Bonkers is good Alison! I wish I was as adventurous as Greatnan

Annobel it's been nice knowing you! Someone will be along to pick you out of the brambles on some mountain pass when we cotton on that we haven't heard from you since you flew off to see Greatnan grin

Annobel Sat 18-Aug-12 18:55:19

Don't she's threatening to take me on our-hour treks up hill and down dale! grin

jeni Sat 18-Aug-12 18:54:31

Ask Greatnans dd?

AlisonMA Sat 18-Aug-12 18:53:05

I don't understand, what's wrong with bonkers?

jeni Sat 18-Aug-12 18:42:23

I knew it! {it's the medical traing you know!}

whenim64 Sat 18-Aug-12 18:39:36

grin

Greatnan Sat 18-Aug-12 18:30:52

Tell tale!

whenim64 Sat 18-Aug-12 18:24:52

jeni grin

Having read Greatnan's tales of adventure, and sat opposite her at lunch whilst she describes her plans for more such forays into potential danger with a distinct glint in her eye, I also think she's probably half bonkers, half Indiana Jones! grin

Greatnan Sat 18-Aug-12 18:24:00

Funny you should say that, jeni - it is exactly the word my daughter used!
Juragran skis down really steep slopes but she has been doing it since she was a toddler.
Yes,I do agree that my daughter and I have reversed our roles. She is very competent and organised - I suppose she had to be, bringing up six children and having a demanding career. (Shush - don't tell anyone, but she can be a bit bossy! Can't think where she gets if from.)

AlisonMA Sat 18-Aug-12 17:44:15

Because children like the idea of becoming the parents!

jeni Sat 18-Aug-12 17:42:33

Well you're just bonkers!grin why do you think your dd is insisting you go to her?

Greatnan Sat 18-Aug-12 17:41:26

I will be 72 next month. I regularly take snorkeling holidays in tropical places, usually alone, although this year I had the pleasure of Juragran's company in Egypt. On my way back from visiting my family in NZ in January, I flew to Phucket to sample the snorkeling there, and took an elephant trek, at the suggestion of some members here. I went whale watching in NZ.
In Egypt, we had a jeep safari over the desert (very hot, dusty and uncomfortable, not recommended). We also took boat trips to see the coral off shore.
I walk nearly every day in very isolated places in the Alps and take little trips into Italy and Switzerland and other areas of France.
I will be having another go at cross-country skiing in Winter. I also roller skate.
I have discovered my adventurous side since I got divorced at the age of 39. Until then, we took every holiday in self-catering accommodation in Scotland, Wales or the West Country as my ex did not like flying. Six months after leaving him, I took a job in Monaco. Later, I started my own business and also worked in Brussels.
I revel in my freedom to have adventures although it does worry my daughter so much that she has decided I should move to NZ in a few years so she can 'keep an eye on me'. They have kayaks, and live a few miles from the lovely beaches of South Island and Abel Tasman National Park, so I will be having a go at that next Spring as well.
I think I have quoted this saying before - 'It is not getting old that stops you doing things, it is stopping doing things that makes you old'.

Grannyknot - have a wonderful, exciting holiday and show your family that there is a lot of mileage left in you!

grannyknot I bet you have the time of your life the nearest I ever got was canoeing in Wales when the DCs where young DH has always been an active outdoor sort of person and had us all doing watersports I am full of envy and hope you enjoy it.

ninathenana Sat 18-Aug-12 17:05:12

my brother's partner recently had her 63rd birthday. He bought her a driving experience in a lambo !! I'd do that in the blink of an eye.

She drives a morgan, so was well up for it, bro said he couldn't wait to see the 20 somethings face when he was giving her advice and instructions and she says "oh, you mean like this" and zooms off at 0-60 in xx secs grin

Unfortunately I'm not the right size for kyaking. If I got in one I'd be wearing it for life [grin grin]

Grannyknot Sat 18-Aug-12 16:38:54

Thanks for the encouragement ladies and grannylin LOL! I'm looking forward to it already. Will have a Google and will also be careful of hot sea water? I must hasten to add that husband can be bossy but he knows how far he can push me, anyway how can you resist it when someone says 'to me you'll always be 27?' smile

bikergran Sat 18-Aug-12 15:57:13

Goape grin did it last year with elder daughter..if you google it..smile

Grannylin Sat 18-Aug-12 15:49:14

Grannyknot been there, done it and I,m very jealous!Went a couple of years ago with my 2DDs on a sea kayaking holiday from the island of Lopud ,off Dubrovnik. The instructor was a blond, sun tanned god, a national water polo player and we had a fabulous time.( me and the DDs, not me and the sun god !)One word of warning.I came home with a strange rash on my backside from sitting in hot sea water for too long in the kayak! grinWe obviously have the same tastes- I am currently wearing a very nice wrap over dress from my favourite designers F&F

jeni Sat 18-Aug-12 15:12:54

You're a youngsterz,

AlisonMA Sat 18-Aug-12 15:01:42

Go GrannyKNot why on earth shouldn't you? You only live once and might as well make the most of it. Wish I was coming with you

Grannyknot Sat 18-Aug-12 14:58:46

We're off on holiday next week to Dubrovnik. And I am very excited especially as DH has blown the budget on an expensive hotel (we do also stay in hostels sometimes). Anyway once I got over the fright at the fact that my wardrobe is mostly Florence & Fred (I got over it really quickly cue online trip to the summer sales Boden etc) Then DH walked in and said I've booked us to go sea kayaking. Erm, I'm 63! I can't really swim other than doggy paddle! But instead of saying that out loud and 'I hope you enjoy it and I'm not going' - I started to think 'well, if the sea is like glass, and the instructor fit and handsome and skilled, and you can wear a life-jacket and feel the fear and do it anyway - it might be an adventure!' And I can think of worse places to meet my fate than in a kayak on the Adriatic Sea. So I'm up for it! Let's hope I don't bottle it on the day. grin.
