Kate's clothes bill

So the Duchess of Cambridge spends close to her husband's salary on clothes does she? Attagirl! A woman after my own heart.
I was so impressed that she wears things several times, borrows/shares with her mum/buys high street fashion especially in the sales/ seems quite thrifty. I am glad her FIL foots the bill, Camilla clearly has him well trained.
Apparently Kate could spend less if she negotiated discounts with designers or accepted "freebies" - but what a meal the press would make of that!

Maybe cos they're family with Camilla's great-grandmother being Edward VII's mistress so they have a lot in common.

Anagram Fri 29-Jun-12 19:06:31

hmm

merlotgran Fri 29-Jun-12 20:00:02

Eh? confused

merlotgran Fri 29-Jun-12 20:05:25

Have I got the wrong duchess? shock

merlotgran Fri 29-Jun-12 20:44:46

Don't know if Judy Garland was a republican but this might have been her take:

The little duchess is contemplating
How much her clothes are gonna cost.
She is the subject of much debating ,
She maybe doesn’t give a toss.
Her hubbie’s wages don’t quite pay the bill,
His granny’s subjects don’t have cash to spill.
C’mon get happy she’s got her Choos on
Exudes ‘designer’ all the way,
Shout hallelujah, come on get happy,
She’s heading for the judgement day.

Alice Keppel....was that her name, the Edward V11's mistress, who was Camilla's great-grandmother? hmm

Anagram Fri 29-Jun-12 21:21:55

What's that got to do with Kate, though? confused

greenmossgiel Fri 29-Jun-12 21:24:32

Oh - got off the thread a bit there! Absolutely nothing to do with Kate at all. blush

Anagram Fri 29-Jun-12 21:26:33

Oh, no not you, green - I was actually wondering what vampirequeen meant! smile

greenmossgiel Fri 29-Jun-12 21:27:47

I've been assuming we're talking about Kate but maybe whitewave meant Camilla does a lot of talking. I'm a bit confused as well.

jeni Fri 29-Jun-12 22:22:56

And me!confused
But anyway I'm to bed!
Got to drive to Gloucester tomorrow for my DGD' s 1st birthday party!smile

Charles gets nothing from the Civil List so it's not a problem (can't believe I'm about to chat about royalty!) she looks lovely and as we see her so often, I am glad he didn't choose a bookish, rather plump girl - wouldn't do much for the country's image! Talking about obscene extravagance - that is certainly how I do view the Monarchy - but apparently they don't cost us much - the Queen has never put a foot wrong but let's end it after her - can't believe the youngsters want to go on - this is where George Osborne could thinks of cuts - a rather less visible lot would be my idea!!

I think Kate is very charming but I think too many exquisite outfits and large hats have been seen lately on all members of the Royal family. People are terribly anxious at the moment and although big events can be entertaining, it can appear unfeeling to the general public to be seen as too extravagant. Even her cheapest dresses are too much for my modest budget even for a special occasion. She looks pretty in the simplest clothes actually.

Chris1603 Fri 29-Jun-12 22:53:11

I looked for one of the day dresses she wore online and found it for £75, but of course it was sold out.

whitewave Fri 29-Jun-12 22:58:47

It probably wouldn't fit one of my legs. The Duchess of Corwall is the one who yaks a lot.

janepearce6....I'm stunned at that comment. What image do you want for the country? We're a society of size obsessed illiterate clothes hangers?

Charles' gets £2 million from the treasury for his 'expenses'. So it does cost us money.

Anagram Sat 30-Jun-12 10:54:56

Illiterate? confused

And poor Charlie has awarded himself an extra couple of millions as dear DIL is costing too much money. (blimey wait until the granchildren come along he will need another 10 million ).I am planning on awarding myself a couple of million this year just to see me through ....you know how it is. Hope you don't mind all you hardworking tax payers!!! Ha ha

Oh gawd - I have no idea how to buy clothes - I'm a jeans and jumper/shorts and Tshirt kind of person. One Whitsuntide when i was around 16 mum gave me money to buy a nice coat. Trouble is, the fashion was swagger coats and I loathed them. I bought myself an anorak and a pair of hiking boots instead. Poor Mum - she was trying to get me interested in my appearance.

I have to admire women who get it right regarding clothes, 'cos they have a skill I never had. I did OK in the mini era but before and after than - rubbish!

I suppose Kate has a fashion duty to fulfill - no doubt when she gets pregnant her choice of pregnancy clothes will sell well too. However, the money quoted leaves me astounded.

Royalty doesn't bother me one way or the other - better than the bovine excrement we see regarding the choosing of presidents anyway.

Greatnan Mon 02-Jul-12 07:13:06

They really can't win - Anne has attracted many critical comments for wearing the same clothes on several occasions, sometimes years apart.
Diana changed the public attitude to Aids sufferers almost single-handedly, by sitting on their beds, shaking their hands, etc . which is why she was much loved by gay people.
I am another who wouldn't cross the road to see any member of royalty, but I don't think they can be described as workshy (well, excluding Andrew)- I think Anne has over 500 official engagements a year. I can't think of anything more boring than having to have lunch or dinner with local councillors who are probably tongue-tied by nervousness
and pretending to be interested in yet another cheese factory.
I agree that only those in direct line to the throne should receive financial support.

So not Harry, then? Unless William cops it before producing an heir.

nanaej Mon 02-Jul-12 10:10:44

I agree Anne is good at her job. I had to meet her for a work related event and she was good at making people feel comfortable and relaxed and she was able to appear interested in what we were all there for! Though I often had more than 500 appointments /engagements a year in my job too and I had to wash and iron all my own clothes! Of all the royals I feel Anne is more aware of the future for royalty which is why she chose not to have 'royal' children.

greatnan Edward VIII when Prince of Wales exhibited an interesting attitude to receptions on one occasion in Brighton. My mother told me that after a dinner there he went missing while the guests waited for him to reappear so that they could be presented to him. After a search, he was found in his hotel room, where he had retired with the wife of one of the dignitaries.
