!

Hunt Thu 21-Jun-12 23:27:50

Glammanana, neither would I be spending £250 a week on taxies. I hope in your calculations that you have included depreciation, insurance, tax, repairs, maintenance, MOT, and of course ,petrol.

My ex OH is in a care home. He's allowed to go to pub half a mile away provided he gets lift or taxi back.Taxi costs £4 each way !

I don't have any choice about using a car as there is no public transport in the area. However, I like to explore out-of-the-way lanes and be free to make my own timetable, so running a car is as essential to my life style as eating. My grandson lives in Brixton and does not have a car because it would be so expensive and he uses the tube all the time. My sister lives in a suburb of Manchester and a taxi firm runs from her local Morrison's supermarket at a fixed charge of £2.60 within a radius of about three miles. There is a little bus which is supposed to service her estate, but the owners won't run it after 5 pm. because it is not profitable for them. Most of the regular users are pensioners and don't go out much in the evenings. The privatisation of bus services was a major blow to people living outside town centres but of course the owners of Stagecoach are now mega-rich, so that's all right then.

jeni or even extortionate????? grin
