Agree with comments about P aul McCartney-also fed up of over exposed David Beckham, if he's so fond of England-why does he live in LA. Couldn't be the money could it. Went to bed before the end-far too late for me.

Thought it was okay , probably better to have seen it live . We were also puzzled about "french" but thanks for explanation . Re McCartney I am afraid I toddled off to beddie , before he came on not that I am the least bit sorry I missed him, he should really accept his voice has gone . Fact is think that in the early days Lennon had stronger voice . What really does surprise though is how much the Americans still love them . Is it anything to do with Lennon and New York ??? We had an Olympic party. DS, DiL and 4 grandchildren came to my house to watch it. We had champagne.
The lighting of the cauldron was superb and involving the young athletes was inspired. The industrial revolution scene was powerful. The tribute to the NHS was timely. The whole thing was impressive but why does everyone keep wheeling out Paul McArtney? TBH I was always preferred John Lennon.

greatnan I know - it's always a case of the grass is greener. Managed to see a precis of the first part but still have to see the Industrial Rev bit. Am amidst a load of hard died Ozzies so trying to keep my lip shut with all the asides which, for me, is difficult! Still think the lighting of the flame was amazing - teary for the 2nd time!!

Gally- once you get home will be familysick - i.e. you will start missing them the moment you get on the plane home. I know I always do. Enjoy the rest of your stay.

Well done UK - another triumph - that'll give Mitt Romney something to mumble about . I managed to miss the first half of the Opening Ceremony - only woke up in time to see them filing in country by country; I am so mad, but it was 5 in the morning. Hopefully will find a recording of the whole thing somewhere so I can catch up. I agree number I had a shower while MrCartney was warbling - I can't stand him and even worse, can't bear to look at him. I think that the way they eventually did it was a very good idea. And IB found the opening ceremony unexpectedly fantastic, marred by just 2 things, Arctic Monkeys and Paul McArtney. The latter should have given up long ago!

I think it should be a child and Roger Bannister....maybe one born the day we got chosen to run the olympics.

I was 5 when the 4 minute mile was broken and remember it very clearly. We lived in Harrow and Roger Bannister lived not far from the outdoor swimming pool we used to go to, so it all felt very 'local'. Great to see that he's still in good health.
