Silly sexist discriminations

Wasn't sure whether to put this under politics or chat, so plumped for "Other". DH and I have begun to put our names down to enter archery tournaments. DH asked our club leader whether there were any rules about dress that we needed to know, such as whether certain colours were preferred. Everyone who does archery knows not to wear anything too loose on the top half in case the bowstring gets caught – you don't want a bowstring that's travelling very fast and with a lot of poundage behind it to catch in your clothes.

Here are the answers: women cannot wear swimsuits (!!!) and men cannot wear sleeveless tops, but women can.

WHAT????

Why not just say no swimwear and no sleeveless tops?

I can feel a letter of complaint coming on. I know it's only trivial in actual fact, but it reflects an underlying discriminatory way of thinking, which is not trivial.

Do people have other examples of this kind of thing? It could be amusing as well as enlightening to make a collection.

Oh dear I have visions of all the men in speedos! shock

annodomini Mon 27-Aug-12 09:14:56

I know next to nothing about archery, Bags, but why would anyone think of wearing a swimsuit to do it? confused

nanaej Mon 27-Aug-12 09:52:22

Complain bags it is a clear example of ignorant sexism. If it is not safe to do archery without sleeves then women need to be kept as safe as men! wink

I am sure it has nothing to do with the men people who made the rules being happy to see women in vest type tops but preferring not to see the rippling muscles of the men!

OH dear I play golf and its riddled with sexist language and attitudes.

AlisonMA Mon 27-Aug-12 10:05:21

That would make me cross too! I'm glad I don't do anything which requires such rules.

Anagram Mon 27-Aug-12 11:00:30

I'm inclined to agree with nanaej - they don't want men in vests showing off their tanned, baby-oiled biceps!

jeni Mon 27-Aug-12 11:48:38

The landlord at our local put up a sign saying 'No topless men allowed'.
All the men seemed very happy about the implications!
When I joined thDHSS one very cold winter I wore a very smart trouser suit.
My then boss queried the suitability of this. I pointed out to him that I noticed our scots member was not wearing his kilt!

gracesmum Mon 27-Aug-12 12:24:57

grin maybe an unfortunate turn of phrase jeni? But thank you, it gave me a chuckle at the right moment!!!

jeni Mon 27-Aug-12 12:33:41

I'm glad!smile

How bizarre. Does that mean a man can wear a swimsuit? Will your husband be sporting a itzy witzy, teeny weeny, yellow polka dot bikini? smile

NfkDumpling Mon 27-Aug-12 14:22:50

Don't understand the reasoning behind swimsuits. Perhaps it was tried once and found dangerously distracting.
Could the objection to sleeveless men be due to over-hairy armpits?

jeni Mon 27-Aug-12 14:29:46

Visions of amazons!

baNANA Mon 27-Aug-12 15:05:05

At my husband's golf club they state if a shirt is collarless it has to have sleeves and if it is sleeveless it has to have a collar!

jeni Mon 27-Aug-12 15:12:29

confused

JessM Mon 27-Aug-12 15:43:59

men in swimsuits and long sleeved tops. doing archery. you are having us on , aren't you? grin

Bags Mon 27-Aug-12 15:52:50

The men are allowed to wear a short-sleeved top, but not a sleeveless one. Women are allowed to wear sleeveless tops.

As for why they've felt the need to pronounce about swimsuits at all, or the length of sleeves on people of different genders, I'm as baffled as anyone!

jeni Mon 27-Aug-12 15:57:07

It must be some strange Scottish tradition!

Bags Mon 27-Aug-12 16:00:57

UK rules, actually.

Bags Mon 27-Aug-12 16:05:10

No-one is allowed to camouflaged clothes (for obvious reasons; you might get shot by accident if you can't be seen to be standing in the way!)

The rules are here

Mishap Mon 27-Aug-12 17:06:03

These rules are a bit silly I must say.

Mind you the sight of men is vest tops is not one that thrills my heart!

jeni Mon 27-Aug-12 17:12:37

So, you have to be coordinated in your attire as well as hand eye!

Beach volleyball has an 'undress' code - you musn't wear more than the rules stipulate. According to the Daily Telegraph: In 1999 FIVB said that players must wear standardized uniforms, which for men meant wearing shorts (vests or t-shirts are optional) and women bikinis. So, if you turn out for U3A Beach Volleyball, no knitted costumes.smile I smile sunshine
