How judgmental are you?

I was amazed at how difficult it was to find that information. The Internet Explorer help file was NBG at all. I had to do a Google search and found it on an obscure web advice site. ( www.mweb.co.za )

Heaven knows how I managed to do it previously.

I'm guessing that there are in fact very few gransnetters who are confident enough to post what might be seen as controversial views without thinking carefully beforehand about what they want to say. I have come across very little that I would call arrogant. Sometimes there is careless posting, or hasty posting, or impassioned posting (I plead guilty to them all and more), but very, very few actually set out to cause problems for others.

It's easy, also, I think, to view a strong argument (by which I mean logically strong, or rhetorically strong) as being dominant, especially when it conflicts with one's own view, but it need not be (and rarely is, in my view, from what I've seen on here) driven by a need to dominate so much, as a desire to have a bloody good discussion about something.

And so, in response to Alison's last post, I'm glad people support your challenges. That certainly isn't a problem as far as I'm concerned, and I don't regard it as cliquey. I don't think there are any cliques. Most people seem pretty pally to me.

pogs I found these instructions on how to stop Internet Explorer cutting you off if it thinks you have not done anything for a while (as when you are taking too long to compose a post) It is what I did to cure the problem. If the instructions make you dizzy, show them to your daughter, she might make more of them. I don't think I could say it any better than this - I might be able to do it for you if I were seated at your computer but describing it blind is difficult.

This is what it says:-

"Question - I keep getting disconnected from the Internet.

Answer -
Normally you can set a length of time that you would like your computer to remain idle before you are automatically disconnected from the Internet. Once the set length of time has elapsed and there has been no activity on your connection, Internet Explorer will automatically disconnect you from the Internet. If you don't want to be disconnected from the Internet automatically anymore, follow the steps below.

1) In Internet Explorer, select the Tools option in the top menu.
2) In Tools, select Internet Options.
3) An Internet Options window now opens.
4) In this window, select the Connections tab on top, and then select Settings.
5) Again, a new window appears. Select Advanced and see if the Disconnect if idle for xx Mins box is selected.
6) If it is selected, it means that if Internet Explorer sees no activity for the specified number of minutes, it will then disconnect you. De-select this option if you don’t want it to disconnect you automatically. "

Thank you, alison I think those who can do find it hard to understand those who cannot - if you imagine someone with no experience trying any activity that you are skilled and confident with, it is easy to assume that they are just not trying hard enough.

pogs You can't be using the internet at all without a browser - it is the program which connects to the internet for you when you go on ebay or gransnet. It is probably Internet Explorer, that is the most likely - its logo is a blue circle with an E on it. The next most likely is Mozilla Firefox, its logo is a blue sphere with a fox curled round it.

Been out all day so, although its a bit late, I think Elegran has understood how a lot of people feel.

Those of you who are so sure that it is easy for absolutely everyone to say what they like on GN must have a great deal of self confidence unless you are arrogant! Surely you have come across people who do not have your confidence? I reiterate that when I have challenged some of the more dominant posts I have received PMs from people who felt they did not have the courage to say what I said but they supported me all the way. This is no cliquey! This is simply people showing solidarity when they do not have the courage/confidence to say it themselves. Surely no one could have a problem with that?

I am going to the Midlands meet up and cannot see that it should be a problem for anyone. I would be very surprised if it changed the way I behave on GN

Browser? I only use my computer to look at E.Bay, keep in touch with my daughter and go on G.N. I am complete rubbish with computers anD G.N. was the first(and last) site I use and I have just about got my head around this site.

I will ask G.N. and my daughter can read what they say.

Well, thank you indeed for the comments, absent. I do agree that one learns a lot from some threads, and there are some I don't bother with too. But it isn't "timidity" that stops me posting sometimes, as I think I made clear.

I would reiterate my belief that there is no clique, just people who get on with one another or not or just a bit, as in most social groups. And if people want to meet, then why not? I hope I get to meet some of you, sometime!
