Oh I know Jess - I've told him that there's nothing to worry about (I've done the trip several times on my own), that I'll look after him! - that we'll book a lounge at both airports so he doesn't get stressed by the crowds, we will even upgrade to Premium Economy to give more space and comfort, but he just will not even consider these options. Just says that he can't (I say "won't) do it

Worth a try yoga - it does pass much more quickly and easily (unless in a v uncomfortable seat on Virgin grin )
Alterntively, tell him from me, 8 hours is for wimps. Try best part of 30. You get a different perspective.

That's very interesting Jess, my DH refuses to fly to see DGC, he says that it's not the fear of flying that stops him going but the whole process of the airport crowds, checking in, queuing, stuck in a "tin box" for 8 hours etc. I wonder if I can persuade him to see a hypnotherapist

My mother had her teeth out with just hypnosis! I had it to calm me down before my A levels - I was in a right old state. I think you have to believe in it to have it work properly. I didn't really and didn't do well!!!!

Back in the dim and distant days of 1976, my wife of the time wanted me to see a hypnotherapist, because I was an extremely heavy smoker -- on occasions I'd get through 60 in a day - Gauloises... In the end, I said if she set it up I'd go, mumble mumble...

The chap turned out to be a retired Army Lt Colonel. He got me relaxed, and talked... no 'trances', no swinging baubles - just a comfortable couch and talk. He suggested I stop producing the antidote that enables smokers to handle the poison that they are using, which was news to me. At the end he wanted £2 20p (Two guineas!) which he sent to a charity. Before I left he asked me if I had any cigarettes, and told me to chuck them in the bin. I have never touched one since!

It all depends on a tacit agreement between you.

It's very useful.

Yes - my OH was a GP and also trained and used it.

Yes I used to teach patients to locally anaesthetise a tooth, using self hypnosis.
I also used it for minor surgery, asthma, smoking and relaxation and ego boosting!

JessM Wed 22-Aug-12 18:07:55

Yes it did annobel but not the jet lag really... variable. Or maybe I have not been listening to my recording !

jeni, how interesting! I have 2 experiences, one that I had hypnotherapy for eczema years ago, and it worked. (Not a one-off session though)

Also many, many years ago I worked for a dentist who did hypnotherapy for some of his more nervous patients, and that seemed to work a treat.

Annobel Wed 22-Aug-12 18:04:09

JessM, that's an interesting use for hypnosis. Did it help to mitigate the effects of jet lag as well?

I was once had a bad experience with hypnotism and I'd be too scared to do it again. Although I think the person doing it was a bit inexperienced and tried something in a counselling session that she shouldn't really have done.

JessM Wed 22-Aug-12 17:23:10

No nonu helping time to pass quickly and easily when travelling for about 30 hours to see GKds

jeni Wed 22-Aug-12 17:22:01

I'm a trained hypnotherapist. Used to use it in general practice.

Nonu Wed 22-Aug-12 17:09:56

Did u use yours to give up smoking / jessm

JessM Wed 22-Aug-12 17:06:11

It can work if you find a good one. But it is hypnotherapist you need not a hypnotist!!! (stage stuff)
I would avoid the ones that just do smoking etc and try to find one that is a well qualified hypnotherapist.
I have tried one useless and very inexperienced one and one wonderful, well trained and experienced one.

Nonu Wed 22-Aug-12 17:02:46

A friend of mine was hypnotised to give up smoking 12 months ago and hasn"t had a cigarette since . Mind you you also have to have to desire to give up . If you decide to give it a go , Bonne Chance , smile

Annobel Wed 22-Aug-12 16:39:29

If you do, rosiemus, let me know how it goes. wink

rosiemus Wed 22-Aug-12 16:37:10

Has anyone ever tried this? I'd like to give it a go. I'd ask them to make me crave salad and hate chocolate.

If only...
