Thalidomide

Is there a time limit on being sued for compensation? Could that be the reason? Or are they just dragging it out until most victims have died?

Lots of thalidomide-affected adults are still around. Their original compensation was so measly because it was thought that they would all die nice and quickly. They did get a bit more (not much) later on but there probably is a time limit for any further compensation. It's too little and too late.

I don't think it's anything to do with time limits for compensation, the 'apology' was contained within a speech on the unveiling of a statue.

No one seems able to give a legitimate explanation of why, once the dire effects of pregnant women taking this drug became apparent, it wasn't withdrawn immediately. I'm not sure about Germany but it wasn't here which I think is why the Distillers Company was forced into paying compensation.

The time limit for medical negligence claims is three years from the date of the incident, or from the date when the claimant could 'reasonably' be expected to know that they had suffered damage. Once liability has been admitted, I think the clock stops running.

I have just listened to the 'apology' and it reminded me very much of the catholic church's 'apology'.
