Kate's clothes bill

So the Duchess of Cambridge spends close to her husband's salary on clothes does she? Attagirl! A woman after my own heart.
I was so impressed that she wears things several times, borrows/shares with her mum/buys high street fashion especially in the sales/ seems quite thrifty. I am glad her FIL foots the bill, Camilla clearly has him well trained.
Apparently Kate could spend less if she negotiated discounts with designers or accepted "freebies" - but what a meal the press would make of that!

I wonder what she has personally achieved other than marry the son of the Prince of Wales.

Katie Price may not be a paragon of virtue but she has to work hard to keep herself in the limelight.

Annobel Wed 27-Jun-12 18:39:52

No! She was NOT sent to Edinburgh! The University in question is ST ANREWS which isn't in Edinburgh and from which I graduated 50 years ago this month.

Nonu Wed 27-Jun-12 18:27:33

Noneaj , forgive me by KW do you mean Kate ? However wasn"t she sent to Edinburgh by whoever , and caught Williams eye

nanaej Wed 27-Jun-12 18:22:03

I have no probs with people 'making it' through honest hard work and endeavour. Troube is KW did not really.. just caught the eye of royalty!

Nonu Wed 27-Jun-12 18:02:33

They sure have worked their way up , Carole in particular , her gran would be proud , talk about pulling yourself up by the boot straps[grin , grin ]

Katie Price probably works equally as 'hard' as Katie Windsor and both have to look good in public to fulfil their roles. Katie P probably generates money /jobs too. Whether I personally think either of them are important or make a positive contribution to society is another matter!

I'm not angry I just don't see why we should pay for the clothes of a privileged young woman (not detracting from the work of her parents but she was privileged thanks to their success) who has married into an even more privileged family.

I wonder in what way Kate and William are a good advert for Britain? What aspect of Britishness do they promote? Why would seeing them in the media encourage a tourist to come to the UK?

Ariadne Wed 27-Jun-12 17:51:40

You know, I really couldn't give a toss what she wears. But I never have cared for the expense of them all.

GoldenGran Wed 27-Jun-12 17:45:54

I think Catherine is comes from a hard working family and she has done well, and I do believe she and Prince William do add value to our tourist trade , they are a good advert for Britain.

I think one's preception of one's public image can be a contributary factor in anorexia and bulimia. I can understand your opinion, vampire [I'm not much of a Royalist] but I don't understand why you seem so angry with it. If Kate and her family were born with blue blood I could understand your anger, but she and her family have worked their way up, both financially and socially and are to be applauded imo. I do agree that the poor and homeless need help but sometimes people need to help themselves as well. A difficult balance sometimes. The person who makes me angry is Katie Price making thousands from articles about a load of rubbish..the latest one being her fake tan not working confused...

vampirequeen Wed 27-Jun-12 17:17:06

She's a duchess not a princess. No they don't work. Tourists would come for our history regardless. I make my own decisions. I don't have to rely and Andrew Marr. Oh and who said anything about me being a republican lol.

Gally Wed 27-Jun-12 16:47:33

So Princess Catherine and her new close family 'do not work'? The fact is that they bring in millions and millions of £ to our economy and if that is not working, then I don't know what is. I recommend you read Diamond Queen by Andrew Marr - a former 'republican' convert; it's quite an eye opener and I believe should be compulsory reading.

vampirequeen Wed 27-Jun-12 16:31:16

I'd rather my contribution was given to the homeless and they paid for themselves.

merlotgran Wed 27-Jun-12 16:28:52

The Royal Family are welcome to my taxpayer's contribution of less than 70p per year.

Charlotta Wed 27-Jun-12 16:23:36

I was relieved to read that some of the posters found Kate a little bit old fashioned. I liked her better as a student. Her formal dresses and outfits are getting more amd more outlandish due to her extreme thinness. I think continental royals especially Victoria of Sweden and Mary of Denmark are much better dressed - just smarter somehow. They have better designers, who design just for them not for Oxford Street.

vampirequeen Wed 27-Jun-12 15:51:23

There is no reason for her to look a frump but let's get beyond the pretence that she shops in the high street. I fail to see the link between clothes and eating disorders. If you're considering Diana her bulimia was due to the situation in her marriage not to the fact she was a clothes horse.

crimson Wed 27-Jun-12 15:46:05

She can't win, really. She'd get critiscism if she look a frump . No wonder women in the public eye suffer from eating problems etc.

vampirequeen Wed 27-Jun-12 15:44:09

How many women do you know by designer clothes? Gone are the days when she wore 'high street'. It's hardly workwear. She walks and smiles. She sits and smiles. She stands and smiles. She shakes hands and smiles. I don't call that work.

Lilygran Wed 27-Jun-12 15:30:31

Now I see what the problem is. It's nothing to do with the Duch of Camb herself, it's to do with the institution of monarchy. So address the arguments to that issue rather than to her frocks!

gillybob Wed 27-Jun-12 15:22:48

Workwear Lilygran ? What work would that be exactly? Work is something you have to do to make ends meet, to pay the bills and eat.

She (like the entire family) does not work. She attends functions, smiles, wear clothes, holidays, wears clothes etc but non of this is work.

Most women probably spend as much in a lifetime as she spends in one year on clothes !

vampirequeen I agree that like Diana her sole purpose is to produce an heir and the quicker the better or else her madge will be getting twitchy!

FlicketyB Wed 27-Jun-12 15:21:48

Johanna, size has nothing to do with elegance. Its how you dress.

Lilygran Wed 27-Jun-12 13:48:44

1. She buys and wears a lot of clothes that cost sums within the reach of ordinary women. Clothes like them sell out after she's worn them.
2. She often wears the same outfit to different events
3. Most women, as I understand it, pay as much as they can afford for clothes for special occasions (weddings, proms, first nights, special parties, whatever)
4. Her entire life is special occasions.
5. Her FiL pays for the workwear.
What's the problem?

vampirequeen Wed 27-Jun-12 13:38:09

The clothes are sold out to whom? These are not clothes that any ordinary person can afford. How many people can pay £1000+ for a dress?

She has stylists and dressers to help her choose her clothes and then they are made to her exact measurements. She should look good.

From my understanding of the history of any monarchy her job is to produce the next generation. Well they've been married over a year so there should be an a heir by now. If she's not doing that then she's not fulfilling her duty and I thought that's what it was all about. They have a superior duty to represent the nation and we have a deferential duty to pay for them.

Lilygran Wed 27-Jun-12 13:36:51

Yes, I'm sure they could but it isn't expected of most of us!
