I've always thought, mistakenly probably, that I looked quite young. Ok I am now 64, have white hair and a certain amount of wrinkles, but I am very young in thought and deed and I don't dress in crimplene or wear pearls and a twin-set.... However, I got on a Sydney bus yesterday and the driver asked if I had a concession card. OMG shock; you could have blown me down with a feather. I thought ' yes, I am old(er) and obviously he saw me as 'old' and now I've got to face up to it'. Delusions of everlasting youth blew out of the window and over Sydney Harbour Bridge. When and how did the 'age' thing hit you?

I was really chuffed recently when a friend and I got on a crowded bus together and 2 people offered her a seat and not me. She is 6 weeks younger than me! Obviously I didn't say anything but felt good inside.

Did the new perm make you look like the Queen, rojon?

I know I now feel pathetically grateful if someone helps me with my suitcase getting on to or off a train. It does happen sometimes. smile

AlisonMA Fri 24-Aug-12 11:12:29

rojon no one has ever curtseyed to me, I don't know how I would reacct to that! It does sound sort of courteous.

I knew I was old when an African woman curtseyed to me during the greeting in church. Strangely she didn't do it before I had my hair permed! It was sort of nice though.

For the first time, I was recently asked in a cafe if I needed help with my tray!

PS Should say 'The old boy got on'. Poor old lady! hmm

As others see us ...
I went to meet my grandson from an after school club. A boy & girl were in the playground. The girl threw a ball fairly near me & the boy shouted, 'Watch out, you nearly hit that poor old lady!' Next day I told a friend who's 45. He said he'd hurried for a bus & a boy stood on the bus step to hold it for him. Inside the boy explained to his friend, I wanted to make sure got on.'

Jeni,
My maiden name was Bursnall and when a Student Nurse I was nicknamed Wurzel by a Staff Nurse and it stuck! I actually live in London - but born in N. Wales. Visitors to the Yorkshire Dales will know that my name is from there originally.( smile )

I was a grandmother at 42 and was told I looked about 30. Now nobody looks surprised to hear I am a great-grand-mother and I look awful in photos (mind you, I have never been photogenic).

Oh we had a wonderful ticket inspector on the train a few weeks ago. An elderly lady with wonderful white hair showed her ticket and senior railcard and the ticket inspector pretended to be outraged and accused her of borrowing somebody else's railcaard. At first she was indignant and quite upset and then the rest of realised that it was just his ittle jest when he said something along the lines of "Don't you know it's an offence to borrow your big sister's railcard when you are not old enough for one" Bless him! (He didn't say it to me though sad)

jeni Fri 17-Aug-12 21:34:40

goldengirl Fri 17-Aug-12 21:28:37

I always swore that I'd never end up sounding like my mother and of course the other day DD said 'You know what, mum? You sound just like Grandma!' The trouble is I look in the mirror and see my GREAT Grandma hmm

wurzel Fri 17-Aug-12 20:32:21

Soop : I worked for many years with v. old people and always remember that they feel young @inside'. In other words your spirit doesn't age. Reassuring when almost 70 mysel!!

AlisonMA Fri 17-Aug-12 11:48:10

Ella46 Fri 17-Aug-12 11:46:41

I can stand across the bedroom looking in the full length mirror, with no clothes on, and I look amazing!!

Then I put my specs on and dress hurriedly shock

AlisonMA Fri 17-Aug-12 11:37:05

Don't the little kind comments mean a lot? Who cares if the driver or whoever is just being flattering, it still makes your day.

I'm chuffed because this morning DH said I had a "nice bum whether clothed or not". Its bucked me up no end as I hurt all over from doing 3 classes at the gym during my spa day!

nanaej Thu 16-Aug-12 22:04:55

Just read all the posts on this thread and made me smile..I too have stopped looking at unexpected reflections in shop/train windows: too shocking! I look in the mirror and see my dad's face, look at my hands and they are mum's. Boobs belly & bum all heading south but in my head I am early 30's and my DGDs1 &2 often tell me 'Nana you are not old, not like Auntie Vera' Auntie Vera is my 87 year old aunt..it's all relative!

When we were so unceremoniously brought home on the back of a tow truck last week, the driver, 63, he told us, rang his wife and was saying what adjustments he was going to make to the step into his cab, to aid people of 60 plus, like him, to get into the cab. I said "very plus, I`m older than you", and he said "no way!" My hubby said "she`s nearly 70", and I said "I`m not, I`m only just 69!" and the truck driver said "well, me duck, you look good for 69". It was probably all flannel, but I loved him for it!!

Marelli Thu 16-Aug-12 21:44:59

merlotgran - horrid child! shockgrin

merlotgran Thu 16-Aug-12 19:50:32

I was about to take the stairs up to our library even though I was carrying a pile of books when I noticed the lift doors were open. A dear little brat girl shouted, ' Hold the door, mummy. We need to let that old lady in.' shock

Marelli Thu 16-Aug-12 19:42:50

winkgrin

Anagram Thu 16-Aug-12 19:41:17

Ah, so that's the reason for the exotic new name, then! grin

Marelli Thu 16-Aug-12 19:17:23

Well, today I got on the bus and handed the driver my pass, and he said "Since when did they start giving 30-year-olds bus passes, then?" I told him I was 23 and that he shouldn't be driving with eye-sight like that! I'm going to try and get the same bus tomorrow......he was quite a nice young man.....gringrin

1Rockingran Thu 16-Aug-12 19:14:24

I really have enjoyed reading all these comments on looking older and some have given me a good laugh. Mine was looking at my new passport photo!! Ugh!
Most of the time I forget my age (64) as they say you are only as old as you feel so I am 35!!!!
